    Kubica triumphs in Montreal

Poland's Robert Kubica, driving a BMW Sauber, won a drama-filled Canadian Grand Prix in which pre-race favourite Lewis Hamilton took himself and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen out of the race in an early pit lane collision. More

Live Commentary

  1. - Thanks for joining me - it's been an interesting afternoon to say the least! Kubica is drenched in champagne as is customary and he deserves the adulation.

  2. - Hamilton and Massa are now tied on points, behind Kubica.

  3. 0/70 KUBICA TAKES IT!!! AND WITH THE WIN COMES THE LEAD IN THE DRIVERS CHAMPIONSHIP!! HEIDFELD IS SECOND, AND COULTHARD THIRD!!

  4. 1/70 FINAL LAP...Here we go! Kubica passes the stretch he crashed on last year, and he will surely win here.

  5. 4/70 So, it's Kubica from Heidfeld from Coulthard. It's Glock in fourth, Jarno Trulli fifth and Massa in sixth. If Massa can gain a place he could go level with Hamilton in the championship standings.

  6. 8/70 The track is definitely making it hard for the drivers, times are way down on what you'd expect. Coulthard closes the gap on Heidfeld to six seconds or so. Button is 12th, second-last in reality.

  7. 11/70 Barrichello lets Timo Glock through into fourth. Kubica is still out in front.

  8. 17/70 Giancarlo Fisichella hits the wall and his front is sticking out. But as yet no sign of the safety car, just a crane and some yellow flags.

  9. 18/70 Kubica is 18 laps away from his maiden GP win. Coulthard remains in third, he's looking for his first points of the season. Massa is gaining ground quickly, however.

  10. 19/70 Massa with a delightful piece of driving to climb two places into fourth.

  11. 24/70 Massa is down in sixth. Kubica leads, with Heidfeld in second. Alonso is OUT!! HE over-steered on a corner and smashed into the wall. No safety car required.

  12. 26/70 Alonso is seriously pushing Heidfeld for second. "If you are losing time, let him through," instruct his team on the radio.

  13. 28/70 Kubica leads, with an 11-second lead over Heidfeld, with Kazuki Nakajima in third. Coulthard is fourth.

  14. 29/70 Piquet is in the pits and out of the race. His brakes are wrecked!

  15. 33/70 The Scot is in and out quickly from the pits, and he emerges fully fuelled into third.

  16. 34/70 And Coulthard is now in second! Bear in mind the pitstops, however, he's yet to take one.

  17. 38/70 Jenson Button has been fuelled into the end of the race. He's up into 13th. Coulthard, meanwhile, is having a good race and is now in fifth.

  18. 40/70 And Barrichello is out in front! Kubica steals second from Heidfeld with a neat move.

  19. 44/70 Nelson Piquet Jnr is the second to go into the wall - but he's fine and a neat reversing manoeuvre sees him back in the race.

  20. 46/70 Heidfeld leads by 4.7 from Rubens Barrichello, who is now in second. Barrichello has the experience necessary for a race like this.

  21. 48/70 Raikkonen's reaction to Hamilton's mistake was remarkably calm. No punches were thrown, and both appeared very friendly as their races ended.

  22. 50/70 Nick Heidfeld is the new leader, with Kubica in second.

  23. 51/70 The red light was on, it was Hamilton's error. He was going too quickly in the pits, spurred by seeing Kubica speed past him, and he drove way too recklessly. What a mistake from the Briton and his race is over!

  24. 51/70 HAMILTON HAS SMASHED INTO THE BACK OF RAIKKONEN IN THE PIT LANE!!! WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT!!!

  25. 53/70 Sutil's car is on fire! Hence the safety car, which is bad news for Hamilton, who's lead will now be completely wiped out.

  26. 55/70 Sutil is out of the way, and the drivers are firing past with no problems. Hamilton is pulling away. The sun is out!

  27. 56/70 Hamilton's lead is 6.8. Adrian Sutil has HIT THE WALL!!!!! He's out of the car and there's smoke everywhere - a bit like the Dolorian from Back to the Future after it's been back in time (or forward, obviously).

  28. 58/70 Raikkonen just lapped faster than Hamilton, which might not bode well. Elsewhere, Fernando Alonso is in fifth, with Felipe Massa sixth.

  29. 61/70 Hamilton leads by four seconds now from Kubica, and seven from Raikkonen. The track is showing the first signs of breaking up on one of the latter bends.

  30. 62/70 Nico Rosberg is going really well, he's up to fourth after starting fifth on the grid. David Coulthard is in 12th.

  31. 67/70 Hamilton leads by 1.8 from Kubica. Meanwhile Jenson Button, who started in the pit lane, remains in 20th.

  32. 70/70 It's Hamilton from Robert Kubica, with Kimi Raikkonen in third.

  33. 70/70 AND WE'RE OFF!!!!! Hamilton holds on to the lead, and all the drivers get away in formation. It's windy in Montreal and this is going to be an interesting race.

  34. - They're off on the formation lap and here's where we get a first look at the track. Hamilton has gone with softer tyres.

  35. - Now, what about this track. After yesterday's qualifying it resembled a carpark laid by pirate contractors. There was tarmac cracking up everywhere and times suffered as a result. Repairs were promised, but the question is whether Montreal will stand 70 laps of crazy F1 action.

  36. - We had a beaver and a squirrel on the track yesterday - both were lucky to escape with their lives and would be well advised to stay in with a nice takeaway tonight and watch the action from the safety of their dam and nest respectively.

  37. - Good evening petrolheads! Welcome to our LIVE!! coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. Lewis Hamilton leads the championship and he's on pole. This was the track he won his first race on 12 months ago.
