Live Commentary

  1. - A thrilling session sees pole position for Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull. Sixth place for Jenson Button. Join us for the race, with lap-by-lap coverage from 13:00 UK time on Sunday.

  2. 0' Webber.... well outside! He goes third, and it's POLE FOR SEBASTIAN VETTEL!

  3. 1' Barrichello goes quickest, but VETTEL TRUMPS HIM!! 1:19.509... what about Webber?

  4. 2' No improvement so far with less than two minutes to go.

  5. 3' Button is fifth as the drivers come in for a change of tyres.

  6. 5' Now Webber by four tenths! 1:20.040 for the in-form Australian.

  7. 5' Vettel goes quickest with a 1:20.404 despite a cross-country excursion - amazing lap.

  8. 7' First flying lap from Rubens Barrichello - 1:21.417, a slow one. Vettel immediately goes faster.

  9. Q3 Green light for Q3 - 10 minutes to decide the grid for the British Grand Prix!

  10. 0' Alonso stays ninth as Sebastian Vettel goes fastest... and Felipe Massa is out! He will start 11th on the grid! Kubica, Kovalainen, Piquet and Heidfeld also out.

  11. 0' Button improves to eighth with the time at zero - will it be enough?

  12. 1' Button goes seventh but he is not safe yet - Glock and Barrichello push the Brit into ninth with time running down...

  13. 1' Massa improves a little but is eighth and still in danger.

  14. 2' Everybody except Webber is out on the track - crunch time for Jenson Button...

  15. 3' Raikkonen records the fastest first sector of anyone, and goes third overall. That will do.

  16. 5' Piquet runs wide over the grass and that won't do the bottom of his car any favours.

  17. 6' Button, Kubica, Piquet, Kovalainen and Heidfeld are the bottom five at the moment. The championship leader comes in for a change of tyres and will probably have two goes at posting a competitive time.

  18. 9' Webber goes quicker again with a 1:18.209, the fastest lap of the weekend.

  19. 11' Blimey! Mark Webber drills a 1:18.638. See you in Q3, Mark.

  20. 12' All 15 cars are out on the track and Massa posts the first serious time, a 1:19.257.

  21. Q2 Off we go! Fifteen cars remain, only 10 will go through. A 15-minute session.

  22. - Hamilton: "I was pushing as hard as I could with the car but what can I say? It was just dead slow ... I gave it my all and there's nothing really more I can do."

  23. - The wreckage of Sutil's car is being cleared off the track and we will soon be ready to go again.

  24. 0' There are still officially 24 seconds on the clock in Q1, but that is obviously not enough time to complete an out lap so this session is over.

  25. 0' And that means HAMILTON IS OUT!! Fisichella, Bourdais, Sutil, Hamilton and Buemi are the casualties. The world champion had his last-ditch lap scuppered by that red flag -disaster.

  26. 0' Red flag! The session is effectively ended as Sutil smashes into a tyre wall. He looks OK but that was a big smash.

  27. 1' Now Kovalainen goes 14th! Will that be enough? Massa is up into ninth.

  28. 2' Raikkonen goes sixth, and he is almost certainly safe, but Kovalainen comes through in 17th - he looks doomed!

  29. 4' Webber is fastest with 1:18.674, and there are some big names in the drop zone: Raikkonen, Heidfeld, Massa, Buemi and Kovalainen

  30. 6' Kovalainen is running dead last and he comes in for a very quick change of tyres.

  31. 8' Big moment for Lewis Hamilton!! He goes sideways through Becketts and does well to keep the car on the black stuff. Hamilton certainly not holding back.

  32. 9' Webber goes fastest for Red Bull, who are using an odd-looking 'duck-billed platypus' front wing.

  33. 11' Jarno Trulli goes 1:18.886 - what a lap! It's Webber second and Williams third and fourth...

  34. 12' Trulli is fastest with 1:19.356, Nakajima is second and Button third. Plenty of action out there.

  35. 14' Button's first flying lap puts him fifth. He'll need to do better, and almost certainly will.

  36. 16' Sutil clocks 1:20.860. He will do well to get out of Q1 for Force India.

  37. 18' 1:21.105 for Bourdais, who is quickest early on. He has been outqualified 6-1 by team-mate Sebastien Buemi so far this season.

  38. Q1 The first session is under way. It's 20 minutes, at the end of which the five bottom drivers will be eliminated.

  39. - Welcome to qualifying for the British Grand Prix from Silverstone!
