    • - Don't forget you can watch highlights of this match, along with every Premier League game, from 00:01 on Monday morning (UK only).
    • 90+5' FULL TIME. Reading secure a first away win of the season thanks to Le Fondre's stunning impact as a sub. Boos for Newcastle though, who remain firmly in trouble.
    • 90+4' Kebe and Coloccini both go into the book after a bit of handbags. Things almost boiled over.
    • 90+3' The ball bounces out to Obertan but he doesn't connect cleanly with his volley and Federici grabs the ball with ease.
    • 90+2' Superb tackle from McAnuff to stop Jonas from getting a cross into the box. Still Newcastle press forward.
    • 90' We will have four minutes of added time, and Newcastle don't look like breaking through.
    • 89' Ameobi can't get a header on target as Newcastle continue to pile pressure on Reading, but to no avail.
    • 87' Huge chance for Cisse! Perch heads a free-kick to the Senegal striker and though he controls the ball delicately with his first touch, his finish is horrendous as he blasts the ball high over the bar on the turn.
    • 86' Excellent goalkeeping from Federici again as he clears under pressure.
    • 84' Williamson, already on a booking, pushes Pogrebnyak to the ground. It was weak from the Russian though and no second yellow.
    • 82' Stat from Infostrada: "Adam Le Fondre scored his seventh and eighth PL goals of the season and first two away from home."
    • 80' Newcastle make their final change as Gabriel Obertan comes on for Vurnon Anita. Pardew with a roll of the dice.
    • 79' Debuchy into the book as things get worse for Newcastle.
    • 78' What a shocker for Newcastle. They were so dominant in the first half but have fallen apart now.
    • 77' GOAL! Newcastle 1-2 Reading! Le Fondre again! Incredible! Kebe heads down a cross at the back post and after Akpan produces an air shot, Le Fondre buries his shot inside the post. Brilliant finish.
    • 75' More replays of the goal appear to show the ball striking Le Fondre's chest but also catching an arm.
    • 74' Cabaye is taken off for Bigirimana and the Newcastle fans are furious! Cabaye surely isn't fit for 90 minutes though so Pardew has hardly dropped a massive clanger.
    • 73' Cabaye goes close! Ameobi gets his head to a high ball and the ball drops to the Frenchman who, with his back to goal, spins to fire an acrobatic volley wide of the post.
    • 72' Le Fondre was sliding in and horizontal when the ball struck him. Definitely a hint of handball. It probably wasn't deliberate but Newcastle may feel hard done by when they see the replay.
    • 71' GOAL! Newcastle 1-1 Reading! Le Fondre with his first touch after coming on as a substitute! Leigertwood picked out Kebe with a gorgeous pass to the right channel and the winger's cross is low and delicious. Williamson slides in to try and intervene but the ball strikes Le Fondre, possibly on the arm, and goes in.
    • 70' Guthrie is replaced by Adam Le Fondre for Reading as they make an attacking tweak.
    • 69' Newcastle want a handball when Kebe controls the ball it was his chest. Krul manages to wrestle control of the ball in any case.
    • 68' Stat from Opta: "Pavel Pogrebnyak has scored in his last three Premier League outings for Reading."
    • 67' Now it is Kelly's turn to go into the book as he clatters into Jonas in the air. That was dangerous.
    • 66' In a flurry of action, Guthrie slides in late on Cabaye near the touchline to earn a booking.
    • 65' Newcastle respond with a change of their own as James Perch comes on for Marveaux.
    • 64' A change for Reading as Hope Akpan - signed from Crawley - replaces McCleary for his debut.
    • 63' Chance for Reading! Kebe heads the ball back down to Pogrebnyak and the striker, unmarked 10 yards out, unleashes a fierce effort on the half-volley, catching it completely wrong as the ball soars into the stands. Rubbish.
    • 61' Marveaux tries to pick out Cisse with a straight ball into the box but Reading head away.
    • 60' Stat from Infostrada: "Reading have won none of their eight Premier League games against teams in the bottom nine of the current table (W0 D4 L4)."
    • 59' The Argentina international is up and running though. No harm done.
    • 58' Ouch. Jonas collapses to ground in pain after a clash in the centre of the pitch. Kelly appeared to catch his outstretched leg, though both men were going for the ball.
    • 57' Guthrie, against his former side today of course, takes the free-kick but hammers his effort over the bar. He went for power where Cabaye went for subtlety
    • 56' Williamson goes into the book for persistent fouling, the latest of which sees him trip Kebe from behind. Messy more than anything else.
    • 56' Cisse crosses for Cabaye and the midfielder loses Mariappa with a gorgeous first touch, only to steer a weak shot wide of the far post.
    • 55' Important intervention from Harte at the back post as he heads away with Ameobi lurking to try and get his head to Santon's deep delivery.
    • 54' Stat from Opta: "Newcastle are unbeaten against the bottom four teams in the current table (W2 D2 L0)."
    • 53' Kelly lumps the ball into the box for the Pog but with Williamson at his back he can't do much more than loop the ball up into the air with his head.
    • 52' Woeful from Ameobi. He has time and space outside the box but instead of playing in Santon to the left in space, he tries to bend the ball into the top corner. It sails high into the stands.
    • 51' Nice break from Newcastle but when the cross comes in from Cisse from the right, Mariappa gets a vital touch to take it away from Marveaux.
    • 50' Coloccini tries to embark on a driving run from the back - he must have learned that watching Sol Campbell v Argentina in 1998.
    • 48' Krul does well to punch away from a high cross and when the ball lands at the feet of McCleary he dribbles a weak shot wide.
    • 47' Cabaye gives away an early-free kick and Ian Harte's dangerous delivery is deflected just wide by the thigh on Jonas. That almost snuck in at the far post.
    • 46' KICK OFF!
    • 45+1' HALF TIME. Cabaye's stunning free-kick on his first start following a lengthy injury has Newcastle ahead at the break.
    • 45' We will have one added minute.
    • 43' Stat from Infostrada: "Yohan Cabaye scored his third PL goal of the season and first at St James Park since April 2012."
    • 41' Lovely stuff from Ameobi as he cuts in from the right and produces a fine cushioned touch to lose his man. However, his attempted shot is terrible and he ends up on his bum.
    • 40' Kebe tries to lose Coloccini but produces a heavy touch and can't stop the ball from running out of play.
    • 39' A deflection from Kelly from the right makes the ball spin up into the air but into the arms of Tim Krul. Newcastle's keeper has had a very easy afternoon so far.
    • 37' Cabaye made that free-kick look incredibly easy - but it required near-perfect technique.
    • 36' GOAL! Newcastle 1-0 Reading! Gorgeous free-kick from the Frenchman as he curls a beautiful effort over the wall and well out of the reach of Federici. He deserves it.
    • 35' There's pushing and shoving in the wall so the ref goes to calm things down...
    • 34' Marveaux embarks on another superb driving run through the centre of the pitch and is brought to ground 20 yards from goal by Mariappa. Free-kick's in a good position...
    • 32' Stat from Opta: "Reading have allowed 128 shots on target against them in this season’s Premier League, the most in the division."
    • 30' What a save! Debuchy looks to be offside when breaking clear down the right but he is allowed to take the ball on and cross for Cisse. The striker meets it with a firm first-time finish 10 yards from goal but Federici spreads his wings to block. Fantastic.
    • 29' The Newcastle onslaught continues as Cabaye tries to get a shot away on the edge of the box, only to swing and miss the ball. A poor effort. Now Reading clear but McCleary is wrongly ruled to be offside.
    • 28' Cisse goes close! A Cabaye free-kick is headed out and then back into Cisse, who spins and hits a fantastic volley that unfortunately goes straight at Federici.
    • 27' Reading break quickly through McCleary on the left wing and his low cross finds Pogrebnyak, but the sliding finish from the big striker sends the ball wide of the far post. He should have hit the target really.
    • 26' Ameobi heads a cross into the path of Cisse and he tries to get a first-time shot away, only for Leigertwood to block superbly.
    • 25' Cabaye swings the ball in and Guthrie is alert to head away against his former side.
    • 24' Leigertwood muscles Amoebi to ground and is furious when being penalised 30 yards from goal. Cabaye to deliver...
    • 23' Stat from Opta: "21 points after 22 games of a campaign is Newcastle’s lowest ever tally in the Premier League era."
    • 22' New signing Debuchy obviously wants to make a big impression but his shot from all of 40 yards is awful as it drifts wide.
    • 21' Reading need to get foot on ball more. They are struggling to put together any sort of passing move at the moment.
    • 19' The snow is starting to drift down again at St James' Park. They have painted the lines blue just in case the snowfall does get out of hand, but there's nothing more than a light sprinkling at present.
    • 17' Newcastle are now well on top and but for some excellent goalkeeping from Federici would be leading at home.
    • 16' Oh what a save! Cabaye chips a pass through the centre of the Reading defence and Cisse leaps to get his head to the ball. It is destined to nestle inside the post but Federici flings out his left arm to make a brilliant reflex stop.
    • 15' Newcastle go close! Cabaye finds space to the right of the box and drills in a firm shot from a tight angle. Federici is equal to it and blocks the effort with his chest.
    • 14' More pressure from Newcastle as Cabaye takes aim from the edge of the box and though his shot skids in front of Federici the keeper clasps it easily.
    • 13' Now Newcastle bomb forward but Cisse is clearly offside when Ameobi tries to feed him in the centre of the box.
    • 12' Marveaux has a shot blocked from 20 yards before Reading quickly break and find Kebe on the right wing. He cuts inside when reaching the box but his pass is cut out by the Newcastle defence.
    • 11' Jimmy Kebe forced into some defensive work for Reading as he halts a run from Santon down the left. The Italian pushes forward again but his low effort is cleared.
    • 10' Reading are hardly getting a sniff of the ball here so far - it's been a very accomplished performance from Newcastle.
    • 9' Marveaux dinks a pass into the box for Cisse but Adrian Mariappa spots the danger and gets his head to the ball to loop it back into the hands of Adam Federici.
    • 8' Stat from Opta: "Reading have lost all seven away matches against Newcastle in all competitions, conceding at least three goals in each of their last six visits."
    • 7' Newcastle look very confident in possession but a nice flowing move ends disappointingly when Davide Santon fires a pass out of the reach of Jonas Gutierrez and out for a throw.
    • 6' Nice work from Sylvain Marveaux as he embarks on a driving run through midfield after collecting a pass from Mathieu Debuchy. The midfielder really has started to flourish in recent months.
    • 4' Cabaye delivers a dangerous inswinging free-kick from the right and Mike Williamson gets free at the back post. However, he swings a leg at the ball and misses, displaying why he is a centre-back and not a striker.
    • 3' Two fine defensive headers from Coloccini as Newcastle clear from a Reading free-kick. Newcastle will miss him dearly if he does negotiate his exit.
    • 2' Cisse starts as Newcastle's lone striker with Shola Ameobi out wide on the right. Cisse has Ba's boots to fill, but last season he showed he was capable of stepping up.
    • 1' KICK OFF! Newcastle shooting left to right in their traditional stripes, Reading in their canary yellow change kit.
    • 14:55 Reports are emerging that Newcastle have struck a deal for Montpellier captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa. He is an impressive centre-back who can also play in midfield if required. Suspect he will be coming in as a replacement for Fabricio Coloccini, who has asked to leave the club.
    • 14:50 Reading have already signed a couple of players in January - Kelly, who starts today, and Daniel Carrico from Sporting Lisbon, who doesn't. However, Brian McDermott isn't done yet. Reading pushing for further signings
    • 14:45 The snow is absolutely tipping down at St James' Park. Lots of snoods, scarves, tights and gloves on display here. There was no real danger of the game being called off though - undersoil heating keeping the turf nice and green.
    • 14:40 Newcastle start today just two points clear of the relegation zone, with Reading five points behind in 19th. It's a huge game for both sides, and Alan Pardew admitted as much this week. Pardew eyes magic '40' number
    • 14:35 Newcastle had a setback in the transfer market this week when top target Loic Remy opted to cash in on a move to QPR. That means a replacement for Demba Ba is still much sought-after, with responsibility for goalscoring now placed firmly on the shoulders of Papiss Cisse.
    • 14:30 Reading make three changes as Stephen Kelly makes his debut following his move from Fulham and Garath McCleary and Mikele Leigertwood also come into Brian McDermott's midfield.
    • 14:25 Newcastle make two changes following a 0-0 draw against Norwich as Yohan Cabaye makes his first start since returning from injury and Shola Ameobi also comes in. James Perch and Gabriel Obertan drop to the bench.
    • 14:20 NEWCASTLE: Krul, Debuchy, Williamson, Coloccini, Santon, Anita, Cabaye, Marveaux, Gutierrez, Shola Ameobi, Cisse. Subs: Elliot, Perch, S Taylor, Bigirimana, Obertan, Sammy Ameobi, Ranger. /// Reading: Federici, Kelly, Pearce, Mariappa, Harte, Kebe, Leigertwood, McAnuff, Guthrie, McClearly, Pogrebnyak. Subs: Taylor, Gunter, Karacan, Morrison, Akpan, Le Fondre, Hunt.

  2. I come from a long line of West Ham supporters and have many cousins in Newcastle so I always look at their results and read the match reports and there is one question I always ask myself. "Why did Newcastle treet Pardew like the Messia and give him an eight year contract? He ain't got a clue and never will have".

From Ronsenglish, on Mon 21 Jan 13:26
  3. We cannot afford to screw up on games like this . It will come to a nail biting finish at the end of the season and we will go down, probably at the expense of one or maybe two points . Which could have been avoided if we hadnt messed up these 'easy' games .

From JohnnyGurkha, on Mon 21 Jan 11:19
  4. just as well that the small town in Durham did us a favour by beating Wigan. However they will eventually return to their normal losing form and return to the bottom 3 where they were just a few weeks ago. Perhaps we should take heart that if the SMB can climb the table then so can we. In the meantime, please Pardew drop Gutti and Shola. Ashley sack Llambias and open your wallet.

  20. Bloody cold today: 1st Half was not too bad, good goal by Cabaye. Cisse just not up to it. Shola? Get Rid, I`ve always said he is NOT EPL material and has to go. 2nd half was a total disaster. The substotutes of Cabaye was okay as the lad was out on his feet, needs more games under his belt. But the other substitutes by Pardew were of desperation rather than tactics, gave away 2 SLOPPY goals AGAIN! Second half really was awful.
