    • 90+3' FULL-TIME! The Netherlands open their World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over Denmark in the Group E clash at Soccer City.
    • 90+1' In two of the previous eight appearances they reached the final. In 1974, they lost 2-1 to hosts West Germany and in 1978 they lost 3-1 to hosts Argentina after extra time. Can the Dutch make it three?
    • 90' Rommedahl screws his shot wide.
    • 89' An incredible acrobatic clearance from Simon Poulsen denies the Dutch a third. Afellay's volley from close range looked destined for the net.
    • 88' Demy De Zeeuw replaces De Jong.
    • 87' Matt Cross: "Apart from Bendtner they have no quality in the final 3rd of the pitch when it matters. they cant break teams down."
    • 86' GOAL NETHERLANDS! Victory is secured as Sneijder unlocks the Danish defender, Elia sees his shot tipped onto the post by Sorensen but DIRK KUYT is on hand to tap home as Kjaer fails to follow-up the rebound.
    • 85' Afellay lets fly from distance but the shooting has been woeful today. Well wide.
    • 84' Sneijder cuts inside and his curling left-footed effort loops off Agger and comes off the top of the crossbar.
    • 83' De Jong goes down with cramp.
    • 82' Denmark have created absolutely nothing in the second-half.
    • 81' Match Image Netherlands' players celebrate
    • 80' Over 83 thousand in Soccer City today it has just been announced.
    • 79' Afellay with a dangerous low cross and Kuyt is a whisker away from meeting it in the area.
    • 78' Ibrahim Afellay replaces van Persie.
    • 77' Danish sub Eriksen is only 18 and made his debut in the friendly against Austria in April and Ajax coach Martin Jol believes he has a great future. "His vision is absolutely amazing," Jol said. "He notices everything that's happening around him when he's in possession."
    • 76' Poor marking from the corner as van Persie gets between two defenders but despite being unmarked only manages to head into the floor from eight yards and it goes wide. He has had two excellent chances to seal the points.
    • 75' Elia with a trick and teases a cross into the area - Sorensen punches clear and then pushes van Bommel's near post follow-up around the post.
    • 74' Denmark bring on Christian Eriksen - he is the youngest player to appear at the World Cup. Kahlenberg makes way.
    • 73' The Danes are now playing without a genuine striker and lack a physical presence.
    • 72' Terribly wayward shot from van Bommel from 25 yards.
    • 71' Rommedahl beats van Bronckhorst and gets to the by-line but fails to pick out a team-mate with his cross.
    • 70' Lovely turn from Elia and a turn of pace but a good challenge by Agger on van Persie when the winger squares.
    • 69' Stekelenburg is making his World Cup debut. Of the seven previous Dutch goalkeepers, only Jan Jongbloed and Edwin van der Sar kept a clean sheet in their World Cup debut match.
    • 68' A hefty deflection on Agger's long-range shot makes it an easy save for Stekelenburg.
    • 67' Elia replaces van der Vaart.
    • 66' Match Image Poulsen watches the ball go into his team's goal.
    • 65' The goal was the 100th in matches between these countries, the Dutch have scored 58 of those.
    • 64' Long free-kick into the box from Agger but Kjaer is well marshalled by van Persie.
    • 63' All yellow cards in the group stage or last 16 are wiped clean before the quarter-finals.
    • 62' Kjaer booked for a foul on Sneijder but hard to see what he did wrong.
    • 61' Bendtner replaced by Mikkel Beckmann.
    • 60' Mark van Bommel over the top to van Persie who shoots into the net after being flagged offside. The referee has a word with the striker, who has already been booked, with the Arsenal star blaming the vuvuzela for not hearing the whistle.
    • 59' InfostradaLive: "The Dutch team has 602 caps between them, a new Dutch record in a World Cup match."
    • 58' Akoto: "Netherlands a far better and they will win 3 goals to 1"
    • 57' Van Persie's cross is flicked towards goal by van der Vaart on the volley and that forces Sorensen into an acrobatic save. A little extra for the cameras from the Stoke keeper.
    • 56' A long throw is flicked on by Kjaer but no Dane to latch onto the touch in the penalty area.
    • 55' Enevoldsen is replaced by Gronkjaer who has mixed brilliant performances with periods of almost total anonymity throughout his career.
    • 54' A nasty challenge by Van Der Wiel on Simon Poulsen goes unpunished. That was as bad as de Jong's earlier - a real ankle breaker.
    • 53' Former Chelsea winger Jesper Gronkjaer is warming up.
    • 52' Van Persie should really make it 2-0. Kjaer gives the ball away carelessly and the Arsenal striker is clear on goal but a heavy first touch allows Sorensen to slide out and claim.
    • 51' Poulsen looks to make amends with a run down the left but it runs out of play.
    • 50' The second Dutch booking. In their last World Cup when the Netherlands lost 1-0 to Portugal the game saw 16 yellow cards, four of which resulted in a red card.
    • 49' Van Persie booked for a late tackle on Kjaer - not much in it really.
    • 48' Poulsen, who plays his club football for AZ, is awarded with the own goal. The ball skidded off his forehead and went in completely the other direction to what he intended. He could only muster a rueful smile.
    • 47' GOAL!! The Netherlands are gifted the lead. A long diagonal run from van Persie whose cross from the left is headed, under no real pressure, by Simon Poulsen into the back of Agger and it nestles in the net.
    • 46' And we are underway at the start of the second-half with no changes to either side.

    • 45+1' Bendtner can't make clean contact with his header and that's half-time. 0-0 at the break.
    • 45' Rommedahl cuts between two defenders and the shot is deflected behind for a corner.
    • 44' Yellow card for de Jong after hacking down Bendtner.
    • 43' Van Persie looks to work the ball onto his left foot, but after eschewing the chance to shoot first time with his weaker foot, he checks back onto his right but fires into the side netting.
    • 42' Kuyt with a burst down the right flank but he fouls his club team-mate Agger at the by-line.
    • 41' InfostradaLive: "The average age of the Netherlands team today is 28 years and 99 days, their oldest at a World Cup since 1990."
    • 40' This Dutch side lacking an injection of pace, maybe we will see Eljero Elia or Ryan Babel after the break.
    • 39' A well worked short corner but headed clear and the Dutch break only for Simon Poulsen to see off Sneijder.
    • 38' Denmark starting to look dangerous and a neat reverse ball from Bendtner releases Kahlenberg who goes for the near post and sees his shot turned behind by Stekelenburg.
    • 37' Match Image Gregory van der Wiel fights for the ball with Denmark's Simon Poulsen.
    • 36' Another free-kick attempt from 35 yards and once more it hits the ball - this time Kjaer with the effort.
    • 35' The Danes break and Rommedahl stings Stekelenburg's palms with a fizzing diagonal drive.
    • 34' Decent cross from Kuyt and a last ditch sliding interception could have gone anywhere but it's just another corner.
    • 33' Van Persie can't get away from Kjaer on the left-hand side of the penalty area but a Dutch corner.
    • 32' Another long, long free-kick attempt by Sneijder which is straight into the wall and he would have been better served with a cross.
    • 31' Rafascrackingup: "Denmark will go for 0-0 but I think the Dutch will win it by 2-0, Van Persie and Van der Vaart."
    • 30' A two footed challenge from de Jong and he is lucky to get away with that. Tim Cahill was sent-off for less last night.
    • 29' Bendtner had dragged three defenders away and could have nodded square to Christian Poulsen.
    • 28' Of course both centre forwards today are Gunners.
    • 27' Raking pass from Agger to Rommedahl and he picks out Bendtner but the Arsenal striker can only put his header wide from eight yards. Probably the clearest chance we've had so far.
    • 26' Bronckhorst becomes the fourth Dutchman to reach 100 caps today after Edwin Van der Sar (130), Frank De Boer (112) and Phillip Cocu (101).
    • 25' Van der Vaart over the top for van Bronckhorst but Dennis Rommedahl tracks back and the captain's final cross is harmlessly out of play.
    • 24' Netherlands are unbeaten in their last 19 matches in all competitions, a new record Dutch record - breaking their record of 17 set between 2001 and 2003. This is also the longest current unbeaten run by any country in international football.
    • 23' Match Image Joris Mathijsen fights for the ball with Denmark's Martin Jorgensen
    • 22' A charge forward and a dig from distance by Enevoldsen but no threat to Stekelenburg.
    • 21' Better stuff from the Dutch again, a square ball to van der Vaart whose first touch is bad but he then recovers only to curl over.
    • 20' Crisp passing from the Dutch - a lovely touch from van Persie sucks in Simon Kjaer and he finds van der Vaart whose shot is deflected behind for a corner.
    • 19' Dennis Rommedahl puts his fingers in his ears - deafening noise of the plastic trumpets.
    • 18' Kahlenberg heads away Sneijder's delivery whose follow-up shot is blocked.
    • 17' Kuyt's cross is guided behind by Lars Jacobsen for a corner.
    • 16' The Dutch lacking some width with Robben's replacement Rafael van der Vaart looking to come in field at every opportunity.
    • 15' Maarten Stekelenburg in the Dutch net has had nothing to do in the opening 15 minutes.
    • 14' The Danes are playing a 4-5-1 and putting plenty of men behind the ball.
    • 13' Sneijder finds van Persie in the left channel but Denmark manage to snaffle it back.
    • 12' 'Oranje’'have failed to win their last two World Cup matches. Only once before have they gone three WC matches without a victory – a five-match streak from 1978-1990.
    • 11' The support in the stadium is overwhelmingly for the Dutch.
    • 10' Dirk Kuyt tries his luck from 20 yards but straight at Sorensen.
    • 9' Netherlands are making their ninth World Cup appearance. Of all previous eight appearances, they have always reached the Last 16.
    • 8' Gregory van der Wiel wins the ball in the centre circle and goes on a marauding run forward but an excellent challenge by Christian Poulsen on the edge of the penalty area prevents the full-back feeding Robin van Persie.
    • 7' Thomas Enevoldsen replicates Sneijder by hitting a free-kick from way out - this way sails well wide.
    • 6' Nigel de Jong is tripped which allows Wesley Sneijder a sight of goal but his free-kick from the best part of 40 yards is way over the crossbar.
    • 5' Netherlands are unbeaten in their last seven matches against Denmark. Their last defeat was in October 1967.
    • 4' Space for Thomas Kahlenberg down the right flank but he is unable to get a cross over after finding himself in a promising position.
    • 3' Rampaging run forward from Agger but his long-range effort is charged down by John Heitinga.
    • 2' Nervy start from Daniel Agger, a short backpass forces Thomas Sorensen to hack clear.
    • 1' Clear blue skies and a nice temperature for football of around 19 degrees as we get underway!
    • 12:25 And the teams come out to that oh so tuneful sound of the Vuvuzela.
    • 12:20 Today's referee is France's Stephane Lannoy.
    • 12:15 This will be their first ever World Cup meeting. They have met twice before at European Championships – Denmark winning on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the 1992 Semifinals and the Netherlands winning 3-0 in the 2000 Group Stage.
    • 12:10 Netherlands and Denmark have met 29 times in international football. Netherlands have won 11, Denmark eight and there have been ten draws.
    • 12:05 Denmark coach Morten Olsen will happily settle for a draw: "A draw would be a good result for us," Olsen told the same news conference. "But we have to see how the match develops to discover if that expectation is fair."
    • 12:00 Van Bronckhorst wants the Netherlansd to play stylish but winning football after many of his illustrious Dutch predecessors such as Johan Cruyff ended up without a big international tournament winners' medal. Only Ruud Gullit's 1988 European Championship team have finished as winners on a big stage. "It started in 1974 and we always played beautiful football but only won one prize and we have to change that," Van Bronckhorst told a news conference at the Soccer City stadium on Sunday.
    • 11:55 Giovanni van Bronckhorst will lead out the Netherlands on his 100th international appearance.
    • 11:50 Central striker Robin van Persie will also get support from Dirk Kuyt on the right with the in-form Wesley Sneijder pulling the strings in midfield.
    • 11:45 Rafael van der Vaart comes in for Netherlands on the left wing in place of the injured Arjen Robben, who is recovering from a hamstring injury and only joined the squad two days ago.
    • 11:40 Nicklas Bendtner was surprisingly named to lead Denmark's attack. Coach Morten Olsen had said on Sunday the 22-year-old striker, who was recovering from a groin injury, would not be fit enough to play against the Dutch.
    • 11:35 Teams: Netherlands: 1-Maarten Stekelenburg; 2-Gregory van der Wiel, 3-John Heitinga, 4-Joris Mathijsen, 5-Giovanni van Bronckhorst, 7-Dirk Kuyt, 6-Mark van Bommel, 10-Wesley Sneijder, 8-Nigel de Jong, 23-Rafael van der Vaart, 9-Robin van Persie. /// Denmark: 1-Thomas Sorensen; 4-Daniel Agger, 3-Simon Kjaer, 6-Lars Jacobsen, 15-Simon Poulsen, 10-Martin Jorgensen, 2-Christian Poulsen, 20-Thomas Enevoldsen, 12-Thomas Kahlenberg, 19-Dennis Rommedahl, 11-Nicklas Bendtner.
    • 11:30 The Netherlands open their World Cup campaign against Denmark in Group E at Soccer City.

  5. @brookscasey - England certainly won`t be in the final. Looking at their USA performance it`s the same old overhyped stuff. One can only hope that one day the english will wake up and realise that crowing about "1966" is actually quite embarassing. The only reason they actually get to these events is because they seem to have easy groups. Beaten by Ukraine and a poor performance against USA. hello, wake up call?

Yeah football is coming home but just not to England...

  8. What a shame they could ship the wembley pitch to South Africa to go along with those charming vuvuzelas and the world-class ball. At least that way we'd get a few laughs watching people fall flat on their faces rather than just endless poor crosses and sky-high shots at goal. Poor so far, very poor! EPL, I MISS YOU SO!

  9. How can some people come here and say the Dannish team was a better side. They had 1 good chance on goal and that was a Bendtner header. I agree Holland was not convincing today, however they go a result and they controled the match. I would rather have this then a draw or even worse a loss. 1st game of the WC for them, I expect them to perform better as the tounament progresses.
