    • 90+3' All over here! Pretty forgettable stuff.
    • 90+3' Into injury time now. Defoe smashes over from distance.
    • 89' Mesbah comes on for Yebba for Algeria.
    • 88' Lampard rattles an effort well wide from 25 yards. Kind of sums the night up.
    • 87' Three minutes left here and Algeria in possession.
    • 86' Defoe heads behind for a goal kick.
    • 85' Lacen booked for Algeria and England have a corner. Lampard to take.
    • 84' Crouch for Barry in the last five minutes.
    • 83' Johnson free-kick misses everybody before flying behind the goal.
    • 82' England have one more change to make. Will Capello gamble with another striker?
    • 81' Ziani departs for Adlene Guedioura. Looked like a bit of cramp.
    • 80' Into the final 10 minutes. Wright-Phillips tries to pick out Gerrard, but the ball has too much pace on it. Going to be a change for Algeria.
    • 79' Abdoun is deemed offside as he tries to trouble the England defence.
    • 78' Both side have had 11 shots each at goal.
    • 77' Johnston tosses the ball in for Defoe, but Halliche knocks it away. Algeria having to do a bit of defending, but England not really creating too much space.
    • 76' Defoe wins a corner. The ball breaks to Barry on the edge of the box. Claims for a penalty from his shot, but that was straight at Halliche.
    • 75' England continue to huff and puff. Defoe almost found space in the box, but Bougherra came to Algeria's rescue.
    • 74' Djamel Abdoun replaces Boulebouz for Algeria. Jermain Defoe comes on for Heskey.
    • 73' Rooney gets a shot in from distance. Going to be a couple of changes.
    • 72' Sums up the mood of most people, it would be fair to say.
    • 71' A few comments: Martin - 'I'm off to do the washing up, I really think it will be more exciting......' Adam - 'going to be another draw for 'golden team' of england..'
    • 70' Barry's corner floats towards Gerrard, but his header is collected by M'Bohli on his line. Better bit of play by England.
    • 69' Coming up for 20 minutes to play. Heskey tries to supply Rooney in the box, but the ball is delfected over.
    • 68' The only African team to score against England at the World Cup was Cameroon who lost 3-2 in the quarter finals in 1990.
    • 67' A quarter of the game to go. Has been pretty uninspiring stuff. England just shading possession 53 to 47, but doing very little constructive when they have the ball in forward areas.
    • 66' Belhadj fouls Wright-Phillips. Barry going to take this one, but another mediocre delivery gives Algeria possession.
    • 65' Two-and-a-half hours since England scored a goal. That Gerrard opener against the US seems like a lifetime ago.
    • 64' Matmour chased John Terry's short backpass, but James ran out to thump clear. Poor play by the Chelsea man.
    • 63' Shaun Wright-Phillips replaces Lennon. Winger for winger.
    • 62' Cole's cross into the box is headed behind by Halliche with Rooney lurking. Better by England. They have a corner, but Barry can't find a teammate.
    • 61' Gerrard's cross is easily held by M'Bolhi. Nobody challenging in the area.
    • 60' England win a corner. Gerrard will take it.
    • 59' Still no sign of a change by England or Algeria for that matter.
    • 58' Yahia screws the free-kick wide from 20 yards.
    • 57' England try to break out through Gerrard, but the ball is quickly returned. Carragher booked for a late one on Yebda. He will miss the game against Slovenia.
    • 56' Algeria press forward. Belhadj cross nodded behind for a corner by Cole.
    • 55' Gerrard suddenly free in the box after loose play by Ziani, but he can't pick out a teammate. Was a great chance for England.
    • 54' All very lethargic. The 4-4-2 formation looks slow and ponderous.
    • 53' Bit of info: England's starting line-up is 29 years and 322 days old on average. Their oldest line-up in 56 years at the World Cup. They look it at the moment.
    • 52' Heskey wins some space down the Algerian left, but he produces a woeful cross. That ball flies out on the full. Horrid bit of play.
    • 51' Capello is out the touchline. The England manager is looking fairly animated.
    • 50' This time Johnson deals with Yebda's woeful effort from the free-kick. No real danger to England.
    • 49' Johnson makes a timely tackle on Yebda, but Terry is penalised for a foul on Matmour. Gerrard tried to create for England at the other end, but Algeria have another free-kick.
    • 48' Yahia's effort is charged down by the wall. Looked a bit far out to try a shot. England survive that little raid forward by Algeria.
    • 47' Has to be better surely than what was a pretty lamentable effort in those first 45 minutes. Terry fouls Matmour around 35 yards from goal.
    • 46' England begin the second half.
    • 45+1' One minute added, but there goes the half-time whistle. It has been a disappointing effort by England. Not really good enough to win this game, never mind a World Cup.
    • 44' A minutes until the break. England have lacked movement and have had only one real chance which Lampard failed to snap up.
    • 43' 16 members of Algeria’s squad are born in France. Only France have more French-born players in their 2010 World Cup squad (20). They have proved they are no mugs in this first period.
    • 42' Johnson picks out Rooney. He hammers in a shot from 25-yard range, but that is a good take by M'Bohli down to his left.
    • 41' Four minutes until the break. This would be a great time to score. Another English move breaks down and Algeria have a goal kick.
    • 40' Harry and William enjoying the action in Cape Town. World Cup image
    • 39' Rooney push on Kadir when he thought he had won a corner.
    • 38' Lennon on a nice run. Picks out Barry. Tries his luck with his left foot from 20 yards, but straight to the Algeria keeper.
    • 37' Lampard tried to pick out Lennon, but Algeria holding firm. Gerrard thrashes in a volley from the edge of the box, but that is well over. Disappointing end to that move.
    • 36' Prince William and Prince Harry watching in the stands. Has not been a regal performance by the Three Lions so far.
    • 35' Ziani unloads a shot from 25 yards. That whizzes wide of James' right hand post, but England can't afford to give cheap possession away in dangerous areas. That was a warning.
    • 34' A bit of a better spell by England. They have had four shots on goal to Algeria's seven.
    • 33' That was England's best chance. Fine play by Lennon to trouble the left side of that Algerian defence.
    • 32' Lampard has a golden chance. The ball breaks to the midfielder in the box, but his shot from 15 yards is claimed by M'Bohli diving low to his left.
    • 31' Belhadj scampers down the left flank, but his cross can only pick out the gloves of James.
    • 30' The first half hour has hardly been vintage England. Here come Algeria.
    • 29' Gerrard and Rooney link up, but the Liverpool skipper's shot is easily held by M'Bohli from 25 yards.
    • 28' Some more superb play by Bougherra down the right flank. Probing cross, but Barry gets his header on that. That is a couple of key clearances by the Manchester City and former Aston Villa midfielder.
    • 27' Algeria playing a dangerous game at the back. Bougherra did well to deny Rooney space in the box.
    • 26' A twitter comment for you: Rio Ferdinand - 'Come on England...a wins a win boys it don't matter how in a tournament just get our points on the board' .
    • 25' All a bit predictable by England. Too slow in attack.
    • 24' Algeria suddenly enjoying more possession. 53% to 47%. England struggling to make any real impact upon the African side.
    • 23' Good take by James from Belhadj's corner. That should help to settle any nerves.
    • 22' Bougherra swings a ball in for Yebda, but Barry denies him space. Great block. Had to make that.
    • 21' Algerian not lacking any purpose. Couple of shots by Boudebouz that England players manage to throw themselves in front of. Not the best start to this match by England.
    • 20' Rooney tries a shot from the edge of that box, but that is charged down by green shirts. Back with the keeper M'Bohli.
    • 19' Carragher makes a timely tackle on Matmour, buit Algeria continue to press. Ziani's cross headed goalwards by Yebda, but an easy take for James.
    • 18' The England fans are trying to inspire their team. World Cup image
    • 17' Ziani's cross almost deflected past James by Carragher. A touch there could have taken that past the England keeper.
    • 16' Gerrard responds with a poor shot from distance that flies miles high. No real chances so far.
    • 15' Boudebouz tries his luck from 30 yards, but wallops it well wide.
    • 14' England are nnbeaten in their last eight World Cup group matches (four wins, four draws), since a 2-1 defeat to Romania in 1998.
    • 13' Very even so far in terms of possession. England 52% to Algeria's 48%.
    • 12' Rooney wins a corner. Barry floats it in for Heskey, who heads over but is penalised for fouling Bougherra.
    • 11' Bougherra's high cross tests James. He punches it away. Not the most convicing of fists there, but he did enough.
    • 10' Algeria have lost five of their past six matches. Hardly form to frighten England, but the underdogs look useful on the break.
    • 9' Yebda takes a sore one, but he is back up.
    • 8' Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard will be suspended if booked tonight so they have to watch what they are doing.
    • 7' Algeria back on the attack. Ziani takes the free-kick, but that is an awful attempt. England whack it clear.
    • 6' Fine tackle by Bougherra on Cole as the England defender tried to burst into the Algerian box.
    • 5' Nice break forward by Algeria involving Boudebouz and Matmour, but comes to nothing.
    • 4' Gerrard pumps a hopeful ball into the box, but goalkeeper M'Bohli just holds that. Almost made a mess of that.
    • 3' Long ball by Algerian captain Yahia, but that finds nobody. England charge up the other end. Gerrard swings a free-kick in, but Bougherra heads that out.
    • 2' David James takes an early goal kick. Rolls it out to Jamie Carragher. Gareth Barry also getting an early touch. Playing their way into this crucial match.
    • 1' Algeria get us underway in Cape Town.
    • 19:26 The teams are out and singing their national anthems.
    • 19:25 David Beckham waits anxiously to see if England can get their bid for World Cup glory up and running tonight. World Cup image
    • 19:20 Rabah Saadane has been the Algerian coach since 2007. This is his fifth time in this position. He also was in charge at the 1986 World Cup when they finished bottom of the group with one draw and two defeats behind Brazil, Spain and Northern Ireland.
    • 19:15 Coach Fabio Capello celebrates his 64th birthday today. He is the only manager at this World Cup to have a birthday during the finals.
    • 19:10 England’s only previous World Cup match on June 18 came 24 years ago. They won 3-0 against Paraguay in the first knockout round in 1986 with goals from Gary Lineker (2) and Peter Beardsley.
    • 19:05 Algeria have lost all three matches against European opposition in 2010, without scoring a goal – 3-0 to Serbia (March 3), 3-0 to Republic of Ireland (May 28) and 1-0 to Slovenia (June 13).
    • 19:00 Wayne Rooney has failed to score in his last six matches for England. This is his longest run without a goal in four years since a personal record seven-match scoreless run in 2006, which included all three appearances at the 2006 World Cup.
    • 18:55 England have won their second group stage match in each of the last two World Cups – 1-0 against Argentina in 2002 and 2-0 against Trinidad & Tobago in 2006. Their only defeat in their last six matches at this stage was 2-1 to Romania in 1998.
    • 18:50 This will be the first meeting between England and Algeria. England have never lost against an African team. They have a record of 11 wins and four draws.
    • 18:45 The referee is Ravshan Irmatov of Uzbekistan.
    • 18:40 Algeria coach Rabah Saadane brings in Rais Ouheb Mbouli after Faouzi Chaouchi's similar mistake gifted Slovenia a 1-0 win in their first game. The only other change is the introduction of Ryad Boudebouz for Rafik Djebbour up front. Abdelkader Ghezzal is unavailable through suspension after his red card after coming off the bench in the opener.
    • 18:35 England and Algeria both made goalkeeping changes for Friday's World Cup Group C game following costly blunders in their opening matches. Fabio Capello replaces Robert Green with the experienced David James after Green allowed a tame Clint Dempsey shot to squeeze past him in England's 1-1 draw with the US. With Ledley King injured, Jamie Carragher starts in central defence alongside former captain John Terry. Glen Johnson is in at right back.
    • 18:30 Teams: England: 1-David James; 2-Glen Johnson, 18-Jamie Carragher, 6-John Terry, 3-Ashley Cole; 7-Aaron Lennn, 4-Steven Gerrard, 8-Frank Lampard, 14-Gareth Barry; 21-Emile Heskey, 10-Wayne Rooney. Algeria: 23-Rais Ouheb Mbouli; 2-Majid Bougherra, 5-Rafik Halliche, 4-Antar Yahia, 3-Nader Belhadj, 13-Karim Matmour, 19-Hassan Yebda, 8-Medhi Lacen, 15-Karim Ziani, 7-Ryad Boudebouz, 21-Fouad Kadir.
    • 18:25 Good evening and welcome to tonight's coverage as England chase their first win of the tournament against Algeria. England drew 1-1 with the USA in their first match of the finals. Algeria are trying to recover after losing 1-0 to Slovenia. They can't afford a second loss.
  • Summary

    • 70' Barry's corner floats towards Gerrard, but his header is collected by M'Bohli on his line. Better bit of play by England.
    • 62' Cole's cross into the box is headed behind by Halliche with Rooney lurking. Better by England. They have a corner, but Barry can't find a teammate.
    • 55' Gerrard suddenly free in the box after loose play by Ziani, but he can't pick out a teammate. Was a great chance for England.

  2. Fabio - what are you doing - Lennon nfor Wright Philips - they do the same job!
Taking off Heskey - is was the only one that playered like E£ngland meant somethign to him
Rooney - waste of time - should have put Defoe on for him not take of Heskey
This game (and similarly France and Italy) shows that playerts that get £100k per week playing for their club don't give a s**t about playing for their country. No passion, no desire. Of the teams in the world cup there are only aboput 2 England stand a chance of beating! Hondurus, Austraila. They are a joke.
Get some Cham pionship players in, at least they would be interested. PS keep Heskey.

  5. rblackhurst2004 - yes i'm a villa supporter, but I am an even bigger supporter of clubs giving their local lads a chance of playing and maintaing the english footballing tradition. There teams like Everton, West Ham, etc. that have been breeding good'ol local english footballers - against the trend of foreigners.

Vasell 'died' after he left villa for Man C. That;s what a screwy team full of foreigners will do to the english.

Anyway, back to the issue - what happened to THAT tradition of producing players like Gascoigne, beardsley, platt, spink, etc., the option of having 3-5 players competing for 1 position in the national team. i remember the 1990's, when england had Tony Adams, Martin Keown, Steve Bould, Gary Pallister, Mark Wright, John Scales, Neil Ruddock etc., all vying for 2 center back position. I'm only using the CB as an example.

Now, you have players whose head are so big, because of the influx of foreigners that they know the position belongs to them and them alone in the national team. It used to be so much simpler back then. Look at John Terry, Ashley Cole, Lampard, Gerrard and even Rooney for that matter. Due to the foreign influx, there isn't anybody capable of challenging nor replacing them in the national team and they get SO OVER CONFIDENT that they fail to perform. Fact - ENGLAND 1 - USA 1. ENGLAND 0 - ALGERIA 0. Its a bloody joke.

So I am pissed that Capello refuses to call up players outside the big four teams to challenge these 'established' players for their national positions, resulting in them being over-confident and thus not performing as they should.

  9. Disappointed in England but at least we are still unbeaten
Probably the worst World Cup in living memory.
The only way to improve things is to impose a quota on overseas players as the best players in England are foreign.
Too much has been made about the ball I like Robert Green a very good goalkeeper but he and other goalkeepers must take the impact of shots (along the ground) on their bodies not much you can do when the ball is in the air.
Then again we all make mistakes not a lot to choose between Green, James and Harte although Harte is one for the future.

That's what England get for not calling up Ashley Young, Agbonlahor and Stewart Downing. It's retribution to Capello and the England team for not considering these 3 players who could and would have helped England in so many ways.

Too bad and good riddance to England, Remember - its YOUR retibution for not calling up these 3 players that you stink now - 2 draws against teams which should be an easy walkover.
