    Wolves hold Newcastle

Wolverhampton Wanderers survived a Newcastle United onslaught in a bruising 1-1 Premier League draw at Molineux. More

    Time:90'
    • Wolverhampton Wanderers
    • Newcastle United
    • 90+6 Finally Attwell - who has frankly been poor - calls time on the match and a draw is the result.
    • 90+5 Ha! The irony. Barton is booked for a foul and needs to keep schtum lest he talk himself off.
    • 90+4 Ebanks-Blake on the left is put in by Fletcher but he is offside.
    • 90+3 Not sure how much added time is being played but we're deep into it as Wolves keep lumping it forward.
    • 90+2 The-kick is cleared and the loose ball drops to Guedioura but he shoots well wide.
    • 90+1 Perch is booked for a late challenge on Jarvis. Free-kick Wolves on the left...
    • 90' Newcastle on the counter, Jose Enrique gets it off Jonas, super cross AND NOLAN MUST SCORE BUT HE HEADS STRAIGHT AT HAHNEMANN!
    • 89' Ebanks-Blake puts in a cross but it spins away.
    • 88' Wolves' turn now to apply the pressure but Toon have everyone back.
    • 87' Amoebi into Foley from behind and correctly a booking.
    • 86' That foul(s) was on the edge of the Toon box so a clearance is the result of the free-kick.
    • 85' Henry is the luckiest man alive not to be off. He does a De Jong on Barton, then tries to stamp on Smith and rightly Toon are incensed. Yellow card. Yellow!
    • 84' A delay as the ref counts out the steps for the Wolves wall, 22 yards out but Barton's shot is blocked, it breaks to Routledge who shoots and it hits Ameobi, spins to Nolan and Williamson must score but the flag is up.
    • 83' Barton stands over it. Would be justice if he could win this...
    • 82' Berra enters the book for taking down Routledge on the edge of the box.
    • 81' OFF THE LINE! Barton swings the free-kick in, Ameobi flies in far post with a towering header across goal and Nolan thinks he is going to tap it in but sticks a boot out to hook it away at the death!
    • 80' TOON SUB: Ameobi on for Carroll.
    • 79' Guedioura clatters into Barton, rotten late tackle and a booking.
    • 78' Carroll again attacks a high ball but easy fro Hahnemann this time.
    • 77' Toon are really trying to put the squeeze on here but one thing Wolves are is organised.
    • 76' Clumsy from Ebanks-Blake on Barton, who may need another bout of therapy after this game.
    • 74' Barton smashes it wide after Jonas showed fleet feet to find Nolan, who slipped it wide to Barton.
    • 73' Nolan plays Carroll in but he was offside.
    • 72' WOLVES SUB: Fletcher on for Doyle.
    • 71' A bit of the sting has been taken out of this match. Head tennis for now.
    • 69' Smith shepherds the ball back to Harper. Toon have to win this now.
    • 67' Corner to Newcastle but Wolves clear and eventually win a free-kick just inside the Toon half.
    • 66' GREAT SAVE! Nolan thought he scored after Routledge and Perch combined on the right but Hahnemann somehow tips the finish away!
    • 65' A cross from Jonas on the left almost creeps in after looping towards the far post. Wide though.
    • 64' Nolan is booked for some verbals, I think.
    • 63' Carroll for England? Nah. Too raw. That's his fourth goal in three Premier League games. Hawey.
    • 62' Zubar is "why me-ing" after that cynical tackle. Barton swings in the free-kick from the left AND CARROLL! CARROLL! WHAT A HEADER! He rises above everyone and powers it in off the post from just inside the box!
    • 61' Great run by Jonas, cutting inside from the left and Zubar takes him out to earn a booking.
    • 60' Confirmation that Van Damme has some sort of injury, hence his replacement.
    • 59' Barton gets his own back with a foul on Foley.
    • 58' Routledge hares down the right and is in the box, he hits the byline and Ward slides in to play it off the winger and out for a goal kick.
    • 57' WOLVES SUB: Van Damme must have picked up a knock as he's been super - with Jonas largely silenced on the Toon left. Zubar is on in his place.
    • 56' Craddock lumps the ball clear after Nolan puts it in from the right. Newcastle pumping it into the Wolves box now as Berra heads over his own bar but was shoved by Carroll. Disgracefully Henry is asking the ref to show Carroll a second yellow for that, when he's lucky to be out there.
    • - Nagty - you asked why Tiote is not on the bench, well his registration has not been completed in time. He'll be there after the international break though.
    • 54' The break is on as Nolan bustles in on the right but his hanging cross is easily headed clear by Berra.
    • 53' Doyle chases it wide right and tries a cut-back to Ebanks-Blake but Toon clear.
    • 52' Cross from Routledge on the right but way too deep and Hahnemann watches it sail high and wide.
    • 50' All pretty quick and frantic as you'd expect. Not much time on the ball, or time to think, or thinking - period.
    • 49' Jarvis on a mazy dribble into the box and a superb sliding tackle from Perch. Corner. No! Goal-kick says the ref and Wolves cannot believe it. They initially called for a penalty but it was a clean tackle and clearly a corner.
    • 48' Barton is winded more than anything and needs some treatment. How has Henry not been booked yet?
    • 47' Nolan takes a throw quickly, inside to Jonas who loses the ball. Henry with another poor challenge on Barton, flying into him with a needless late barge, and surely he will be booked this time?
    • 46' The second half gets underway at Molineux and immediately it's an unnecessary clearance to touch under little pressure from Hahnemann.
    • - STATS: As I suspected, Wolves have set out to kick the Toon - mostly poor Joey Barton - with 12 fouls to the visitors' five.
    • - STATS: Both sides have had two shots on target, but Newcastle tellingly have had four off target after a couple of bad misses.
    • 45+5 Routledge on the run, he veers left and has Jonas in support as Newcastle manage to work it into the box, Nolan is closed off and Jonas can have a pop but he is blocked out and the whistle goes for half-time.
    • 45+4 Barton puts the free-kick in the box but his team-mates are all asleep as Wolves push up to catch them offside. Oops.
    • 45+3 Jarvis picks up the second booking of the day.
    • 45+2 A hopeful ball over the top sees Ebanks-Blake one-on-one with Williamson, who lacks his pace but pushes him wide enough such that the finish flies well over.
    • 45+1 All a bit frantic as high and low balls are played at pace with both sides scrapping in the middle.
    • 45' Wolves zip straight down the other end and win a corner, which Jones for once gets all wrong, swinging out of play at the far post.
    • 44' Carroll picks it up on the edge of the D and, from the left, cuts across before fizzing in a low shot with his right but well wide with Hahnemann watching it all the way.
    • 43' GOAL WOLVES! Lovely strike from Ebanks-Blake! Van Damme with a hanging cross from the right, Ebanks-Blake takes it down with a super first touch and rifles a low finish under Harper with his second. A touch of the Drogba about that. 1-0!
    • 43' Carroll protests, saying it took a touch for a corner, but it was clearly just a horror miss. He talks himself into the book.
    • 42' Brilliant skill from Nolan in the box, surrounded by players but spinning on a sixpence and sliding a lovely ball to Carroll but the young striker smashes it over from eight yards! How did he miss? Shocking!
    • 41' Van Damme, who is all over the pitch today, is caught offside.
    • 40' Routledge races down the right and lofts a super ball in for NOLAN WITH THE VOLLEY BUT HE SKIES IT! He set up the Mark Hughes but got just too much under the ball.
    • 39' A poor spell as the ball flies between the two keepers. 'Direct' I think is what you can call these teams.
    • 38' Harper lumps it long but this time Carroll does not win the header.
    • 37' Jonas is fouled by Van Damme, nasty rake down his Achilles but play on as Toon have advantage. Nothing materialises so the ref pulls it back. Yellow for the Belgian. Could have been red, IMO.
    • 36' Nolan tries a silly reverse pass just outside his own box, Jarvis races on to it and almost goes all the way but is closed down by three defenders and the ball spins into Harper's arms. Good spell for Wolves.
    • 35' Carroll is okay and Wolves have a throw on the right, though it comes to nothing.
    • 34' Another brilliant ball from Jones causes all kinds of problems, it skims off Coloccini’s head and Doyle gets it but he can’t shoot and Toon clear. Carroll is down hurt.
    • 33' Jones with the delivery in, near post again but low this time and Craddock back-heels it and the ball spins off Smith diving in and it could go anywhere but Barton hacks it out for a corner on the other side.
    • 32' After a couple of minutes of plugging and wiping, Harper is able to solider on as Wolves have a corner.
    • 31' Harper has a bloody nose after colliding with Smith, Doyle and Routledge at the near post for the corner. Ow. Looks kind of bad, they are stemming the flow but I'd say that could well be broken as the blood is coming out externally too.
    • 30' Jones swings it into the near post this time and Smith just about gets it behind under pressure from Van Damme and Doyle. Harper is hurt. Loving Jones's set-pieces.
    • 29' Van Damme is fouled around halfway and Wolves have a free-kick. Lumped upfield and Doyle wins a corner.
    • 27' Ebanks-Blake is still walking around with his hands on the back of his head. That was a huge chance.
    • 26' Everyone is up for this, including the bandaged head of Jody Craddock. Jones sends it far post AND OFF THE BAR FROM EBANKS-BLAKE! He was totally unmarked with a free header and was really unlucky. The angle was tight - he probably should have put it across goal instead of trying to sneak it inside Harper - but a great bending ball from Jones, who has a left-foot made of honey.
    • 25' Ebanks-Blake could be in but his shot from the edge of the box is batted behind by Harper for a corner.
    • 24' Nolan is offside as he raced on to a through ball.
    • 23' First card of the game but, oddly, not for Henry. Doyle gets it for a sly push in midfield while spinning off his man to chase a long ball. Really harsh.
    • 22' Barton clips it in but barely cleared by Wolves, another cross in from Jonas this time but too long. Still with Toon who are bombarding the Wolves box but they eventually clear.
    • 21' Henry again fouls Barton, who claims persecution. Free-kick Toon around 35 yards out, to be fair Henry went for the ball but tangled with Barton.
    • 20' Cross from Routledge on the right, super chest down from Carroll but Berra gets a toe on it just in time to clear.
    • 19' Jonas on a mazy dribble again but his cross is cleared. Carroll at the centre of everything.
    • 18' Another great chance for Newcastle, an immense flick-on from Carroll, totally out-leaping Van Damme, and it comes off the sprawling Craddock to Nolan one-on-one but he doesn’t expect it and can only toe-poke it against Hahnemann. The ball rebounds to Nolan but, under pressure, he can’t finish and fouls the keeper as he grabs hold of it.
    • 17' Carroll attacks another cross from the right but Craddock does enough to put him off and Hahnemann claims. Craddock needs a bit of treatment to a knock on the head.
    • 16' Good ball again from Jonas that spins behind the diving Carroll but skips away from Routledge, who gives away a free-kick in his enthusiasm to win it back.
    • 15' Ebanks-Blake fouls Barton in midfield and appears to be accusing the Newcastle player of making a meal of being kicked on the knee. Barton keeps his cool and points to the ref, hinting that he is only a yard away and saw the kick.
    • 13' Carroll attacks a Jonas cross that is close to Hahnemann and the two collide. Predictably the Wolves players kick off and there's a rumble but he was entitled to go for that and, sensiibly the ref agrees, explaining to Hahnemann and co that they should man up.
    • 12' The ref belatedly blows for a push by Carroll on Van Damme. Newcastle have had the better of this opening.
    • 11' Super flick on by Carroll that Routlege gets on to, he cuts it back and Berra should clear but Nolan flies in to rob him and seems to play it off Ward but the ref points for a goal kick. Nolan is incredulous.
    • 10' Doyle goes down on the edge of the box but he is waved up by the ref and Toon players. He then clatters into Smith and is annoyed at being called for it.
    • 9' SHOULD HAVE BEEN 1-0! Great run down the left by Routledge, who clips in a super low ball that Barton hurls himself at but just behind him and too wide of Nolan far post.
    • 8' Craddock is all over Carroll, Newcastle have a free-kick just inside the Wolves half. Poor delivery from Barton though, straight to the keeper.
    • 7' Good stuff from Wolves but a ball into the area releasing Ebanks-Blake catches the striker offside. Now Toon attack but Hahnemann is able to gather a poor cross from the right.
    • 6' Nolan does really well to hold it up for Routledge, super dipping cross and Carroll rises above Craddock but he cannot get enough power on the header and, while on target, Hahnemann is able to claim.
    • 5' Nolan can get a hold of it on the edge of the D but he is adjudged to have gone in too aggressive on Berra.
    • 4' Super ball wide left to Jonas from Carroll, he slips it wider still to Enrique but his cross is cleared.
    • 3' Newcastle keeper Steve Harper takes the free-kick long. Wolves clear upfield but the flag is up for offside.
    • 2' OOOF! Crunching tackle between two of the hard men of the Premier League as Barton cops one from Henry. A foul but nothing more, to be fair Barton went in a touch high too but the ref would only have seen Henry's lunge.
    • 1' The first half gets underway as Carroll chases a long one into the left channel.
    • 14:58 The teams are out in what is, for now, a top-half clash in the Black Country.
    • 14:55 Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton wants to emulate Wolves by staying in the Premier League and building the following season. "They're a great example, as are Birmingham City, of a team who have come up and developed and added to the squad. They're striving to be stable Premier League teams."
    • 14:50 Kevin Foley insists Wolves will not be overawed by Newcastle after their six-goal hammering of Aston Villa: "Of course you notice a result like the 6-0. I remember last season Tottenham beat Wigan 9-1 at home and we went there for their next home match and ended up winning 1-0." More from him here!
    • 14:45 For Wolves there is just change from the 1-1 draw at Everton, Van Damme in for Elokobi with Ward dropping to left-back is seems.
    • 14:40 Unsurprisingly there is no change to the Newcastle side from the 6-0 win over Aston Villa. Ryan Taylor stays on the bench despite his Carling Cup special in midweek.
    • 14:35 TEAMS - Wolves team: Hahnemann, Foley, Craddock, Berra, Ward, Jarvis, Henry, David Jones, Van Damme, Ebanks-Blake, Doyle; Subs: Hennessey, Edwards, Stearman, Fletcher, Mancienne, Zubar, Guedioura /// Newcastle team: Harper, Perch, Williamson, Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Routledge, Smith, Barton, Gutierrez, Nolan, Carroll; Subs: Krul, Lovenkrands, Ryan Taylor, Ameobi, Kadar, Vuckic, Ranger
    • 14:30 TOON FACTS: Despite shipping three goals against Manchester United, Newcastle have allowed their opponents the joint-fewest shots on target in the Premier League so far (4). The last six times a team hit at least six goals in a Premier League match they have won their next game. Andy Carroll has scored five goals in his last five league appearances.
    • 14:25 WOLVES FACTS: Wolves have won four of their last five matches at home to United in all competitions, and they have lost just one of their last seven league games.
    • 14:20 Match odds: Wolves 13/10, Draw 21/10, Newcastle 9/5
