    • 90+3' There goes the final whistle! A 3-1 win for Aston Villa. A job well done by the visiting side. Weimann departs to be replaced by N'Zogbia. The whistle sounds seconds later.
    • 90+1' Suarez is booked for complaining about a decison that fails to go for Liverpool. Can't blame the referee for that. He called that right. Suarez has been complaining for large swathes of the afternoon. We are into three minutes of time added on.
    • 89' Johnson and Benteke suddenly facing up to each other. Benteke booked. Looked a bit harsh that decision.
    • 88' GOAL! Gerrard deflects Johnson's shot into the Villa net. And the home side have one goal back here. They trail 3-1 now.

    • 85' Cole tries to flick the ball at the Villa goal, but ends up nudging it well wide of the target.
    • 84' Liverpool with 23 shots at goal, but nothing to show for it. The Liverpool fans begin to head for the exit doors. Hardly a surprise.
    • 83' Downing picks out Agger in the Villa box. Can't connect properly with the ball as he turns and lifts the effort well wide of the target.
    • 82' Bannan drives a shot at the Liverpool goal, but comes off Weimann before dropping wide. Villa not abandoned hope of finding a fourth here today.
    • 81' A ball from the back heads straight down the middle of the park and ends up safely in the arms of Guzan.
    • 80' Cole sees a forlorn cross head straight out of play for a goalkick to the visiting side.
    • 79' Villa dropping deep and closing down space. Very difficult to see Liverpool finding one goal here never mind three.
    • 78' Villa coming off the back off a 4-1 win at Norwich in the League Cup last eight. This one completes a great week for Lambert's side.
    • 77' Suarez's free-kick deflects into the heart of the Villa box. Could have broken to a red shirt. But doesn't. More frustration for Liverpool is the story of this match.
    • 76' Delph deemed to be late on Sterling and Liverpool have a free-kick 25 yards from the Villa goal.
    • 75' Villa standing tall to see out the cross by Downing before doing likewise seconds later. Villa just refusing to buckle.
    • 74' Villa have won just one of their last 10 at Anfield. This is going to be two in 11 unless Lambert's side stage a massive collapse.

    • 67' Agger sees a long-range effort brilliantly held by Guzan. This Villa defence has held up superbly well today, it must be said.
    • 66' Suarez drives a free-kick into the Liverpool area. Ball bounces around the Villa box, but the visiting players frantically hack the loose ball clear.
    • 65' Appeals for a handball as Herd seemed to block a Johnson header, but the referee doesn't want to know. No Liverpool penalty.
    • 64' Bannan provides the pass, but Weimann loses the ball in the middle of the park. Gerrard earns Liverpool a corner.
    • 63' Liverpool with over 70 percent of possession in the last five minutes. But can't turn that dominance into goals. Which is the most worrying aspect of their play.
    • 62' Herd makes another timely tackle to deny Suarez space before Skrtel heads well over the bar. Liverpool fans look resigned to defeat, but a goal might change all that.
    • 61' Cole thumps a volley wide from distance. Meanwhile, Suarez is complaining to the referee about something or other.
    • 60' Liverpool’s biggest ever Premier League home defeat was by three goals – 4-1 against Chelsea in October 2005.
    • 59' Gerrard tries to latch onto the ball from Suarez. It breaks kindly for Guzan to gather the cross.
    • 58' Benteke scored his first ever Premier League double. If he scores again he will be the third Premier League away player to score a hat trick at Anfield after Peter Ndlouv for Coventry City (1995) and Andrey Arshavin for Arsenal (2009).
    • 57' Guzan and Suarez collide going for a high ball. The Villa keeper unhappy with the attention he is receiving from the Liverpool forward.
    • 56' Bannan drags a shot at goal from distance. Lacked the required power as Reina makes the stop. More quick play by Villa.
    • 55' Brendan Rodgers well wrapped up on the touchline in his scarf, but feeling the heat here today.
    • 54' Another superb break by Aston Villa sees Reina dive to halt an Andreas Weimann effort from distance.
    • 53' Joe Cole has replaced Shelvey for Liverpool. Not that it is going to make much difference by the looks of things.
    • 52' Villa heading for only a second away in the Premier League. Their fans loving this afternoon.
    • 51' Not sure what that Liverpool rearguard was doing there. All too easy. Rodgers looking utterly bamboozled by what has gone on here.
    • 50' GOAL! Christian Benteke nets the third goal for Villa. Strolls through the middle of the home defence. Easy finish and the visitors lead 3-0.
    • 49' Downing slips the shot at goal from Suarez's pass. But no real power on the shot. Easy save for Guzan. Story of the afternoon really.

    • 46' We are off and running in this second period.

    • 44' We are into one minute of time added on in the first period as Allen can't gather the loose ball in the Villa box.
    • 43' Andreas Weimann scored his third Premier League goal of the season – all have come against traditional 'big four' clubs. He also scored twice against Manchester United.
    • 42' Suarez and Sterling trying to get on the end of that Shelvey free-kick, but the move comes to a familiar end with Guzan diving to grasp the loose ball.
    • 41' Eric Lichaj bundles Sterling to the ground and Liverpool have a free-kick out wide.
    • 40' Chance for Shelvey in a packed Villa box, but Guzan does enough to get a firm punch on the ball.
    • 39' Johnson picks out Shelvey in the middle, but he can't connect properly with the finish as Guzan saves. More frustration for Liverpool.
    • 38' Liverpool look on in disbelief. Were all over Villa like a rash early on, but somehow trail by two goals.
    • 37' GOAL! Andreas Weimann has added a second goal for Villa. Brilliant one-two with Benteke and he slams the ball under Reina in the Liverpool goal. A 2-0 lead for Villa.
    • 36' Baker through Sterling with a late challenge. Wasn't hanging about with that one. Sterling felt the full force of that tackle.
    • 35' Johnson takes up a decent position out wide, but ends up sending a cross far too deep as the ball bounces out of play.
    • 34' An offside flag is raised against Shelvey and that will suit Villa all day long.
    • 33' Andreas Weimann and Holman almost in again on the break for Villa with Benteke free in the middle. Liverpool none too clever in defending these counter attacks.
    • 32' Andreas Weimann with a glorious chance to add the second from Benteke's header on, but he lifts the ball over the bar with Reina stranded.
    • 31' Small posse of visiting fans aren't complaining about taking the lead. Gerrard sends Suarez in, but he thumps the ball into the side netting.
    • 30' Christian Benteke scored his fourth Premier League goal for Aston Villa, and first away from home.
    • 29' The home fans look stunned by that moment. At least Liverpool have one hour to try to salvage this situation.
    • 28' Liverpool dominating possession and pressure, but have nothing to show for it. And Villa have the lead with their first real attack of the game.
    • 27' GOAL! Christian Benteke slams the ball into the home net from 22 yards out. Shot hit the back of the net via the post. Villa grab a shock lead.
    • 26' Lucas forced to dash back to win the ball as Villa had three against two men for a minute there.
    • 25' Suarez deemed to be offside as a shot is saved by Guzan. Downing continues to cut an impressive figure for the home side.
    • 24' How Villa remain at 0-0 in this match is something of a minor miracle. Liverpool continue to keep the ball. The home side camped out in the Villa half.
    • 23' Superb tackle by Herd to win the ball from Suarez as he bounded through on goal.
    • 22' Brendan Rodgers and Paul Lambert perched on the side of their respective technical areas. Both men looking concerned for different reasons.
    • 21' Villa trying to keep the ball, but Liverpool pushing for this opening goal with some intent. The visiting side can't get out of their own half.
    • 20' Liverpool and Villa fans stand to applaud the Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov, who is recovering from leukemia.
    • 19' Superb tackle by Baker to win the ball from Shelvey as he prepared to pull the trigger. Liverpool going nearer and near here to a goal.
    • 18' Bannan keeping a close eye on Sterling, whose cross is gathered into his body by Guzan.
    • 17' A delightful ball by Suarez to pick out Gerrard on the run. The Liverpool captain can't control the ball at pace and Villa survive another attack.
    • 16' Andreas Weimann goes beyond Reina, but the Liverpool goalkeeper does well to stay on his feet before tackling the Villa player. Fine piece of goalkeeping.
    • 15' Sterling sees a cross deflect off a Villa shirt as the visiting side try to get themselves up the park.
    • 14' Baker comes across to win the ball from Sterling with Liverpool continuing this attacking assault.
    • 13' Suarez caught by Clark late in the air. A Lucas pass lacks the quality seconds later as it runs through to Guzan.
    • 12' Guzan off his line to collect the ball from Johnson's cross. Liverpool utterly dominant so far in this contest.
    • 11' Johnson sees a cross blocked as he tries to pick out Suarez. Agger heads wide from a Gerrard corner that was deemed to have gone out of play before it found the defender's head.
    • 10' Aston Villa have won only two Prermier League away matches in 2012. Only promoted or relegated clubs have won fewer away matches in this calendar year.
    • 9' Allen is the latest man to have a pop at goal from distance after some more keen attacking play by Johnson. Wide of goal. But this has been a bright start by Liverpool.
    • 8' Downing decides to uncork an effort from 30 yards out. Plenty of venom with his right foot, but the shot is always sailing wide of goal.
    • 7' Another decent ball by Johnson trying to find Suarez, but he overhits that effort as Guzan is off his line to collect with some ease.
    • 6' Poor pass by Suarez trying to pick out Gerrard. But the ball breaks back to Gerrard, whose shot is saved by Guzan.
    • 5' Eric Lichaj nearly knocks the ball into his own net from Dowining's drilled cross. Guzan doing well to react and make the save.
    • 4' Gerrard fails to pick out Sterling, but fails. Poor stuff from him really. Lovely touch by Suarez. The sort of skill one has come to expect from the Uruguay forward.
    • 3' Gerrard with a free-kick at the other other end of the park for Liverpool, but he knocks that straight out of play.
    • 2' Bannan throws a free-kick into the heart of the Liverpool box, but Christian Benteke's header is well blocked by Pepe Reina. Quick start to this match.
    • 1' We are off and running then in this one at Anfield.
    • 14:59 A rousing minute's applause for Phil Taylor, the manager of Liverpool before the legendary Bill Shankley.
    • 14:55 Out come the teams at Anfield. You'll Never Walk Alone will greet them as ever.
    • 14:50 Villa are expected to line up with three at the back - Clark, Baker and Herd - as Lowton and Lichaj operate as wing-backs. Liverpool line up with Shelvey playing off Suarez and Lucas and Allen holding. Gerrard and Sterling should provide the width.
    • 14:45 Villa's 4-1 thumping of Norwich was welcome indeed for Paul Lambert - especially as it came against his former club. Villa are now unbeaten in five in all competitions though they have only scored six goals in that time. Creating chances is their primary problem.
    • 14:40 Liverpool start the day in 10th place but a win could put them up into seventh, ahead of Arsenal who play Reading on Monday. Aston Villa are down in 17th, and only goal difference has them above Wigan and out of the relegation zone. A victory could put them 14th though.
    • 14:35 So Downing might have a point to prove against his former side, and indeed his own manager. He has admitted in today's matchday programme that he has been told he can leave the club in January. Football - Downing to assess options in January
    • 14:30 Liverpool bring in Stewart Downing at left-back against his former side as Jose Enrique is out injured. Meanwhile, Aston Villa make four changes following their Capital One Cup win at Norwich. Andreas Weimann comes in for the injured Darren Bent, while Brad Guzan, Ashley Westwood and Barry Bannan also come back in.

  1. On paper Liverpool should win this what with the quality ion their line-up. Yet Liverpool, this season have looked at times like they are flying then they come back down to earth with the kind of result they had at Southampton and West Brom before that. Progress is like that sometimes. Also Villa won at Anfield and are fighting for the PL lives. However, if Liverpool give it 110% they should prevail otherwise a draw or defeat is a more likely result. 3-1 Liverpool my prediction.

  4. A work colleague remarked that if we carry on churning out **** results like this, our star players - Gerrard, Suarez - will soon get itchy feet. I think he's right. WE DESPERATELY NEED TO TURN THIS INDIFFERENT SPELL AROUND.

    From Dave59, on Wed 19 Dec 10:43
  5. I was shocked by this result especially when you look at the team sheets and Liverpools quality players. It would be interesting to know where the Reds would be right now in the table if Kenny wasn't given the premature sack? But Rogers needs time to work with the team and complete his work which like anything wont be without the occasional setback. I did though feel some of his pre match comments could have been more positive and believing when he said that it would be a close match and praised the Villa manager and his team. Perhaps Brendan should have praised the Villa manager but concluded something like, 'However I am confident about my teams quality and the advantage we have playing at home at Anfield.' I just worried that Rogers didn't do enough in the pre match build up to give his team the best vision and belief going into the match.

From Mark Bell, on Tue 18 Dec 4:13
  6. When rodgers used that envelope trick, i am sure the envelopes all had his name in them because he has let us down with all th erubbish players he has bought none have done anything positive for us. playing downing at left back, keeping suso and wisdom on the bench, we need quality players in to improve the squad but Brendo is looking at average players in january, sturridge and Ince , cmon sturridge can't get into Chelsea squad and ince would be another borini moment, our scouts are no good either if these are players we are getting. Brendon said we would fall in love with Allen & Borini, i can't see that happening. We where around eighth position with Kenny last season, Allen was supposed to be like a spanish type player i cannot see where Brendo saw that comparison. I have lost faith in him already. i would rather we played like Villa and get the 3pts than dominating play and come away with nothing. we need quality players not average let sturridge stay at Chelsea and find someone like Ba, Michu or Benteke. Rodgers if you can't then you r not what we need if you cannot bring in quality let us find someone who can without making excuses every week.

  8. Hmmm. That Roy Evans. Only second or third in the league. Let's humiliate him by having him make the tea for the frenchman. that should bring back the glory days. Let's spend some more money on players that the next manager doesn't want. And now the only man from Valencia who doesn't know how to smile. let's give him even more money. After all "he won the euro cup" [didn't stevie g play a small part?] Oh dear, now we are lower down the table than we were with roy evans. tell you what - we'll go backwards and spend 35m on a player and then not give him the service that his particular talents require. Better get shot of him then and play with one striker and hope he doesn't get injured or suspended. That man knows his onions - we'll give him to WBA. What on earth are they doing? Maybe they should put Paul Merton in charge. He has a good brain and a sense of humour - couldn't do worse. How about some primary school kids to liven up the directors' meetings. I despaIr. Robbie said he would jog back from singapore to be in the squad. How many of the current squad feel like that? Stevie and Jamie and the tea lady - don't know any more.

  12. We are so negative in midfield with Joe allen the main culprit. We have no cutting edge and will always have no chance against a team like Villa who were well prepped for the game. They have a power house striker and a young, fast and positive midfield. Why are we continually playing this system WHICH is not proven, it only proves at the moment that it DOESN'T work, yes we dominate possession regular but what do we gain from it. I still hope Brendan will turn us around, but at the moment is he a clever manager who needs another midfielder and a striker to put us right or is he just a power mad clown who really believes what hes doing is right whilst all the stats say he actually is not right. By the way Brendan get rid of Allen, he would not have got in Swansea's team this season- FACT.
