    • 26' Another super Milner cross is pushed out by Handanovic with Defoe lurking and Lampard can't hit the target with his follow-up from 18 yards. Way over the top with his left foot and the keeper on the ground.
    • 25' It is currently goalless in Pretoria which means as things stand England will go through as group winners ahead of Slovenia. USA v Algeria: LIVE
    • 24' England’s previous five goals in the World Cup had been scored by midfielders – Gerrard (3), Joe Cole and David Beckham.
    • 23' GOAL ENGLAND!! Milner's superb cross from the right is met by JERMAIN DEFOE who volleys into the roof of the net from close range. Handanovic is beaten for pace as the Tottenham striker nips in ahead of Marko Suler from seven yards.

    • 21' Zlatan Ljubijankic finds himself in space in the penalty area but his shot is blocked by Terry. A crucial intervention.

    • 19' Terry meets Lampard's corner at the near post but his header is glanced wide of the far post.
    • 18' Rooney's shot is deflected behind for a corner. Playing Milner in down the right was surely the better option.
    • 17' This is the worst pitch in the tournament, very soft. Defoe loses out once more.
    • 16' Lampard makes a typical late run from midfield and is inches away from reaching Rooney's through ball.
    • 15' Lampard's long-range strike is on target but well held, diving low to his left by Samir Handanovic. The ball moved in the air.
    • 14' Radosavljevic comes through the back of Rooney and England win a free-kick 35 yards out.
    • 13' Defoe chases a long ball down the left channel, he has barely had a touch so far.
    • 12' If England fail to win today it will be only the second time in 13 World Cup participations that they have failed to win any of their first round group phase matches.
    • 11' Better stuff from England, a long ball by Johnson releases Wayne Rooney down the left. He looks to pick out Gerrard at the back post but the cross is headed clear with the captain lining up a volley.
    • 10' A tackle from behind by Gareth Barry on Aleksandar Radosavljevic and the England midfielder is lucky not to be booked.
    • 9' Vital sliding tackle by Ashley Cole to prevent Miso Brecko from whipping over a cross.
    • 8' The first shot of the game is from Slovenia. Birsa cuts inside off the right flank and his dipping 20-yard effort is well held by David James.
    • 7' John Terry is lucky as he gifts the ball away in his own half but Slovenia can't find the decisive pass.
    • 6' England have drawn their last three World Cup Group matches: 2-2 vs Sweden in 2006, 1-1 vs USA and 0-0 vs Algeria in 2010. Their last World Cup group match win came on 15th of June 2006 against Trinidad and Tobago through late goals by Peter Crouch (83’) and Steven Gerrard (90+1’).
    • 5' Johnson is warned for a lunge on Andraz Kirm.
    • 4' James Milner's cross from the right is comfortably cleared by Bostjan Cesar.
    • 3' Gerrard has started on the left in a traditional 4-4-2, no diamond formation as suggested before the match.
    • 2' Matthew Upson's clearance falls strike to Valter Birsa but Milivoje Novakovic cannot capitalise.
    • 1' We are underway for this must-win encounter for England! A nation expects.
    • 14:58 Thousands of England fans bellow out the anthem. England in all red today as we prepare for kick-off.
    • 14:55 It is a warm day in Port Elizabeth and there are thousands of England fans inside the stadium as referee Wolfgang Stark of Germany leads out the teams.
    • 14:50 Early Boers will be tweeting during the game: http://twitter.com/EarlyBoers
    • 14:45 The country that gave the world the plastic zipper takes on the nation that invented football and few are discounting tiny Slovenia's chances of ending mighty England's World Cup crusade. Slovenia can zip through - Kek
    • 14:40 Read Early Boers' take on the big game. Who are England playing again?
    • 14:35 Fabio Capello looked ahead to World Cup D-day declaring: "I am not crazy. We can reach the final." Capello stands by final claim
    • 14:30 England have taken on Slovenia once before. In September 2009, England beat Slovenia 2-1 in a friendly at Wembley. Frank Lampard opened the score by converting a penalty. Defoe doubled the lead in the second half and Zlatan Ljubijankic netted for Slovenia late on.
    • 14:25 For Slovenia, defender Marko Suler starts after recovering from bruised ribs sustained in the 2-2 draw with the USA. Reserve striker Nejc Pecnik is out of the finals with a broken ankle.
    • 14:20 Group explained - Slovenia progress with a win or a draw. They also progress if they lose to England and USA draw with Algeria. If Algeria beat USA and Slovenia lose, goal difference and goals scored will be decisive. England will progress with a win. If both Group C matches end in a draw, either USA or England progress on most goals scored. If England draw 2-2 and the US draw 0-0, lots will be drawn.
    • 14:15 Defoe has previously started just one competitive game under the Italian - and he lasted only one half of that, against Andorra in September 2008. However, with 11 international goals to his name - and three in qualifying - Defoe is a more obvious threat to Slovenia than Emile Heskey. And it is goals England need in a game they must win to be sure of a place in the last 16.
    • 14:10 So Fabio Capello brings in Jermain Defoe and James Milner with Emile Heskey and Aaron Lennon dropped to the bench. It looks like another 4-4-2 BUT with captain Steven Gerrard as the point of a diamond. Joe Cole on the bench along with the speedy Lennon. Capello had already confirmed Matthew Upson would replace Jamie Carragher in central defence. What do you think of that?
    • 14:05 Teams - England: 1-David James; 2-Glen Johnson, 15-Matthew Upson, 6-John Terry, 3-Ashley Cole; 16-James Milner, 4-Steven Gerrard, 8-Frank Lampard, 14-Gareth Barry; 19-Jermain Defoe, 10-Wayne Rooney. /// Slovenia: 1-Samir Handanovic; 2-Miso Brecko, 4-Marko Suler, 5-Bostjan Cesar, 13-Bojan Jokic; 10-Valter Birsa, 8-Robert Koren, 18-Aleksandar Radosavljevic, 17-Andraz Kirm; 9-Zlatan Ljubijankic, 11-Milivoje Novakovic.
    • 14:00 England MUST BEAT Slovenia to reach the last 16 of the World Cup. Follow all the action from the Group C match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth right here.
  • Summary

    • 90+1' Superb saving tackle by Upson as a flick-on looks like it was about to run through to a Slovenian forward in the penalty area.

  6. American @#$%. I've met your (drugged up) soldiers. You lot get a medal for crossing the road. Man for Man the US army is way behind the Brits, Israelis, French and Swedish armies. Without your kit - you're nothing.

  7. And just one more thing American Patriot (and Garry with two 'r's); I came onto this blog in my naiviety expecting a sensible discussion about football. But, as usual, and more fool me for thinking it would be anything else but, it's full of the useless, ignorant diatribe from people like you (or us, I suppose, since I was suckered into it too). I would have quite happily come on here and discussed football but the first thing I see is ridiculous anti-English sentiments which have nothing todo with football. If, AP, you have lived in all those places you've said, have you learnt nothing from that experience? Garry, whatever nationality you are, desist from embarrasing yourself. And let's put up sensible comments like Ginopizza did. And any comments regarding who did better than whom in WW2 in just an insult to those who actually fought there. And they didn't fight for the likes of us to score points over who has the most tanks! (It was Russia, btw). So AP, can you respond intelligently or will there be another bout of anti Englishness?

  8. Hey American Parrot. You make me laugh. You crow on and on about the military being the world's biggest and bestaaa and yet.... @#$%!...You lost in Vietnam1 Yes you LOST! With all that military hardware and bases etc! hee hee. Er.... Falklands...Der! We won, dude. All you could do at that time is float mines into Nicaraguan harbours or play loud music to corrupt Central American tinpot dictators.

But hey, you're right. I"ve never been anywhere, seen anything so what do I know Iabnd it was ROme, not Italy that ruled much of Europe and the Middle East as Itlay wasn't invented then. And it was for at least 400 years! At least get your insults factualy correct!

American @#$%, you are making a complete fool of yourself. No wonder the USeless of A is the world's most hated country in the world when it's full of lovely people like you. And the fact that you'll reply to this means that I am right. And you're probably obese too. Hey, why not sue me!

  14. To post 827: I agree with you that the game has changed in that money and greed has changed football. However, i do not believe Capello is a weak manager but i believe he has adapted to the style of how the English play and the culture in it. For example would Capello allowed his players to drink beer the night before a game a couple of years back? Apparently it was JT who proposed the idea.

Speaking of JT i think Capello did the right thing of keeping John Terry in the starting line up. Terry put in an inspirational performance and im sure there will be more to come. I think his interview with the media has done more good than harm. I expect the bond of the players have become stronger and what has happened in the past stays in the past...

  17. AS AN ITALIAN I HAVE FOLLOWED FABIO CAPELLOS CARREER FOR MANY YEARS.HOWEVER I FEAR THAT MR CAPELLO HAS BECOME A MAN WITH NO BACKBONE.WHO THE HELL IS JOHN TERRY TO COME IN FRONT OF THE CAMERAS AND START SAYING WHO SHOULD AND SHOULDNT BE PLAYING.MR CAPELLOS PUNISHMENT SHOULD HAVE BEEN QUICK,HE SHOULDVE DROPPED TERRY AS A WARNING TO ALL THE OTHER ENGLAND PLAYERS.MY SUSPICION IS ,IS THAT JOHN TERRY IS STILL HURTING OVER LOSING THE CAPTAINCY OF THE TEAM.AGAIN WE ARE IN A POSITION WHERE THE TAIL WAGS THE DOG.I KNOW WHAT YOUR THINKING COS ITALY HAVENT PLAYED WELL THIS SOUNDS LIKE SOUR GRAPES.NO THIS IS A CASE OF A PLAYER WHO THINKS HES ABOVE HIMSELF.I HAVE VERY LITTLE TIME FOR PLAYERS AS THEY HAVE NO LOYALTY TO ANYONE EXCEPT THE HIGHEST BIDDER.PLAYER POWER IS DANGEROUS LOOK AT FRANCE AND ANELKA, WHAT AN AWFUL MAN.
THESE PLAYERS GET VASTS AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR KICKING A BALL ABOUT WIN.LOSE,OR DRAW.AND THEY THINK THEY STILL HAVE THE RIGHT TO COMPLAIN.WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HONOUR OF PLAYING FOR ONES COUNTRY?
SORRY FOR THIS POST BEING SO LONG.BUT ANYWAY GOOD LUCK ENGLAND HOPE YOU BEAT THE GERMANS.

  19. Garry, you're shouting at me. Did I touch a nerve? Are you in your little pis sy wet country which is the unhealthiest in the world (that's a fact, check it out Jock) and which relies on England to fund it to operate (fact, check it out. Without England Scotland would economically collapse. Scotland only contributes 8.4% GDP to the whole UK (that's as much as Wales and NI combined, btw)); so basically, Garry, - you're from a pathetic little country where it is hard for ANYONE else NOT to look arrogant when compared with it; and what's more you probably live in England because you can't get a job in your own.

p.s. What's WW2 got to do with it? Oh yes, that's the last time Scotland WON anything!
