Shaun Maloney rescued an unlikely point with an 89th minute goal as Wigan drew 2-2 with relegation rivals Southampton at the DW Stadium. More
All square after a brilliant game at the DW. Southampton perhaps deserved all the points but credit to Wigan for sticking to a difficult task.
90' Wigan make their final change Henriquez comes on.
89' Somehow Wigan equalise. The corner goes high and loopy but Scharner wins the header and finds Maloney on his own at the far post. The Scot sweeps the ball homs easily and it is 2-2. how Wigan have done this is beyond me.
85' WHAT A GOAL. Absolutely lightning break from Southampton as Ward-Prowse broke from the penalty area. He runs the ball down the left wing before laying in Rodriguez on the wing. He waltzs past Mcmanaman and crosses into the six-yard box and finds Schneiderlin who make sup for his earlier miss by sweeping the ball home. Fantastic goal.
81' Southampton with their final change as Puncheon comes off for teenager Ward-Prowse.
75' Wigan need to change something again. Mcmanaman comes on for Espinoza to try and get some sort of control in this match for Wigan.
73' Another chance as Luke Shaw crosses deep to Lambert who sets himself for a volley at the far post but it flashes across the face of goal and for a goal kick.
72' Lallana hits the post as Wigan fail to clear from the corner. The ball drops to the midfielder in the penalty area and his low drive beats AL Habsi at his near post but hits the woodwork and bounces clear. Wigan are really hanging on here.
68' Southampton break after Wigan pressure and the cross find Lambert in the middle. He heads against the Wigan defender and at the second attempt blasts into the stomach of McCarthur. good defending.
64' Completely deserved and it was definitely coming. Southampton pass the ball for a long time before Cork floats the ball into the box. Rodriguez wins the first header and the 50-50 in the six-yard box between Lambert and the 'keeper is won by Lambert and he nods in with ease. Deserved equaliser.
60' Change for Southampton as club captain Adam Lallana comes on to replace Clyne.
59' Cork spreads a wonderful pass to Lambert on the rigth side of the penalty area who absolutely skins Figueroa. His cross finds Schneiderlin in the six yard area with the goal gaping but the midfielder scuffs it and Wigan clear. It was easier to score.
57' First change for Wigan as Gomez comes on for Stam who has had a quiet game.
53' Jack Cork receives a yellow card for a late tackle on Espinoza as the Wigan midfielder tried to break.
49' Jack Cork crosses from the right and just as it looks like the ball will reach Lambert with a free header, Scharner reaches up and heads the ball away. Great header.
48' Half time substitution as Davis comes on for Ramirez. Looks like that injury in the first half was more than just impact.
46' Southampton kick-off the second half and will need to come from behind to get anything from this game. Wigan will have to improve if they're to keep this Saints side out.
Southampton have dominated the play but not found any joy. Pochettino will have earmarked this game as potentially his first three points as Saints manager but how can he change things to turn the result around? Tweet me @G_Pavlou
And that is half-time. It's been frantic and frenetic at times with Southampton dominating most of the play but it is Wigan who go in 1-0 up.
45+2 Another chance as Lambert floats a great cross to Rodriguez at the far post. The young striker gets up and heads across goal but as his cross was about to drop to Ramirez, Caldwell steps across first and clears.
45+1 Jay Rodriguez finds loads of space wide on the six yard box. He doesn't look up as he crosses first time and only finds Caldwell who clears. Southampton finishing strong here.
38' Clyne drives down the line and wins a corner off McCarthy. The corner is a good one and Hooiveld glances it to the far post but the header just started to curl away and it goes wide. I think the man on the line might have had it covered anyway but a good effort.
36' The goal kick goes short to Caldwell but as the goalscorer pleads for a pass, he is closed down again. Luckily for him the deflection goes straight through to Al Habsi.
32' The ball finds the feet of Beausejour on the touchline and Rodriguez slides in. It would seem the Wigan man nicked the ball away first and it goes down as a yellow card to the Southampton man. On replay, the follow through didn't look nice for the Chilean. Deserved yellow.
26' McCarthur tries to clear on the edge of his area but Schneiderlin closes down and the ricochet almost ends up in the top corner but Al Habsi makes a superb save to tip it over.
25' Beausejour swings in the corner and somehow Gary Caldwell finds himself with acres of space on the penalty spot. He gets excellent power from a standing header into the bottom left corner. Boruc has no chance. Great header.
17' Clyne is sold short and Espinoza nicks the ball to Maloney who takes on two Southampton defenders but is forced wider and wider and as he tries to get his cross in, runs the ball out of play.
16' Brilliant pass by Lambert from the left wing. He crosses the ball to the penalty spot and finds Ramirez breaking through the middle. He is completely on his own but his first-time side-footed effort goes miles over the bar. Wigan defenders looking for offside but he was well on. Great chance.
13' Fantastic football from Wigan and Beausejour is found on the left wing. He sees Di Santo make a dash into the box and his low whipped cross finds the Argentine. His touch takes the ball to the bottom corner of the goal but Boruc sticks out a paw and manages to turn the ball away. Great save.
