Live Commentary

  1. - An enthralling qualifying session comes to an end in Bahrain, as Jarno Trulli masters the Sakhir circuit to take pole in an all-Toyota front row. But Britain have Jenson Button in third, and Lewis Hamilton in fifth to cheer come the race tomorrow at 13.00 UK time; rejoin us again then!

  2. - The Toyota team are delirious as they block-out the front row, with Britain's Jenson Button in third, Vettel in fourth, Lewis Hamilton in fifth, followed by Barrichello, Alonso, Massa, Rosberg, and finally Raikkonen.

  3. 0' It will be an all-Toyota front row, with Jarno Trulli snatching pole position from his team-mate Glock, with a time of 1:33.431!

  4. 0' But Timo Glock races through with searing speed to pip Button with a 1:33.712. Vettel also leaps above Button into second.

  5. 0' Hamilton takes second from Button as a potential British one-two is on the cards.

  6. 0' Button is looking in ominous form as he emerges onto the home straight, and yes! Button takes top spot with a 1:34.044!

  7. 1' We're right at the business end of Q3 right now, as Button, followed immediately by Hamilton, goes fastest on the first sector.

  8. 2' So Trulli's 1:34.297 is the time to beat for the other nine drivers, as Button crosses the line to begin his timed lap.

  9. 3' Alonso moves sixth under the radar, pushing Hamilton, Massa, Raikkonen and Rosberg down the order.

  10. 4' The two Toyota cars lead as the drivers head back into the pits to load back up for the final tilt in this qualifying session.

  11. 5' Sebastian Vettel moves into fourth, while Rubens Barrichello drifts wide at the final corner but salvages fifth.

  12. 6' But Glock is overhauled by Jarno Trulli, his Toyota team mate, who sets a 1:32.297. Jenson Button goes third, while Lewis Hamilton takes fourth.

  13. 7' With race fuel added, the times will be slower now of course, with Glock recording a 1:34.366.

  14. 8' Glock looks to be the early pace-setter, with all ten cars out.

  15. 9' Timo Glock is straight out in his Toyota, followed by Nico Rosberg in his Williams.

  16. 10' Q3 is now underway, as the drivers eliminated from the previous session trudge away from their respective garages.

  17. - Heikki Kovalainen finishes 11th, followed by Nakajima, Kubica, Heidfeld and Piquet back in 15th as we wrap up Q2.

  18. - Rosberg nips into tenth, with Vettel taking top spot in Q2, followed by Glock and Raikkonen in third; Barrichello is in fourth, with Button followed by Alonso, Hamilton, Trulli, Massa and Rosberg.

  19. 0' Button takes fourth, while Hamilton can only muster a sixth-placed finish. Timo Glock moves into second for Toyota, with Vettel remaining in first.

  20. 1' Massa goes fifth with his lap, with Rubens Barrichello taking third.

  21. 2' Button is flying in his Brawn, with Hamilton looking to hit the mark behind Massa.

  22. 3 Kovalainen's lap takes him into eighth position, with Massa on a hot lap, along with Barrichello.

  23. - Kovalainen sets a good first sector time as he replicates Kubica's start; the slowest five so far are Piquet, Hamilton, Kubica, Massa, and Heidfeld.

  24. 4' Robert Kubica squandered that early promise, finishing 13th fastest after that lap, with Heidfeld a place back. Button is braced for a final push, along with compatriot Hamilton.

  25. 5' Robert Kubica takes the fastest time on the first sector, with five minutes remaining, but can he sustain this?

  26. 6' Alonso, who has been quiet in qualifying so far with the exception of the 'Mark Webber incident', takes third spot pushing down Trulli and Glock.

  27. 7' Now Vettel edges in front with a 1:32.474 to push Raikkonen down to second - Glock is looking to be on another flyer.

  28. 8' Raikkonen now takes the fastest lap with a 1:32.827 after Trulli and Glock had positioned themselves as the top two.

  29. 9' Barrichello goes into top spot, before being pipped by Brawn team-mate Button on his first lap.

  30. 10' Massa, Raikkonen, Glock, Trulli and Button head out now.

  31. 11' Rubens Barrichello has a poor turn 10 as he drifts wide sloppily.

  32. 12' Martin Whitmarsh of MacLaren looks on studiously as Kovalainen sets a 1:33.273.

  33. 13' Kovalainen and Hamilton are straight out in the MacLarens as the Brit in particular, looks to cement his place in the top five again.

  34. 14' The big question mark remains over Brawn, and how their cars fare in terms of speed in Bahrain: Button and Barrichello have a lot to do.

  35. 15' We're underway in Q2, with a 15-minute session set to narrow the field down to 10 drivers.

  36. - From 11th to 15th lie Buemi, Kubica, Sutil, Vettel and Webber, who bemoans the fact that 'my race is screwed!'

  37. - So at the conclusion of Q1, Jarno Trulli leads Toyota team-mate Timo Glock, followed by Hamilton and Kovalainen in the MacLaren's; Massa and Raikkonen in the Ferrari's; then Piquet, Rosberg, Heidfeld and Nakajima in 10th.

  38. 0' Webber believes he was blocked by Alonso as he moves dispondently into the pits.

  39. 0' Alonso moves up into 13th, with Nakajima in eighth; Massa takes ninth, with Webber down in 19th.

  40. 0' Sebastian Vettel nips in ahead of Trulli with a 1:32.680, while Hamilton consolidates third.

  41. 0' Button looks set to go fastest, with Hamilton also flying, but Trulli still holds top spot.

  42. 1' Vettel now goes second behind Trulli, with Mark Webber losing time as he attempts to pass Alonso.

  43. 1' Glock beats the Brit's time, before his team-mate Trulli nips in front with a 1:32.779 to take first position.

  44. 2' Trulli and Glock both look to be on flying laps in their Toyotas, as Hamilton's time is under threat.

  45. 3' Glock is now out for his second run, with his Toyota currently in last place.

  46. 4' Rosberg in his Williams moves into fifth, with Hamilton, Massa, Raikkonen and Piquet ahead of him.

  47. 5' Most drivers have pitted ahead of one final run in Q1, with Rosberg on for a hot lap.

  48. 6' Ferrari and MacLaren play Q1 safe with the soft tyres, as Hamilton consolidates first place (1:33.290) and Fisichella posts the 14th fastest time.

  49. 7' Kubica goes sixth with his first lap, while Piquet sneaks into fourth on the super-softs.

  50. 8' Hamilton on the soft tyre still holds the fastest time, with Robert Kubica looking sprightly.

  51. 9' Rubens Barrichello takes tenth position, with Kubica Heidfeld and Nakajima also out on the track.

  52. 9' Massa's time was 1:33.510, with Hamilton in turn setting an improved fastest time of 1:33.290.

  53. 10' Lewis Hamilton is out in his MacLaren, while Kimi Raikkonen is overhauled by his team-mate Massa.

  54. 11' And Raikkonen takes top spot with a 1:33.650 to push down Vettel and Trulli.

  55. 12' The times remain pretty sluggish, as Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen are out.

  56. 13' Bourdais in his Toro Rosso is pushed all the way down to seventh as Vettel improves.

  57. 14' Trulli goes top with a 1:34.117, and Button moves into third, just behind Sebastian Vettel.

  58. 15' Bourdais remains the fastest with Rosberg, Trulli and Kovalainen trailing.

  59. 16' Piquet briefly takes top spot, but is pipped by Bourdais, who posts a 2:34.514.

  60. 17' 1:33.5 looks to be a reasonable benchmark for those drivers hoping to make it through this session, as Martin Brundell notes that, 'It is quite hot here in Bahrain'.

  61. 18' Kovalainen and Piquet head out as Fisichella records a 1:35.931.

  62. 19' Fisichella looks composed coming through turn four, but Sutil is the driver that most is expected of from 'the Force'.

  63. 20' And we are underway in Q1, with Adrian Sutil leading the way with Force India team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella.

  64. - As the drivers clamber into their cars, last minute tinkering continues before we get underway at the Sakhir circuit. According to Mark Webber, the drivers 'sweat buckets' just waiting in the garage - or maybe that is just him? Webber's team get the dry ice out again for the Australian.

  65. - Timo Glock led the standings of the third free practice, but encountered problems with his car in the closing stages - an electrical fault which Toyota will need to have rectified in the interlude today. Ferrari's Felipe Massa showed a marked improvement finishing second, while Kimi Raikkonen was in fifth. Nico Rosberg in his Williams maintained his good form, but can he transfer that for when it really matters?

  66. - Welcome to the qualifying session of the Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sakhir circuit. Lewis Hamilton produced an encouraging display in the final free practice, leading initially before finishing fourth; the Brawn duo of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello ended up in 15th and 16th places respectively.
