    • - AND SHAY GIVEN SAVES AGAIN! A superb save once again from the Irish keeper, guessing right, diving well and saving brilliantly from the goalscorer of earlier, Luton Shelton. City are through!!!!!!!
    • - Aalborg score their fourth - but Richard Dunne knocks his penalty in to keep the advantage despite the keeper going the right way!
    • - Wright-Phillips holds his nerve to score City's third, and it's advantage to the English club...!
    • - Next two go in - BUT THEN GIVEN SAVES THE THIRD PENALTY!!!! TERRIFIC SAVE!!!!
    • 120' First two penalties are flawless strikes: 1-1!
    • 120' There's the whistle: penalties it is. If they lose this, City will look at themselves in the mirror tomorrow morning and wonder what on earth happened. Let's hope for their sake that they don't lose it...
    • 120' Dead legs all round, seconds on the clock... penalties coming in a few seconds, surely.
    • 119' Aalborg push up in a bit of space... can they make a final dash? No. Now it's City's turn, but they can't make it happen either.
    • 116' Just a few minutes left now, and the players are trotting rather than running. No prospect of a goal at this rate...
    • 113' Nasty foul by Johansson on Wright-Phillips, but both sides seem to be settling for penalties lottery now. Why? Go out and win it, you fools!
    • 110' Lots of heading back and forth from the corner leads to nothing for Aalborg. Will both sides settle for corners?
    • 109' It's aerial ping-pong at the moment in the middle of the park - all pretence of guile, tactics and creativity have gone out of the window... And Aalborg win a corner!
    • 107' Sparky brings on Elano at the expense of Kompany. Another move with a potential shoot-out in mind...
    • 106' Aalborg bring off Caca and bring on Kristensen. Maybe a penalty specialist?
    • 105' City keep on pushing, Aalborg keep hitting back on the break... but to no avail, and the whistle goes for the end of the first extra period. Tense stuff now!
    • 104' Free Kick in from Garrido, but it's cleared by Aalborg with ease. No danger there...
    • 102' It's classic, tired, end-to-end extra time stuff so far - but then Shelton gets his head on to a lovely cross for Aalborg, and had he been able to aim it better he would have troubled Given there.
    • 99' City pump the ball up in to the penalty box and look the more likely of the two teams to create something so far.
    • 96' Robinho comes off and Felipe Caicedo comes on. Sparky wants to try and win this, it's a positive move to replace his least-effective attacker.
    • 92' Extra time is under way, and City start brightly with Wright-Phillips again creating on the right. But the sides know each other well by now, and the danger is cut out quickly.
    • 90'+2 The whistle goes, and we're in to extra time... Unbelievable stuff here in Denmark. Just when they thought it was all over.
    • 90' After the melee of pointless protest it's Michael Jakobsen who steps up for the home side - AND SCORES!!! Extra time beckons!!
    • 87' There was a suggestion of handball about Shelton's control immediately before the goal... still, no matter now, and Aalborg are suddenly enthused. AND THEY HAVE A PENALTY!!!! Ched Evans handballs from a corner!!!
    • 84' GOAL FOR AALBORG!!!! It's the ludicrously-named Luton Shelton, who picks up the ball from a long ball in off the right, controls down with his chest and hammers an unstoppable right-foot shot in from eight yards out. It'll be a frantic last five minutes now!
    • 83' Ireland releases Evans, who gets in a shot that Zaza saves well.
    • 82' SO CLOSE FOR CITY!!!!! Ireland cuts the ball back in from the end of the pitch and finds Wright-Phillips on the edge of the six-yard box. And it rattles the crossbar!!
    • 80' Aalborg striker Shelton gets on the end of a huge long ball, controls extremely well - and shoots on target... BUT GIVEN SAVES! Great effort by the home side man, but Given just about trapped the ball between body and left hand.
    • 78' Nice little run from Wright-Phillips, who gets to the edge of the box and seems about to unleash hell on the ball... but he runs out of space and doesn't even get a shot in.
    • 76' City are hardly trying now - you wonder if Sparky told 'em not to bother getting too stuck in at half time - and are happy to just soak up Aalborg's pressure. For all the home team's effort they still have had just five shots, none of which have been on target.
    • 73' Stephen Ireland makes the most miraculous recovery since Lazarus, waltzing back on to the pitch after a bit of a rub from the magic hands of the trainer.
    • 70' Stephen Ireland's been clobbered as he landed after challenging for a ball in the air - he's off the pitch for treatment. An injury would be very bad for City's season, and indeed their hopes of winning this tounrnament...
    • 67' Another penalty shout for Aalborg as Beauchamp tangles with Onuoha and goes down - but the ref waves him to his feet and books him for what was a crass and unconvincing dive.
    • 65' Quick update: Risgard was booked for protesting too much about the penalty, and another over-reaction a minute later almost gets him sent off. The ref contents himself with a stern word.
    • 63' Another good move from Aalborg - who are still fuming about the penalty that wasn't - sees a nice move from Risgard on the right end in a good ball across. But none of the Aalborg players can get on the end! They look a different team now, had they played like this from the start Mark Hughes's boys could have been in for a match.
    • 61' HUGE PENALTY SHOUT FOR AALBORG!!! Garrido slides in on Johansson and takes him out big-time, the replay shows a clear penalty kick for the home side but from the ref's viewpoint he'd have struggled to see whether the defender got the ball or not. A major let-off for City!
    • 60' Wright-Phillips charges up the right and in to the box and gets a cross in, but none of the City strike force can get on to the end of the ball before being bundled off it by the defence.
    • 58' Risgard hits a long, driven shot for the hosts - a nicely struck ball from 30 yards, but it's well wide straight from the foot.
    • 55' Wayne Bridge replaced by Garrido - no apparent injury reason, but Bridge had been completely anonymous tonight.
    • 54' Terrific chance for Aalborg as they get the ball well in to the box, and Shelton heads it down for Caca - who DRIVES WIDE. Best chance so far for the hosts.
    • 51' Evans gets on to a through-ball - but he's off-side. Missed opportunity there, though his shot ballooned well over the bar.
    • 50' A couple of City players get half-chances to have a swipe from the corner, but though the situation looks good they just don't quite get the chance they need.
    • 49' Ched Evans picks up the ball on the edge of the box and quickly has a dip - it's not great but not bad, and deflects off for a corner.
    • 47' Unconvincing penalty shout from Aalborg as Risgard goes down in the box while attempting to get on to Nomvethe's cross.
    • 46' Due's injury has seen him come off - it did look bad - and he's replaced by Nomvethe as we get under way for the second half.
    • 45'+1 That's half-time - and half of the job well-completed by City.
    • 45' One extra minute to play in what's been a quiet first half - City have looked by far the better side so far, even if their hosts' long-ball tactics have given them a couple of looks at goal.
    • 43' Robinho cuts in from the left, making a lovely run and earning a chance to shoot from the tightest of angles - he earns a corner, from which Zabaleta gets a chance to try a 25-yard curler that he puts just wide.
    • 41' A long free kick in from Aalborg almost finds Shelton in the six-yard box, but the tall head of Onuoha jumps in the way at the last minute. I still don't see how Aalborg think they've got a chance by knocking in long balls and praying that they'll nick the odd goal...
    • 40' Anders Due goes down for treatment on a hobbled right leg after a clash with Kompany. This looks like an early bath.
    • 38' Shaun Wright-Phillips is rubbing his knee as if he's picked up a bit of a knock - let's hope the inspirational winger doesn't have a problem.
    • 36' Another Aalborg attack - which means 'another Aalborg long ball' - comes to nothing. That's nonsensical, just kicking possession away.
    • 34' Micah Richards begins getting in to the attack on the right flank, giving Wright-Phillips more freedom... which the winger uses to hack down an opposition player. He's lucky to avoid going in the book.
    • 32' Robinho makes a run down the left to get on the end of a Stephen Ireland through-ball - but he's a yard off-side.
    • 30' Aalborg are enjoying more of the ball now as the midfield battle tightens up - it's 50 per cent each so far now. You still feel the hosts will need to do more if they want to get back in to the tie.
    • 28' Nice-looking move for City ends when Robinho opts to dive when he could have stayed on his feet easily and been in a good position.
    • 26' First chance for Aalborg, as Due crosses a great ball in from the left for Shelton - but Onuoha makes a terrific clearing slide. From the corner a cruel deflection looks dangerous as Given is stranded, but the ball spins wide of the left post.
    • 24' City keep on dominating possession here: Stephen Ireland makes a run through the centre now, then holds up the ball and releases a pass to the flying Robinho - but the Brazilian sees the ball cut out by a defender.
    • 22' This is an extraordinary pattern for a game to take considering the aggregate scoreline: the hosts seem content to take things slowly and hit on the occasional break. City - with a two-goal cushion - are the side making the running.
    • 20' Aalborg build their first attacking moves of the match, but the only ball which gets in to the box is a cross from Bogelund that dribbles straight in to the arms of Shay Given.
    • 18' City hold the ball well and create good pressure - they are in a different class to their opponents on the evidence so far tonight.
    • 17' Stephen Ireland has a long pop from range, but balloons it so high you'd think the ball was filled with helium.
    • 16' Good chance for City as Bridge puts in a ball along the ground from the left. It's cut back behind defence and attack alike, but though Ched Evans gets to the ball he can't turn and shoot.
    • 14' Major blunder by Aalborg defender Nielsen - who misses a simple clearing header completely - nearly gifts a chance to Evans, but the keeper steps in to clear.
    • 12' The set-piece is well-defended by the home side. They try to break, but it's aimless long ball stuff.
    • 11' Robinho on the left has been quiet so far compared to Wright-Phillips, but he comes in to things with a good run up the left. His shot is blocked and it's a corner.
    • 8' The game is still slowed right down, but City look in control as things stand. They certainly have a great chance of winning this tournament - holders Zenit have been knocked out this evening by Udinese, so it's wide open as things stand.
    • 6' Aalborg slow the pace of the game down a little - they're already on the back foot as things stand, and the crowd's singing is noticeably quieter than it was five minutes ago...
    • 4' Wright-Phillips comes up again and wins a free kick - he's been in superb form of late and it shows no sign of stopping. The free kick leads to a corner, but it's cleared well by the hosts.
    • 2' First attacking move of the match sees Wright-Phillips marauding up the right and putting in a ball that gives Stephen Ireland an early chance at a volley. It's blocked by the defence, but it's a great start by City.
    • 1' We're under way in Denmark, and the crowd are in fine voice already. With a 2-0 lead under their belts this City side should cruise through this test... shoudln't they?

  14. I am a Lebanese fan of Man City since 1992, and i have waited long to see a strong squad. Finally, the team is building one, however, winning in such a way against Aalborg is a shame because a 2-0 at home should secure the result away without putting much pressure on poor Shay Given. The menatlity of the team should change, costing 120 minutes plus penalty kicks against Aalborg is somewaht shaky for the team's fate in the UEFA cup. The team needs a boost, qualifying was important, however, it should have been easier. A lesson to learn in the future. Come on Guys
