    • 16' Golden chance for Giorgio Chiellini. A corner from the right bounces off Cannavaro and into the path of his central defensive partner but his attempted dink into the corner drifts wide from eight yards.

    • 10' Pepe gets clear down the right but can only earn a corner.
    • 9' Paston swats away a free-kick by Claudio Marchisio from the left which eludes all the blue shirts gathered in the penalty area.

    • 7' GOAL NZ!! The All Whites win a free-kick which Simon Elliot pumps deep into the penalty area. The ball comes off the thigh of Fabio Cannavaro with Federico Marchetti glued to his line and Smeltz pokes home from close range.
    • 6' Tony Lochhead knocks the ball against Gianluca Zambrotta and a goal kick.
    • 5' Just as Italy have made a tactical switch so have New Zealand with Shane Smeltz playing behind the front two in a 3-4-1-2 formation.
    • 4' Pepe's corner is deflected away from Fabio Cannavaro by Alberto Gilardino.
    • 3' Young Ipswich defender Tommy Smith is forced to concede a corner.
    • 2' Simone Pepe looks for Vincenzo Iaquinta but the long ball runs through to Mark Paston.
    • 1' And we are underway!
    • 14:55 Today's referee is Carlos Batres from Guatemala who leads out the sides at the Mbombela Stadium.
    • 14:50 Ten players from Italy who played in that match are in the current squad.
    • 14:45 All 13 players from New Zealand who played in that match are in the squad for the 2010 World Cup.
    • 14:40 Alberto Gilardino and Vincenzo Iaquinta scored twice in this match which saw Italy win despite New Zealand taking the lead three times. Shane Smeltz and Chris Killen (2) scored the New Zealand goals.
    • 14:35 Both teams will also remember a friendly last year when Italy only just squeezed past New Zealand 4-3. "We've got nothing to lose," said All Whites' defender Tommy Smith.
    • 14:30 Italy against 78th-ranked New Zealand may have seemed a mismatch when the draw came out. But Italy are short on confidence while All Whites confidence soared with that late goal against Slovakia which earned them a 1-1 draw.
    • 14:25 New Zealand named the same team which drew 1-1 with Slovakia in their first match with midfielder Tim Brown fit enough for a place on the bench after a shoulder problem.
    • 14:20 A change in formation from the 4-2-3-1 which started against Paraguay is likely though, with wideman Simone Pepe playing on the right and Marchisio on the left of a 4-4-2.
    • 14:15 Coach Marcello Lippi resisted the temptation to bring in winger Mauro Camoranesi in place of Claudio Marchisio. Forwards Alberto Gilardino and Vincenzo Iaquinta were retained despite unconvincing recent showings.
    • 14:10 Italy made an enforced change in goal but otherwise keep the same team that drew 1-1 with Paraguay in their opener. Goalkeeper Federico Marchetti replaced Gianluigi Buffon, who could miss the rest of the tournament with a back problem.
    • 14:05 Teams - Italy: 12-Federico Marchetti 19-Gianluca Zambrotta, 5-Fabio Cannavaro, 4-Giorgio Chiellini, 3-Domenico Criscito, 22-Riccardo Montolivo, 6-Daniele De Rossi, 15-Claudio Marchisio, 9-Vincenzo Iaquinta, 7-Simone Pepe, 11-Alberto Gilardino /// New Zealand: 1-Mark Paston; 4-Winston Reid, 6-Ryan Nelsen, 5-Ivan Vicelich, 19-Tommy Smith, 3-Tony Lochhead, 11-Leo Bertos, 7-Simon Elliot, 10-Chris Killen, 14-Rory Fallon, 9-Shane Smeltz.
    • 14:00 Defending champions Italy meet New Zealand in World Cup Group F hoping to register their first victory of the tournament in Nelspruit.

  1. Oh my goodness i cannot believe it! I know Italy can be slow starters in the 1st round (1982) but somehow when i look at Lippis team it seems somehow disjointed! There is no strong togetherness and the finishing skills are poor. Maybe they are nervous?!
They are shooting too much from outside box all the time, no real passing going on thats amounted to real goals! i am disappointed that Lippi has not even tried Quagliarella yet, i get the feeling Quagliarella can be another Toto Schillaci ! Come on Italy, get it together...Forza Azzurri !!

  3. At comment 175: It is because the game in general has become incredibly tactical. It is now a game of setting up Not to Lose, and hoping for a moment of magic, which makes players like Messi or Sneijder or anyone else who can produce that magic stand out even more. Higher stakes = More conservative game. Thanks, Money.

  11. It's sad, sides who only come out to defend, get applauded. Not a big fan of Italy, but New Zealand's 10 men behind ball is a disgrace to football. Whatever happened to beautiful football?

From CommonSense!, on Mon 21 Jun 12:35
  12. I have heard everyone slag off every country no matter who they are, I know people don't like Italy and their methods but its good when they get up and say enough is enough and they reach they final. Since 1970 Italy have been in 3 finals, they were nearly out in 82' and won. They were nearly out in 94' on many occations but lost on penalties and in 2006 everything was against them and they won. Italy are the most successful underdogs because not only does everyone hate them they make their life difficult too but they believe and do well at the end.

From toni, on Mon 21 Jun 10:42
  13. Well done the All Whites. Keep it up. The Italians should be nominated for an osacar

    From m4rr0w, on Mon 21 Jun 10:35
  14. Italy were very cynical in the first half, feigning injury to try and draw sympathy from the referee.

The truth of the matter is that many people don't like the idea that football is becoming increasingly global and that non-traditional sides are puting up a better showing than ever.

To those decrying the All Whites' ability or gameplay, remember: the objective is to beat your opponent, not to play a style of football that is "pretty" or that allows the opposition to look good.

Most of all, the World Cup so far has shown the huge gulf between those countries that have pride in wearing their national jersey and those who see it as just a job. The little teams may not always win, but with their courage and conviction they will never truly lose.

From Paul, on Mon 21 Jun 10:33
  15. WELL PLAYED NEW ZEALAND
Suddenly though it is not too bad to be English again because
Italy the defending champions seem to lack any creativity
    What happened to Del Piero?
I am a great admirer of the Juventus player and I do not believe he has retired (has he?)
Of the teams who have already played two games I believe only Argentina and the Netherlands have two wins
The World Cup is rubbish, however, in the past Italy have been slow starters but it is alarming that in the two games they have played up to now the other team have scored first.

  17. You must not say that New Zealand tied because of luck... It is not just an "embarrassment" for Italy. I mean, New Zealand coulda won the whole match... They had 2 or 3 good chances.

  18. Nikola R, at last.... someone who has actually made a sensible comment.

I've read most of the comments and can not believe how little most of you know about football.

New Zealand should be congratulated for holding Italy to a drew. But the team of 2006 would of torn NZ apart. 4 years is a long time in football and don't be surprised if Italy 2010 get knocked out in the first round. Although since 1970, the Italians have proved to get results when it really matters and are always in the mix. I hope they get through because the world cup need teams like Italy to keep it interesting.

  20. LETS BE HONEST WITH OURSELVES ITALY FANS.THIS TEAM IS THE WORST ITALY TEAM WE HAVE HAD IN LIVING MEMORY.AS A NORM NEW ZEALAND WOULD HAVE BEEN PUT IN THEIR PLACE WITHIN 45 MINS.BUT WELL DONE NEW ZEALAND.YOU DIDNT SHOW UP JUST TO MAKE THE NUMBERS UP.AS FOR US AS AN ITALIAN THE BEST THING WE CAN DO IS DRAW THE NEXT GAME,AND COME HOME,BECAUSE ON THIS SHOWING YOU COULDNT WIN A TEACUP LET ALONE THE WORLD CUP.AND IM AFRAID IT HAS TO BE SAID THAT MARCELLO LIPPI.HAS GOT IT WRONG.TO BRING PAZZINI WITHOUT CASSANO WAS A VERY BIG MISTAKE.LOOK AT GILARDINO HES DONE NOTHING.WE ARE LIKE A LION WITH NO TEETH.I MAKE NO EXCUSES WE WERE AWFUL AND WE GOT WHAT WE DESERVED....NOTHING.
