Live Commentary

  1. - Thank you for joining Eurosport-Yahoo! for today's practice sessions. Ferrari are dominating as expected, while Hamilton is a bit off the pace and there was a late fillip for Renault. We'll be back with qualifying on Saturday at 13:00 and the race on Sunday at the same time. Bye!

  2. 14:42 There are one or two hiccups as the drivers attempt to work on their starts, perhaps due to the damp. Hamilton was fourth then behind Kova, with Raikkonen fifth despite missing the last half-hour, Rosberg sixth, Vettel seventh and Sutil eighth... all the times are below on the left.

  3. 14:30 No one can usurp Fernando, so he heads the final list. The times are down on the morning session though.

  4. 14:28 The race is on to find a flying lap with only a minute left of the session.

  5. 14:28 Massa follows it closely, going second, with Kovalainen also bettering Hamilton's mark.

  6. 14:27 Alonso goes fastest!!! The track has dried quickly and he puts down a 1:48.454.

  7. 14:26 Piquet suffers a similar accident to Raikkonen, and also leaves his rear wing dangling.

  8. 14:21 Rosberg goes fifth from 13th as Williams pull a quick one out of the bag. Good work by the Grove outfit.

  9. 14:16 Only 14 minutes left of this truncated session. Hamilton still on top of the pops and likely to stay there as his lap was set in the dry.

  10. 14:09 The session is about to restart. Fisichella plowed straight through Raikkonen's fluid spillage - that's what caused his accident.

  11. 14:02 Fisichella had to abandon his Force India trackside while Raikkonen was able to drive away back to his team.

  12. 14:02 The red flag comes out. There is oil on the track where the crashes occurred and the stewards will have to clean it up.

  13. 13:59 RAIKKONEN SMASHES OFF THE REAR WING!! He spun out at turn nine and went into the barrier backwards. Soon after Giancarlo Fisichella follows him back into the garage with a similar incident!!

  14. 13:59 Vettel takes a trip over the grass.

  15. 13:57 Here they come, led by Nico Rosberg.

  16. 13:53 He improves on that but remains in fifth. He would be happy with such a finish despite the weather issue.

  17. 13:51 He begins a flying lap, but is over four seconds off the pace by its end as the tarmac remains slippy.

  18. 13:49 Vettel back on track with 41 minutes left in the session.

  19. 13:46 Still no sign of anyone venturing out. After what happened to Webber, the teams will be keen to keep their cars in one piece.

  20. 13:30 All the drivers are in the stands, working on their cars and biding their time.

  21. 13:26 Timo Glock takes a trip across the grass. The rain is still light. Humidity is 79 percent; track and air temperature 16 and 17 degrees centigrade respectively; and wind speed 3.7m/s.

  22. 13:26 David Coulthard in the other Red Bull also suffering a wobble, but avoids the wall.

  23. 13:22 Mark Webber slams his Red Bull into the tyre wall at Bruxelles. He lost it towards the exit and there was not enough run-off there to save him. Someone call the AA, a tow truck is needed.

  24. 13:21 It is definitely raining now, but not yet to the levels seen 10 years ago when that huge pile-up on lap one caused chaos.

  25. 13:16 Heidfeld goes seventh fastest.

  26. 13:15 Positions five to 10 are taken by Heikki Kovalainen (McLaren), Jarno Trulli (Toyota), Sebastian Vettel (Toro Rosso) and Nick Heidfeld (BMW-Sauber). The BMW boys have a lot to improve on this afternoon, while Toyota also had their problems.

  27. 13:12 Several cars including Kazuki Nakajima - who has stated his desire to remain with Williams in 2009 - come into the pits as the big drops fall. Massa is not one of them, setting a time 0.197 behind that of Hamilton.

  28. 13:10 The entire field is out on track as warnings flood in of impending rain. This could be fun... Ferrari's Felipe Massa, quickest in first practice, second behind McLaren's Hamilton. Third is the other Scuderia driver Kimi Raikkonen and fourth Fernando Alonso of Renault.

  29. 13:05 A few cars out early, perhaps wary of the threat of rain. Again the skies are overcast. Lewis Hamilton, third this morning, lays down a 1:48.805 to start.

  30. - Welcome back to Spa for the second practice session. There could be rain this afternoon...
