    • - What did you make of the game? Did West Ham deserve to claim all three points? Does Ferguson need to play Rooney in midfield to get the best of him? Let me know on Twitter (@grahamruthven).
    • - United drop two points in their efforts to claim a record 20th league title and on the balance of the contest West Ham deserved at least a point. Very entertaining tie. Stand-out performance by Andy Carrolll, who gave the United backline problems all game.
    • 94' FULL TIME: West Ham 2-2 Manchester United
    • 91' Just before Taylor's effort on goal Hernandez was presented with a glorious chance but Carroll, of all people, made a crucial challenge to deny the Mexican from close range. That was the opportunity.
    • 92' Taylor robs the United backline and charges through on goal but he loses his composure at the right moment and smahes well over.
    • 91' Van Persie whips in a corner but Carroll throws himself at it. Like a horse being thrown out a speeding helicopter.
    • 90' An additional four minutes of stoppage time to be played.
    • 89' Van Persie's clever touch through almost releases Hernandez through on goal but the Mexican was slightly on his heels and can't catch it.
    • 87' Giggs takes on Demel and gets a cross into the box at the second time of asking but it's hoofed clear by Collins.
    • 85' As expected West Ham are now camped in their own half, lumping forward balls to Carroll, who's standing on the half-way line. A flawed tactic.
    • 84' Taylor looks to take a volley first time on the turn but he gets a feeble connection on it and De Gea collects the trickling ball off the turf.
    • 83' News has just reached Upton Park that Manchester City have taken the lead against Wigan. A noticable murmour has just spread through the United crowd.
    • 81' West Ham subs: Kevin Nolan and Mohamed Diame OFF, Jack Collison and Matt Taylor ON.
    • 80' Carrick finds the run of Hernandez inside the box with an inch-perfect pass but the Mexican can't get enough connect on it and Jaaskelainen saves.
    • 79' United cranking up the pressure on the West Ham goal, predictably. This time Van Persie can't find the net, aiming a header towards goal from Valencia's cross.
    • 78' Suspicions of offside about Van Persie's goal. Indeed, the Dutchman appeared to be in an offside position when Kagawa fired at goal.
    • 77' Manchester United sub: Shinji Kagawa OFF, Javier Hernandez ON.
    • 76' Van Persie might've got on the scoresheet but that goal was all about Kagawa. Great turn and shot from the Japanese player. His effort actually hit both posts before falling to Van Persie.
    • 75' GOAL! West Ham 2-2 Manchester United (75 mins - Robin Van Persie). Kagawa strikes the post and the rebound is turned home by Van Persie.
    • 73' Not entirely surprised Rooney was withdrawn by Ferguson. The United number 10 wasn't having a good game. He was man of the match against Stoke at the weekend, where he played in midfield. Does that tell us something?
    • 72' Just get the sense West Ham are going to be pegged back in their own half for much of the remaning 20 minutes or so.
    • 71' Manchester United sub: Wayne Rooney OFF, Ryan Giggs ON.
    • 70' Rafael gets into a forward position, taking the ball from Carrick, but smashing his effort well over the bar. And back he goes to his wing back position, rather sheepishly.
    • 69' Another good save by Jaaskelainen from Van Persie, this time tipping a header from close range over the bar.
    • 68' And now there's activity on the United bench with Ryan Giggs preparing to come on.
    • 67' Should be a like-for-like change for West Ham. Noble will provide some fresh energy in the centre of midfield. Good call by Allardyce. They've started to look a little leggy in the past 10 minutes.
    • 66' West Ham sub: Gary O'Neill OFF, Mark Noble ON.
    • 65' Mark Noble looks to be warming up for West Ham on the sidelines.
    • 64' United beginning to take control of possession again. This second half following the same pattern to the first.
    • 63' After the wonder save from Van Persie that would've been a bit of a howler from Jaaskelainen if that had gone in from Rooney. Incidentally, the West Ham keeper has made more saves than any other Premier League keeper this season.
    • 62' Cleared off the line by Gary O'Neill! A well worked corner from Van Persie finds Rooney on the penalty spot who fires at goal. Jaaskelainen can't hold on to the shot but O'Nell is behind him to clear off the line.
    • 61' Valencia links up with Rooney on the right side to win a corner.
    • 60' Valencia can't find a way past the West Ham defence so he does that thing that Valencia tends to do when he runs out of ideas: fires the ball across goal. This time his effort is blocked.
    • 59' Jaaskelainen pulls of a magnificent save from Van Persie, who connects with Valencia's cross on the volley but the flag is up. The West Ham keeper didn't know that. Still an incredible save.
    • 58' Van Persie tries to wriggle his way through the West Ham backline but is easily dispossessed.
    • 57' With West Ham providing such a physical challenge and a rowdy atmosphere United look very uncomfortable. De Gea has just lumped the ball out of play from the back.
    • 56' Jones strides forward into the West Ham half and picks out Kagawa but he loses possession.
    • 55' Diame fires into the net with his left foot from 20 yards after turning his marker. That was a pearler of a strike.
    • 54' GOAL! West Ham 2-1 Manchester United (54 mins - Mohamed Diame). Wonderful strike from Diame puts the Hammers back in front!
    • 52' Carroll is proving a tricky proposition for United's backline tonight. Ferdinand doesn't look comfortable at all challenging the West Ham frontman in the air. Neither does Rafael, without his Flubber.
    • 51' Carroll almost catches De Gea out from 30 yards but his half volley finds the side netting. The United keeper was backtracking frantically there.
    • 50' Carroll and De Gea are at it again, and this time Probert has had enough and books the West Ham attacker. The Spanish keeper looks up for a physical battle tonight!
    • 49' YELLOW CARD: Andy Carroll (West Ham)
    • 48' United have started the second half as slowly as they started the first. West Ham are winning the ball in places you wouldn't expect United to lose it.
    • 47' Jarvis whips a dangerous cross into the box but Vidic rises highest to head away.
    • 46' Perhaps Van Persie in better goalscoring form would've been more selfish in that position.
    • 45' Great chance for United but between Van Persie and Jones they pass it up. Rooney found Van Persie at the back post but instead of trying for goal himself the Dutchman knocks it down for Jones who can't connect.
    • 45' Man Utd get the second half under way!
    • - What have you made of the first half? Should West Ham be ahead going into the break? Do United need Rooney to impose himself on the game? Let me know on Twitter (@grahamruthven).
    • - Entertaining game at Upton Park. West Ham had the better of the opening 30 minutes but United have played themselves back into this contest, with Kagawa imposing himself on the first half as it wore on.
    • 47' HALF TIME: West Ham 1-1 Manchester United
    • 46' De Gea punches a corner kick away under intense pressure from the West Ham forward-line. He's been flattened. Looked to be Carroll who flew in on him. However, the Spaniard has picked himself up. Quiff still in place.
    • 45' An additional minute of stoppage time to be played at the end of the first half.
    • 44' Rooney loses the ball cheaply 30 yards out and then fouls Diame in frustration. I suppose it's better than kicking someone where it hurts (World Cup 2006) in frustration. He's maturing. Apparently.
    • 43' Nolan goes down under the challenge of Vidic in the box but no penalty. The Serbian did look to clip the ankles of Nolan but was it deliberate? Probably not.
    • 42' A misunderstanding between Valencia and Jones results in the Ecuadorian lumping the ball out of play. He expected Jones to make the run. Ferguson looks livid.
    • 41' Demel works a cross into the penalty area but Carroll can't get enough on his header and De Gea gathers with ease.
    • 40' Interesting stat. In the 22 games Valencia has scored for English teams (Man Utd and Wigan) he's been on the winning side 21 times.
    • 39' United have found their feet as this half has worn on. Kagawa, in particular, has become more influential as the minutes have ticked by.
    • 38' Carrick gives the ball away in a promising position on the edge of the West Ham box. Maybe hold off those Scholes comparisons for now?
    • 37' Van Persie looks for a freekick on the byline after a tussle with Demel but Probert isn't having any of it and points rather forcefully for a goal kick.
    • 36' Valencia's goal means that United have now scored in each of their last 21 league games. The next longest current run? Aston Villa, with five games.
    • 35' Evra drives past Demel on the left before stabbing a cross into the box but Collins defends it well and heads out of danger.
    • 34' Diame cuts inside Rafael and into the penalty area before firing an effort into the side netting.
    • 33' United haven't been at their best but that's what they do best. Grinding out results when they look like losing. West Ham have undoubtedly been the better side.
    • 32' Jones crosses into the box but Van Persie can't get a strong enough connection on his header and glances well wide of the target.
    • 31' Wonderful play by Kagawa to square the ball across the goal line for Valencia. Such a good player to watch.
    • 30' GOAL! West Ham 1-1 Manchester United (30 mins - Antonio Valencia). United pick off West Ham, with Kagawa getting to the byline on the left side before squaring across the face of goal for Valencia to tap in.
    • 28' Van Persie attempts a piece of trickery to get past Joey O'Brien but rather embarrassingly he forgets to take the ball with him. Awkward.
    • 27' Rooney plays a clever little through ball into Patrice Evra who gets to the byline but can't find Kagawa with the cut back. That's better from United.
    • 26' Jussi Jaaskelainen has had nothing to do so far tonight. That'll please the West Ham keeper. In 21 career appearances against United he's kept just two clean sheets.
    • 24' United look very disjointed at the moment. Their passes aren't finding their destination and West Ham are putting them under pressure in the box.
    • 23' A word of warning for West Ham. United have fought back to claim 27 points in the league this season from losing positions.
    • 22' Nolan knocks the ball out of play under no pressure and has a little rueful smile to himself.
    • 21' That Vaz Te goal keeps up West Ham's fairly formidable home record this season. They've scored in all but one of their home league fixtures this season.
    • 20' Kagawa sees his strike at goal charged down by James Collins. That's United's first attempt on goal of the night. It's taken 20 minutes.
    • 19' Jarvis is brought down by Ferdinand inside the area by Probert waves away the rather hopeful claims for a spot kick.
    • 18' United look a little rattled here. That's the first goal they've conceded away goal in over six hours of play.
    • 17' West Ham have been threatening to do that in the opening 16 minutes of this game. Good counter attack by Jarvis who did well to get beyond his man to the byline to stage a cross into Carroll.
    • 16' GOAL! West Ham 1-0 Manchester United (16 mins - Ricardo Vaz Te). West Ham take advantage on the counter, Jarvis crossing for Carroll who knocked down for Vaz Te to turn home.
    • 15' Phil Jones appears to be doing his floating, everywhere at once, midfielder act again. It was actually Sam Allardyce who gave Jones his professional debut at Blackburn.
    • 14' O'Neill finally drives in the corner but Carroll can't divert his header towards goal and drifts harmlessly over.
    • 12' West Ham win a corner but the ball's been lost in the crowd. Give us a minute.
    • 11' United take control of the ball, knocking it around the backlin before working it out to Valencia who tries to get past Jarvis but the ball ricochet's back off the winger for a West Ham goal kick.
    • 10' Terrific atmosphere at Upton Park. How will that atmosphere sound with a running track between the crowd and the pitch?
    • 9' Van Persie whips a corner into the box but it comes to nothing as West Ham launch a counter-attack. That also comes to nothing.
    • 8' Rafael beats Carroll in the air. Remember that film when Robin Williams puts some Flubber on the soles of some basketball players? Like that.
    • 7' Replays show that Carroll's shot actually clipped David De Gea's left-hand post. As I said, mightily close.
    • 6' Of course, two former West Ham favourites return to Upton Park for United in Michael Carrick and Rio Ferdinand. The United support are airing their new favourite chant, a ditty drawing a comparison between Carrick and Paul Scholes. Finally getting the recognition he deserves?
    • 5' Carroll wriggles in and out of more than one challenge on the edge of the box before firing at goal. Kevin Nolan runs across the shot and almost diverts it in but the flag is up. That was mightily close to creeping in!
    • 4' Van Persie gets in behind Demel after West Ham switched off from a throw in but the Dutchman can't find any of his teammates in the box.
    • 3' West Ham have started positively, with Matt Jarvis having a shot from just inside the box charged down by the United backline.
    • 2' Well, West Ham have already lasted longer than they did when these two sides met earlier in the season. Robin Van Persie had already scored the fastest goal of the Premier League season (33 seconds) by this point.
    • 1' Guy Demel fires a cross into Andy Carroll but the pass is too long for the West Ham frontman and has to prevent it from going out for a goal kick.
    • 1' Lee Probert, tonight's referee, gets the first half under way!
    • 19:42 The teams emerge to a cascade of bubbles. At some stadiums they have a confetti cannon. At West Ham they have a bubble cannon.
    • 19:40 The statistics don't look good for West Ham. United have won their last eight league fixtures against the Hammers, scoring 22 goals in those games and conceding only three. West Ham's last league win over United was a 2-1 win at Upton Park back in November 2007.
    • 19:40 A win would mean United would only need four points from their remaining five league games to claim a record 20th title. Should United win tonight and Manchester City lose at Wigan they would only require a single point.
    • 19:35 As has been the case often this season West Ham will use Andy Carroll as their focal point of attack. The on loan Liverpool striker admitted at the weekend that he would be open to a permanent move to Upton Park in the summer.
    • 19:30 Wayne Rooney played as a midfielder against Stoke at the weekend but it looks like he'll play in a more familiar atacking role tonight. Unless Kagawa is pushed up the field, slotting Rooney once again in at centre midfield.
    • 19:25 United have gone six hours without conceding a goal away from home and have won seven of their last eight Premier League games. West Ham might struggle to get past a first-choice United backline tonight.
    • 19:20 As for West Ham, they're unbeaten in their last three league games, makng just one change from the side that drew with Southampton at the weekend. Winston Reid comes in for James Tomkins.
    • 19:15 Looks like Shinji Kagawa will play in a wider position than his preferred role tonight. Phil Jones and Michael Carrick will make up United's central midfield partnership. There's a case to be made that this is actually United's strongest line-up.
    • 19:10 TEAM NEWS: West Ham - Jaaskelainen; Demel, Reid, Collins, O'Brien; Nolan, Diame, Jarvis, O'Neil; Vaz Te, Carroll. /// Manchester United - De Gea; Rafael, Ferdinad, Vidic, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Jones, Kagawa; Rooney, Van Persie.

  1. great result good game shame man u fans have such a one sided view of things .

From Chris, on Thu 18 Apr 16:28
  2. Brian you plum watch a reply of it again....carroll was running into the box and as he jumped to try to head the ball vidic pushed him in the back which sent him flying into the goalie. Thats why he didn't get carded for it...some people only see a one sided shallow view of things don't they!

From ANDREW, on Thu 18 Apr 13:57
  3. SUPERMAN We have Peter and Paul here commenting , one for and one against the Man.Ure , one criticising his own team players , the other the officials and that dreaded Glaswegian Loony Alexander Fergasson , both are telling us what we already know but none is saying how bias this season and several other season have been in favour of Mancaster United ..........................is it going to be the same next season , are we to listen and watch that diabolic man on our screens , with that monstrous face spitting obscenities at everyone , red, blue ,green , black or yellow ............he is an embarrassment to HUMANITY AN ABCESS ON OUR CULTURE , A PLAGUE ON OUR MORALS AND INTELLIGENCE .

Caroll 8 and Vidic 6 ?????????????? Caroll didn't won a single duel against Vidic. If you rate him for that brutal start over De Gea, maybe he deserves that mark. And Rooney, with similar performance against Stoke - the man of the match, yesterday almost flop of the match? Do you, mister Eurosport expert even watch the matches, or...?

VP was not off side! The ball nicked the defender on its way to the woodwork and the goal was rightly given. However, Carrol should have been red carded for his dangerous and violent assault on De Gea.

From BRIAN, on Thu 18 Apr 3:41
  6. People forget one thing ....Schitty have to win 5 from 6 and hope Manure lose all 5 from 5 . It simply aint going to happen people ...Go home drink your Bovril and accept Sir Wino of Govan is picking up a 20th title.

From Daffy, on Thu 18 Apr 0:52
  7. there should be a list for the most offside goals scored, I wonder who would be at the top. We could also have a list of what teams had the most good goals scored against them ruled out. Do you think the same team would be at the top of both lists? Come on Yahoo, you can do it.

From EDWARD, on Thu 18 Apr 0:52
  8. Another off side goal for alex, would you believe it. I hear some bookies are to offer odds on how many off side goals manure score.

From EDWARD, on Thu 18 Apr 0:45
  9. You can have the very best strikers in the universe but if the midfield is so weak that they can't hold the ball up or feed the strikers what's the use. The Midfield just slow the game down for Man U , they are creativelesss and unable to hold the ball up. Today they coyuldn't even beat the fiurst man -poor to say tvery he least. Drastic action needed.

From Politician Stole My Money, on Wed 17 Apr 23:41
  10. The truth is that Man U just cannot compete witrh the rest. So we have to rely on mediocre players like Valencia , Young, Smalling and Rafael -mediocre at best.

From Politician Stole My Money, on Wed 17 Apr 23:36
  11. Fergie needs to strengthen at the heart of United.......they are soft and invisble, a real push over and that is so clear for everyone to see.

From Politician Stole My Money, on Wed 17 Apr 23:35
  12. Weak Weak Invisble Midfield.......once again. When oh when are we gonna get some reinforments.

From Politician Stole My Money, on Wed 17 Apr 23:30
  13. I take it pauls a bit of an idiot then.....persil was off side by half a yard and the goal should not have stood. Next...we have one of the biggest fan bases in the premier league and the olympic stadium will be filled!!!

Now now then ladies there is no need to to talk c--p all night, here it is in a nut shell, West Bum played not to bad, which for me is a bit strange as they only raise there game against the big boys. While Man ( CHAMPIONS ) Utd did not play to there normal majestic standards... How ever its not that surprising playing in that tiny ground of theres, but lucky for West bum that they are moving to a much bigger and greater ground so as the big teams in the league will be able to fill for them as they don't have the fan base to fill it. Then in a few seasons time when they get relegated they will have the biggest bunch of dirty hacking f-----g w-----s in the Championship with the best ground. NICEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

From Paul, on Wed 17 Apr 22:21
  15. I have to add to my comment (no.208). Having seen the red faced Tesco carrier bags under eyes scots id/ot on sky, how can he possibly say that Carroll should have got a red card for the challenge on De Gea but in the same breath say he did not know Van (torres) Persie was a yard offside ....He is a fool.

From Peter, on Wed 17 Apr 22:14
  16. Sir Alex saw everything except the illegal goal typical for the #$%$ scotsman. West Ham robbed of 2 points by bias officials. Alan Smith never mentioned West Ham throughout the second half Sky TV now officially Man Utd fan club. PS we still love Rio and Michael Carrick.

From Tony G, on Wed 17 Apr 22:12
  17. Rooney is not fit , he is a fat overrated player

From Willo Pasko, on Wed 17 Apr 22:10
  18. I think Man Utd have a balance problem or the wrong studs they keep falling over f-----g load of w-----s.

From IAN, on Wed 17 Apr 22:05
  19. There are four or five of tonight's United team who should be sold, they are useless. Start with Ferdinand, Evra, Valencia, Carrick then look at Rooney, Jones and pension off Giggs, Nani and Young can go too, and get a decent midfield. Give Zaha a chance and Hernandez a proper run in the team. I personally don't rate Welbeck, certainly not as a striker and possibly as nothing more than a sub, he certainly isn't an impact player. Pretty drastic but then that's due to the state of the current squad.
