    • 57' Vidal pulls back to Sanchez who nicks the ball away from Palacios and goes over his outstretched leg on the edge of the penalty area but no free-kick.
    • 56' Olango: "Chile could just be the surprise team of the tournament. The World Cup needs to break away from Brazil, Italy, Germany and Argentina."

    • 43' Chile have had 63% of the possession.
    • 42' Valdivia finds Beausejour down the left and squares but the ball is cut out.
    • 41' The goal was always likely as Honduras have conceded one goal in each of their three previous World Cup matches.
    • 40' Honduras break but Nunez leans back on his 25-yard shot and it is high, wide and not very handsome.
    • 39' This Chile side are very pleasing on the eye and one of the most impressive attacking units we've seen in this tournament.
    • 38' Lovely back heel from Valdivia intended for Sanchez and only a vital sliding tackle from Osman Chavez prevents Sanchez from a sight of goal.

    • 18' Waldo Ponce dives in and that gives Carlos Pavon space 25 yards out but his shot is scuffed wide of the post.
    • 17' Fernandez with the corner but two Chile players collide and they can't get a header on goal.
    • 16' A second corner for Chile.
    • 15' Honduras break but the cross from Roger Espinoza, from the left, is too deep.
    • 14' A rhythmic use of the vuvuzela today!
    • 13' A great move from Chile but Valdivia over hits his pass to Beausejour and a great chance to carve open the Honduras defence is spurned.
    • 12' Honduras won the last encounter 2-0 in a friendly match played in Fort Lauderdale in the USA. Carlos Alberto Pavón and Amado Guevara, who start today, scored the goals.
    • 11' The two teams have met five times with Honduras winning twice and Chile collecting three wins. All these matches were friendlies, the first match played in 1997 and the last one in 2009.
    • 10' Viciously swerving shot from all of 35 yards from Vidal is handled by Honduras keeper Noel Valladares at the second attempt.

    • 6' Yellow card for Carlos Carmona for a cynical late, late trip on Edgard Alvarez.
    • 5' Lively start from Chile who win the first corner of the match.
    • 4' A splendid 30-yard curling free-kick from Matias Fernandez and it is just a whisker over the crossbar. That is one of the better set-piece efforts we have seen.
    • 3' Jorge Valdivia is fouled by Wilson Palacios and that is a free-kick in a dangerous area.
    • 2' A long ball over the top intended for Honduras' Juan Beausejour runs out of play.
    • 1' We are underway for the first game in Nelspruit, a city of 220,000 people and the capital of the Mpumalanga province (formerly Eastern Transvaal) which lies about 60 miles west of the Mozambique border.
    • 12:25 Today's referee is Eddy Maillet from that footballing hotbed, the Seychelles.
    • 12:20 Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda left his injured striker David Suazo on the bench and put Roger Espinoza up front with Carlos Pavon. Ramon Nunez comes into midfield.
    • 12:15 Valdivia and Fernandez usually play the same role, just behind the strikers. They have only featured together five times in the Bielsa era and Chile have lost all five matches.
    • 12:10 Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa sprung a major surprise in his team selection by fielding both his creative playmakers -- Matias Fernandez and Jorge Valdivia. With his leading striker Humberto Suazo still not match fit after injury, Bielsa was expected to play Esteban Paredes up front but instead opted to leave both strikers on the bench.
    • 12:05 Since then, they have not won a single game in 13 matches over four more World Cups. But Chile defender Gonzalo Jara said minds were not focused on history. "Getting the three points and playing like we want to play that's the important thing," he said.
    • 12:00 Chile are playing on the 48th anniversary of their last World Cup victory when they beat Yugoslavia in the third-place playoff while hosting the 1962 tournament.
    • 11:55 This is the Central American country's fourth World Cup match after their debut in 1982 where they went out in the group stages.
    • 11:50 A fourth Palacios brother, Edwin, was kidnapped in 2007 and found dead last year.
    • 11:45 Palacios III joins the team after midfielder Julio Cesar de Leon was ruled out after a thigh injury. De Leon has 77 caps and is known as "Rambo" after the tough-as-nails Sylvester Stallone movie character.
    • 11:40 Honduras called up a third Palacios brother to its World Cup squad with Jerry joining Wilson and Johnny this morning but he is not in the starting XI.
    • 11:35 Honduras: 18-Noel Valladares; 2-Osman Chavez, 3-Maynor Figueroa, 7-Ramon Nunez, 21-Emilio Izaguirre, 8-Wilson Palacios, 20-Amado Guevara, 23-Sergio Mendoza, 13-Roger Espinoza, 17-Edgard Alvarez, 9-Carlos Pavon. /// Chile: 1-Claudio Bravo; 4-Mauricio Isla, 17-Gary Medel, 3-Waldo Ponce, 8-Arturo Vidal, 6-Carlos Carmona, 20-Rodrigo Millar, 14-Matias Fernandez, 10-Jorge Valdivia, 15-Juan Beausejour, 7-Alexis Sanchez.

  2. chile=best chile show the world very good team

    From yanes.yazan, on Thu 17 Jun 23:44
  3. I was just waiting for this game, I wish Chile scored at least 3 goals. However they showed EVERYONE how's done, they were never mentioned as a key team, nor as favorites, however now they have shown part of their repertoir.
You have to remember few of the key players were not in this game, and also, most of them are just 22, this selection has a lot ahead. Last year Chile became the world champion in sub 20.

I hope now people start t pay attention to the teams outside Europe and their pretty boys.

From Pablo, on Thu 17 Jun 13:25
  4. Brutal Truth 57: I think you will find that it was the Chile fans who were doing all the singing, mate! The Hondurans had nothing whatsoever to sing about. This match was about as one-sided as they come: Chile could have won by three or four goals.

From Barney Rubble, on Thu 17 Jun 7:24
  5. I have to say that Chile look a very decent team, and now that Spain have lost their first match to the Swiss, Chile look to be in the driving seat in the group. It's not a disaster yet for Spain since they should have a comfortable win against Honduras in their next game to set up a cracker of a decider against Chile. On the evidence of Chile's play here, it is a clash that could go either way given Spain's history of choking in major tournaments when they are made favourites to win the whole thing.

  10. Post-match conversation at home: "How d'ya get on today luv?"
"Well I had a real hard day at the vuvuzela."
    "And how was the game?"
    "What game?"
"D'ya want to see the recording then?"
"No luv, I think I've mastered the tune now".
Joking honest. After 2 tramadols and 5 large gins, I don't even notice the telly.

  12. ...When it is night time and while everyone is sleeping, the Honduran team should quitely pack their bags and leave town...they were a disgrace to the game. A 1-2 approach would have made the Chileans sit up, but they were for holding the ball, which they very bad at.

From Tomahawk, on Thu 17 Jun 4:33
  13. Chile is a good team and i knew they will carry the day. Congratulations and all the best as you prepare for your next game.
