    • - Ferguson and the United players applaud the travelling supporters, who don't seem even remotely bothered by the result. Sir Alex says his goodbyes to Manchester United.
    • 90+4' There's the final whistle! It's somehow appropriate that Sir Alex Ferguson should bow out with a game as crazy and goal-filled as any in his long and illustrious career. Not the result United wanted, but a terrific match all the same...
    • 90+4' More chaos at the back for United but the cross floats just over Fortune... seconds left.
    • 90+3' United attack with menace before Buttner booms a cross into the crowd.
    • 90+2' Valencia digs out a cross from the United right but it's over everyone... then a Giggs delivery is held by Foster.
    • 90+1' Shane Long volleys just over but there's a flag up for offside against the Irishman.
    • 90+1' FOUR MINUTES of added time to be played.
    • 90' GIGGS! Hits a left-foot shot from 25 yards but it's charged down at the edge of the box.
    • 89' Fortune drives a shot from the edge of the box which is blocked but only as far as Lukaku... United all at sea.
    • 88' They're laughing on the United bench, but they won't be if United concede again - that would be an unprecedented collapse in the Ferguson era.
    • 87' A second-half hat-trick from Romelu Lukaku, and this must go down as one of the most extraordinary of Alex Ferguson's 1,500 games in charge of Manchester United!
    • 86' GOAL!! IT'S FIVE ALL!! Romelu Lukaku bundles the ball in from close range and West Brom have pulled off an extraordinary comeback!
    • 85' Buttner fires over the bar from outside the box - anyone's guess what the last five minutes have in store...
    • 84' There were all of 47 seconds between those goals from Lukaku and Mulumbu...
    • 83' Now Rio Ferdinand is on for United, replacing Jonny Evans.
    • 83' Ah, there's the Scholesy special! He hacks Claudio Yacob and is duly booked.
    • 82' GOAL!! This is outrageous! Youssouf Mulumbu makes it 4-5! Jones crosses low, Mulumbu finishes calmly into the bottom left corner and it's game on! Amazing!
    • 81' GOAL! Romelu Lukaku scores again! He runs onto a fine through ball, takes a touch and finishes left-footed!
    • 81' Scholes thinks about a trademark cynical tackle on the marauding Jones but actually pulls out of it! Jones's low shot is held by Lindegaard.
    • 80' More changes for West Brom - Shane Long and James Morrison go off. Markus Rosenberg and Marc-Antoine Fortune replace them.
    • 79' United mess about interminably in the box with Van Persie and Giggs exchanging passes until the Welshman tries a chip that lands on top of the goal.
    • 78' The game has slowed to a virtual walking pace. Neither side look particularly interested, truth be told.
    • 76' United knock the ball around nonchalantly until a chipped cross from the left hits the bar and comes back out!
    • 75' Lukaku! Storms onto the ball at the edge of the box and hits a low side-footer just wide! Should have hit the target.
    • 73' A slight scuffle as Buttner goes down on the United left and grabs the ball, then two WBA players try to wrestle it off him...
    • 72' Hernandez into the box... he looks for Scholes instead of shooting and wastes possession. Sentiment clouding Hernandez's decision-making there.
    • 71' Lukaku hits a low, long-range shot that bobbles its way past everybody and sneaks wide of the right-hand post.
    • 70' West Brom aren't happy about that challenge on Mulumbu at the edge of the box - Jones flew in, but it does seem he took the ball. Referee Oliver let that one go, but awarded a free-kick moments later.
    • 69' And on comes Paul Scholes for his final match! He replaces Shinji Kagawa. Unsurprisingly, there are no Becks-style tears/
    • 67' Oh, Jonas Olsson, how does he miss that? Morrison delivers the free-kick from the left, Olsson meets it on the volley and sends the ball into orbit! Horrible miss!
    • 65' Morrison crosses from the right side... it floats between the United goal and the onrushing forwards.
    • 64' This is a great finish for Sir Alex Ferguson - plenty of the flair and free-flowing football that have characterised his reign.
    • 63' GOAL! Javier Hernandez finally gets his goal, and it's an assist for Ryan Giggs! He crosses low from the left, the ball beats Foster and Hernandez finishes into the empty net from a couple of yards! 5-2.
    • 61' Scholes is now warming up and he will soon be on for his last game before retiring.
    • 60' Manchester United change: Ryan Giggs comes on to replace Tom Cleverley - of course the old stager will be around next season.
    • 59' West Brom work it into the box and there's a vital touch to take the sting out of Mulumbu's shot.
    • 57' Ryan Giggs goes for a jog down the touchline, bringing huge cheers from the visiting fans.
    • 56' Great block from McAuley to deny Hernandez with yet another attempt on goal.
    • 55' That looks a massive handball from Olsson as he blocks Valencia's cross, but ref Michael Oliver merely awards a corner.
    • 54' That was Robin van Persie's 30th goal of a glittering season for United - a bit of a poacher's special, showing he can score the mundane as well as the spectacular.
    • 53' GOAL! Robin van Persie restores United's two-goal lead, stabbing the ball into the roof of the net from an Antonio Valencia cross!
    • 52' Brunt delivers a great-looking cross from the left but there is nobody in the middle to meet it and the ball bounces apologetically away...
    • 51' United respond through Anderson, who sidefoots goalwards from 25 yards - Foster sees it all the way and gathers.
    • 50' GOAL!! Now it really is interesting! Lukaku sidefoots goalwards from the edge of the box, and the ball somehow squirms through Lindegaard's hands to nestle in the bottom-right corner!
    • 49' Arsenal have taken the lead against Newcastle, which puts them on course for the Champions League.
    • 48' Lukaku gets on the ball and drives inside from the left to the edge of the box, but his attempted shot is blocked.
    • 47' Long is penalised for a foul as he chases a through ball, much to the chagrin of the home fans. Fergie is still signing autographs.
    • 46' It's Liam Ridgewell who has gone off, so this is an attacking change from Steve Clarke as he chases the game.
    • 46' Half-time change for West Brom, who are bringing on Romelu Lukaku to play his last game before returning to Chelsea at the end of his loan.
    • 45+3' Half-time, and United lead 3-1. WBA showing signs of life but have a big job on in the second half.
    • 45+2' Tom Cleverley delivers a corner from the United left... over everyone and out for a goal kick.
    • 45+1' Lindegaard drops a cross - hard to believe there was ever a genuine debate about who out of him and David De Gea was better...
    • 45' Shane Long nearly pulls back another, but Evans denies him with a last-gasp challenge. Quite a game we've got developing.
    • 44' It has been a very impressive performance from United, who are providing a fitting finale for Fergie.
    • 43' GREAT SAVE FOSTER! He saves Hernandez's low shot woth his legs, but the ball ricochets back off McAuley and nearly loops over Foster, who claws it over for a corner!
    • 41' This is easily the home side's best spell of the game, and they have responded to the crowd's restlessness after that third United goal.
    • 40' GOAL! And they've got one back! Buttner concedes possession, WBA work it wide and cross low for James Morrison who beats Lindegaard with a low finish.
    • 39' Despite that chance the home side are starting to liven up...
    • 38' What a miss! Chicharito prods the ball goalwards after Valencia does brilliantly to keep it in play, but the Mexican sends his shot wide!
    • 36' Hernandez goes close as he sprints through the left channel and shoots from the top-left corner but can only ruffle the side netting.
    • 35' Elsewhere in the race for fourth, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal are all drawing, so it's Spurs who miss out at things stand.
    • 34' Swinging cross into the United box from Jones, headed clear. But it's slightly better from the home team.
    • 33' The game pauses while Buttner receives treatment for an injury. He got clocked in the face.
    • 32' Rather a resigned look among the home fans - some of whom are heading down the tunnels. An early half-time cuppa or have they seen enough?
    • 31' Brunt's cross from the left is deflected up into the air - Long meets it and heads high over the bar.
    • 30' GOAL!! Alex Buttner!! The left-back finishes a lovely floweing United move - Hernandez lays off to Cleverley who rolls it out wide, and Buttner drives an emphatic finish into the right corner!
    • 28' Better defending from WBA this time as Olsson heads clear a Valencia cross.
    • 27' The away fans in very good voice - United can be a bit sterile at home but on their travels they are as noisy as anyone.
    • 26' Cleverley chips into the box.. Hernandez just beats the offside trap and leaps to meet the ball, but Foster is there to block it at close range!
    • 24' Hernandez! A very strange one there - he leaps to head a cross from the right but gets it completely wrong, heading the ball back away from goal!
    • 23' Buttner curls in a cross from the left - Carrick leaps highest but cannot make contact.
    • 22' Graham Dorrans strikes a speculative 25-yarder but it was always curling wide.
    • 21' All I've got for you is another stat: Manchester United have never lost in the PL from a 2-goal leading margin. However, they have drawn on 10 occasions in the PL era including one 3-goal leading margin.
    • 20' Finally a decent spell of possession for the home team, with Morrison, Brunt and Yacob to the fore.
    • 18' It takes a United player to raise the temperature here as Jonny Evans flies into a challenge around halfway.
    • 17' Goals flying in all over the country, and you can follow them all in our Premier League score centre.
    • 16' United stroke the ball around largely unmolested. Very much an exhibition feel to this game. Yacob attempts a sliding challenge but tackles nothing but thin air.
    • 14' Not much happening on the pitch so it's more wittering from me - in fact, a stat from Infostrada Sports: 'Manchester United benefited from a 6th own goal this season – outright more than any other club.'
    • 13' Before this game there was a 10-point gap between Liverpool in 7th and WBA in 8th - it could be as much as 13 points at the end of play.
    • 12' It's not quite fair to say there's nothing at stake for West Brom. Unless they win, Swansea City can leapfrog them into eighth place with a victory today over Fulham. Currently goalless there.
    • 11' United have enjoyed a colossal 82 per cent possession so far.
    • 10' That was a touch unfortunate for Olsson, who has had a fine campaign for West Brom. Devilish delivery from Valencia, though.
    • 9' GOAL!! Two for United as Antonio Valencia drives a low cross in from the right and Jonas Olsson diverts the ball into his own net!
    • 8' Shane Long turns and pings a volley against the post - cracking technique but the whistle had already gone.
    • 6' GOAL!! Manchester United in front! Kagawa plants a downward header in from close range to convert Hernandez's right-sided cross. Good work from the Mexican to keep the ball in and deliver accurately.
    • 5' West Brom play it into the box where a flare has landed from the away end...
    • 4' Ben Foster races out of goal to dive on a loose ball. The former United man has been a solid signing for West Brom.
    • 3' A party atmosphere in the stands and the opening stages of this one being played at rather a sedate pace.
    • 2' A beach ball is thrown on to the fringe at the side of the pitch. It's pretty summery weather in the Black Country this afternoon.
    • 1' And off we go! West Brom get the action under way, playing from left to right as we see it. And United get an early throw.
    • 16:01 The pre-match formalities taking slightly longer than usual - Fergie mobbed by autograph hunters though this week he's standing next to Nemanja Vidic, presumably in some 'enforcer' capacity.
    • 15:58 Out come the teams, and there is a guard of honour for Sir Alex Ferguson, who gets warm applause even from the home fans. Nice touch.
    • 15:55 It's not just the end of Alex Ferguson today - Paul Scholes is set to come off the bench for his last game. And elsewhere Jamie Carragher, Phil Neville and Michael Owen head into retirement.
    • 15:50 You can follow the action from all 10 games throughout the afternoon in our Premier League score centre.

    • 15:45 Sir Alex Ferguson: "I have had 39 years as a manager. On that day in 1974 when I started at East Stirling, I had eight players and no goalkeeper. Today I have six goalkeepers and about 100 players. I remember the old chairman Willie Muirhead, he was a great chain smoker. When I asked him for a list of players he started to shake. His cigarette was going 100 miles an hour. .... He gave me a list of eight players and no goalkeeper. I said 'you know it is advisable to start with a keeper'.
    • 15:40 Steve Clarke on West Brom's season: "In the first half of the season I thought it was the easiest job in the world. I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. In the second half of the season I had a rude awakening with different problems and different things to consider. I think next year I will be a better head coach. You have to learn how to react to events. Hopefully I've learned a lot this year and I'll try to learn even more next year."
    • 15:35 Congratulations to Yeovil Town who have just beaten Brentford 2-1 in the League One play-off final at Wembley.

    • 15:30 There's not a huge amount to play for in the Premier League today, but there is quite a nice scuffle for third and fourth place featuring Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.
Benitez and Wenger on possible play-off
    • 15:25 We're at the Hawthorns today but there's no doubting the star attraction - the programme contains a 40-page Fergie tribute while West Brom say they have never received as many media accreditation requests for a game.
    • 15:20 It's a strange old teamsheet from Fergie for his last hurrah - and of course there's no Wayne Rooney who may well leave Old Trafford this summer after asking for a move.

  1. SUPERMAN We all enjoyed Fergie's disastrous retirement , lucky for United that he is going , what a game full of bravado and mistakes , with WBA scoring 6 and United 4 goals , it's not a good sign for United . Not only United were winning 5 - 2 but United wanted to ' show off their retirement contingent' with the ' old timers Giggs , Scholes and Ferdinand coming on without much energy' , back came WBA with 3 goals in the last 25 minutes ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,what a slap-in-the-face for Red-nose Fergal and please Mister Alexis don't complain about the officials , not this time ......look at your substitution and your relaxed team , don't rely on Webb , Clattenburg , Hoy and Dean, Halsey etc.............and on Fergie-time retirement WAS THE BEST THING YOU HAVE DONE ?

who says this game did not matter says a lie. Manchester United just proved their vulnerability once again. Yes, they are champions but there is much work left to do with this team's defense line. Look at how disastrous Jones has been in all games. Of what is it to score five and concede five? You have been handed the baton of command, Moyes; revamp this team man. Start by letting go the likes of Jones, Anderson, Valencia, etc. Get me a world class goalkeeper and start to win matches, but above all, convince fans again.
