Premier League - Walters' 100th game for Stoke turns into nightmare

Jon Walters has been a key part of Stoke City's success in the Premier League, but will wish to forget his horror show against Chelsea at the weekend. More

    • - Don't forget you can watch highlights of this match, along with every Premier League game, from 00:01 on Monday morning (UK only).
    • 90+3' The agony is over for Stoke, and that's full-time. Chelsea impressive on their travels once again, and they go third in the table. Thanks for joining me.
    • 90+1' Three minutes of added time to be played.
    • 90' HE'S MISSED IT!! Walters blazes it into the crowd and that completes an absolutely miserable day for the Irishman.
    • 89' PENALTY STOKE! John Terry trips Walters and Andre Marriner points to the spot! Walters to take.
    • 87' The stands are emptying at the Britannia Stadium. One of those days for Stoke who had only lost four games this season before today.
    • 86' Final change from Stoke - Michael Kightly comes on for Matt Etherington.
    • 85' Chelsea seem content to maintain possession and try to keep their shins intact.
    • 84' Cross fired in from the Chelsea left - but Torres can't get a touch.
    • 83' Another Chelsea sub: Paulo Ferreira is on for Cesar Azpilicueta.
    • 81' If it stays like this, it will be Stoke's heaviest home Premier League defeat by a distance - they have never lost by more than two at the Britannia Stadium before.
    • 80' Honestly - it's only 10 minutes. What's wrong with letting Lampard remain captain for the rest of the game? Ridiculous.
    • 79' Chelsea change: John Terry replaces Juan Mata - who delivers the armband from Frank Lampard.
    • 78' Stoke change: Cameron Jerome and Dean Whitehead replace Kenwyne Jones and Charlie Adam.
    • 77' Terry is getting ready to come on...
    • 76' Chelsea knock the ball around, much to Stoke's increasing frustration... 4-0 is a harsh scoreline for the home side, but that's football.
    • 75' Not far away from Charlie Adam, who sends a rasping effort just over from 25 yards.
    • 74' Chelsea are absolutely flying now and they will return to third in the table with this win following Spurs's draw earlier today.
    • 73' GOAL! Eden Hazard! Absolutely smacks in a left-foot shot from 25 yards. great hit!
    • 73' Etherington crosses from the left towards Jones who cannot make good contact on his attempted volley and the ball bounces through to Cech.
    • 72' Torres replaces Demba Ba - Fernando's already scowling. Cheer up, for god's sake...
    • 71' Isn't it strange how Chelsea are better away from their home fans? Oh wait, no it isn't. And speaking of unpopular Spaniards, here comes Fernando Torres.
    • 70' Chelsea free-kick 35 yards out... Luiz strikes it into the wall.
    • 69' Another top class save by Begovic! Ba heads down for Lampard who smacks a close range shot and the Stoke keeper makes a fine reaction stop!
    • 68' And with some Chelsea glory in the offing, John Terry leaps off the bench to do some stretches.
    • 67' Some wags suggested Chelsea should have let Walters take the penalty to complete his hat-trick. I think the correct response to that is 'LOLZ!'
    • 66' And with that, it's surely game over. And Stoke haven't even played particularly badly...
    • 65' GOAL! Frank Lampard rams the penalty into the roof of the net, great spot kick, no chance Begovic.
    • 64' PENALTY CHELSEA!! Mata brought down in the Stoke box by Huth! The German appeared to trip him from behind. Maybe a bit harsh - just a tangle.
    • 64' Poor old Jonathan Walters. The first o.g. was mildly incompetent but that one is just bad luck.
    • 63' It was an inswinging corner from the Chelsea right, Lampard was after it but Walters got there first and nodded it into the net.
    • 62' GOAL!! ANOTHER OWN GOAL! AND IT'S WALTERS AGAIN! Incredible. Chelsea lead 2-0.
    • 60' Tony Pulis looks unimpressed but Etherington was definitely offside and it's hard to argue that a player being tackled isn't interfering with play.
    • 58' Controversy here!! Referee Andre Marriner points to the penalty spot for Azpilicueta's challenge on Etherington but there's an offside flag up! It's Sian Massey again, and it's another good call. Also, it was never a foul on Etherington.
    • 58' Through ball intended for Jones but Luiz, who is playing well, nips in and wins possession.
    • 57' Now Stoke want retribution after Luiz goes in with a high foot attempting to block Shawcross's clearance.
    • 57' Cech cannot get to the corner properly - he's blocked off but manages to get just enough on it to get the ball to relative safety.
    • 56' David Luiz heads behind, corner Stoke...
    • 55' The corner comes in from the right and Huth meets it with a header that spins wide...
    • 54' Steve N'Zonzi! Absolutely drills a 30-yarder and Cech reacts quickly to push it over for a corner.
    • 52' More mithering from both sides as Adam falls over and squashes the already prostrate Bertand. Tempers becoming raised.
    • 51' Begovic makes another sharp save with his legs, keeping the ball out at his near post. Ashley Cole with the shot. The corner comes to nothing.
    • 50' Jonathan Walters races on to a through ball down the left and hits a shot at Cech. In fact, he has already been (correctly) flagged offside. it was Sian Massey, though I don't know why I feel compelled to tell you that.
    • 49' Oh, get up Hazard. He goes down in histrionic fashion when Huth lays a hand on him. A free-kick perhaps, but for goodness sake get on with the game.
    • 48' Interesting stat from Infostrada: 'It is a year since Stoke lost a PL home match when losing at the break – 2-1 to West Brom in Jan 2012.'
    • 47' Ehterington cuts inside as Adam continues his run down the left... but the cross is woeful.
    • 46' Second half under way, with Rafa Benitez still ambling back to the dugout.
    • 45+3' That's half-time, and both managers angrily accost referee Andre Marriner! Does that mean he's doing a pretty even-handed job? Chelsea lead thanks to that stoppage-time goal.
    • 45+3' Walters had to do something as Mata was right behind him, but as it turned out he could only plant a diving header past his own keeper.
    • 45+2' GOAL!! It was coming! Looks like an own goal from Walters from Cesar Azpilicueta's cross from the right.
    • 45+2' The corner is cleared but Chelsea are soon back on the offensive... nervous moments for Stoke.
    • 45+1' Frank Lampard smacks the free-kick into the wall, but the ball is not completely cleared and Chelsea end up with a corner.
    • 45' Adam handballs - surely accidental? - but referee Marriner awards a free-kick to Chelsea as we prepare to enter two minutes of added time.
    • 44' Cameron throws into the box from the right, Walters traps it but then rolls the ball out for a goal kick.
    • 43' Stoke look to break as N'Zonzi finds Walters, but Cole is across to put the ball out for a throw.
    • 42' Wilkinson decks Hazard again - this one much more of a booking than the first one but Andre Marriner keeps his cards in his pocket. But Wilkinson is right on the edge, here.
    • 41' Glenn Whelan! He meets a bouncing ball first time 25 yards out and Cech makes a sharp save. That would almost certainly have been the best goal of Whelan's career had he found the net.
    • 40' I must say the defending from set pieces has been very good in this game. Now it's Stoke's turn to impress. Then Cole smacks a long shot miles over.
    • 39' Mata delivers the free-kick from just outside the box and Shawcross heads it behind for a corner.
    • 38' Hazard makes the most of feather-light contact from Wilkinson and not only wins a free-kick but gets the Stoke full-back booked. Harsh.
    • 36' There's Mata, hitting a brilliantly inventive through ball with the outside of his foot - but Lampard just can't reach it.
    • 35' Interesting game - Stoke on top, but Chelsea have had the two best chances. Good entertainment (unlike the dross that was QPR-Spurs).
    • 34' Ba!! he latches on to a long ball over the top and his low shot brings another good save from Begovic! Ramires pounces on the rebound by Wilkinson flies in with a crucial block!
    • 33' I think it's very restrained of the Stoke fans not to break out the 'Oles' as they stroke it around at the back.
    • 32' Hazard cuts inside from the right and has Ba to aim for in the middle... but it's a poor delivery and Stoke clear.
    • 31' Half an hour gone, and it's been all Stoke. We've not seen anything of Juan Mata, who is normally so influential for Chelsea.
    • 30' Low ball inside from the left to Jones, who recieves the ball with his back to goal and spins, but his shot is blocked.
    • 29' Jones and Walters are a great partnership - they are always finding each other with headers, flicks etc. No wonder they are keeping Crouch out of the team.
    • 28' Ramires will attempt to play on. Doesn't seem to be lasting damage.
    • 27' Ramires is limping after another big collision in midfield - this one with Charlie Adam. Chelsea physio Eva Carneiro comes out and he limps off.
    • 25' Brilliant save Begovic! He made himself big and showed lightning reflexes to keep Stoke on terms. Lampard with the shot after great build-up play by Ramires and Hazard.
    • 24' Cameron's cross is met with a looping header that lands to Walters, who manages to hit himself in the face with a volley!
    • 23' A right old tussle between Ivanovic and Jones results in a free-kick for the Stoke man. Chelsea have been solid in the air so far and will have to be so again.
    • 22' Rafa Benitez, incidentally, is wearing just a regulation suit - no coat for the Chelsea boss despite the chilly weather. Hard man. Meanwhile, softy Tony Pulis is in a big, bulky padded tracksuit thing.
    • 21' There's a Chelsea player on the scoresheet - but he's in Reading. West Brom's Romelu Lukaku has put them in front at the Madejski. Reading v West Brom: LIVE
    • 20' Cech deals well with a pair of Stoke corners, but Chelsea are having to withstand quite a battering.
    • 19' Ramires puts Etherington's cross behind for a corner and still Stoke dominate.
    • 18' Stoke on top at the moment - a corner leads to some head tennis in the Chelsea's box and Cech plucks N'Zonzi's looping effort out of the air.
    • 17' It's a good delivery from Etherington but Ba makes a half-clearance. N'Zonzi fires the ball back in from the right but again Chelsea scramble it away.
    • 16' Now Stoke have a free-kick after Hazard challenges Adam. Looked like a dive to me... anyway, Etherington will whip this in from the left.
    • 15' Barreling challenge from Adam, and Luiz is already complaining to the ref about Stoke's supposed rough-house tactics.
    • 14' As I type the previous comment, Luiz takes a risk with a backpass to Cech that just evades Jones.
    • 13' John Terry watches on from the bench - in fact, Chelsea's defending has improved markedly during the captain's injury-enforced absence.
    • 12' We have our first Premier League goal of the day - courtesy of Sebastian Larsson. Premier League scores and scorers
    • 11' Throw-in from the Stoke right, Jones tries to help it on but Bertrand puts the ball out for a corner.
    • 10' Down goes David Luiz after an aerial challenge with Walters. He's holding his back, but there appears to be no lasting damage.
    • 10' Ramires chops Adam just insisde the Stoke half - another chance to move the ball into Chelsea territory here.
    • 9' Hazard darts away from his man on the right and crosses low... cleared.
    • 7' Chance for Jones! A Walters shot ricochets into his path but he drags his left-foot effort wide! A good opportunity, even on his weaker foot.
    • 6' Stoke free-kick about 45 yards from goal. It's lumped into the mixer and Cole heads out for a throw.
    • 5' Ba dribbles at his man and ends up in a heap just outside the Norwich box - no foul says ref Andre Marriner.
    • 4' The corner comes to nothing, and away come Stoke. Kenwyne Jones, who is wanted by Swansea, has pretty much displaced Peter Crouch from Tony Pulis's first-choice XI these days.
    • 3' Ramirez bursts into the box but cannot get his left-foot shot on target - hits a defender and goes out. Corner Chelsea...
    • 2' If you're wondering, the David Luiz haircut isn't that drastic. It's just the same as before, just shorter (such is the nature of haircuts).
    • 1' Game on! Stoke play from left to right as we see it in their red and white striped home shirt. Chelsea all in blue.
    • 14:59 Not only is David Luiz back at centre-back, he's had a haircut. Bad news for Samson fans...
    • 14:57 The teams are out to a tremendous ovation at the Britannia Stadium.
    • 14:55 The omens really are not good for Stoke today. Chelsea have never lost a Premier League match to them - not even one.
    • 14:50 The last four Premier League games between Chelsea and Stoke have seen just four goals scored in total, so don't expect too many fireworks today.
    • 14:45 Chelsea have won seven and lost none of the nine Premier League meetings with the Potters and had two FA Cup wins since Stoke last tasted victory over the Blues in the League Cup in October 1995.
    • 14:40 Stoke boss Tony Pulis was singing the praises of Frank Lampard, who starts in midfield for the Blues, this week ": "I think Frank has been a fantastic player for Chelsea. He has been unbelievable, and he is a great lad - they tell me he is a real top professional."
    • 14:35 Chelsea are in desperate need of a win this afternoon having lost two of their last three matches. They've been all too patchy of late, sometimes banging in hatfuls of goals and at other times looking like also-rans rather than European champions.
    • 14:30 You can see why Rafa Benitez has gone with Ba up front: the striker has bagged four goals in his four matches against Stoke since moving to England.
    • 14:25 The subs benches in full: Stoke - Sorensen, Whitehead, Upson, Kightly, Crouch, Shotton, Jerome. //// Chelsea - Turnbull, Terry, Ake, Ferreira, Marin, Oscar, Torres.
    • 14:22 Also among the subs is John Terry, who said during the week that his knee is better but that he is struggling for a bit of general fitness.
    • 14:21 So the big news of the day is that Demba Ba starts up front for Rafa Benitez's side, with Fernando Torres on the bench.
    • 14:20 TEAMS: STOKE - Begovic; Cameron, Shawcross (c), Huth, Wilkinson; Walters, Whelan, Nzonzi, Etherington; Adam; Jones. //// CHELSEA - Cech; Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Luiz, Cole; Hazard, Lampard (c), Ramires, Bertrand; Mata, Ba.
    • 14:15 Welcome to our LIVE coverage of Chelsea's trip to play Stoke City in the Premier League.
