Live Commentary

  1. - So that ends qualifying - The Ferraris look in control and Lewis Hamilton has it all to do. Join us tomorrow for the race and if you're a Hamilton fan pray for rain and a messy race.

  2. - Webber is seventh, Coulthard eight, Glock ninth, and it is Picquet who will move into 10th.

  3. - Second row we have Alonso and Trulli (what a good performance by him). Kovalainen is only fifth on the grid and will share the third row with Kubica.

  4. - Hamilton came next which means he will start 13th in between the Toro Rossos of Vettel and Bourdias. He will also have to try and get past 11th placed Nick Heidfeld early who will look to defend for championship leader Robert Kubica.

  5. EQ And we are all done now - the Ferraris dominate we start with Raikkonen and then Massa - first and second on the grid.

  6. 14.00 Raikkonen gives up on his final lap - he knows he has the pole.

  7. 14.00 Kubicia up to fourth....but then Hamilton with a 1:16.449 is good enough to get him ahead of Alonso for third.

  8. 14.00 Same story with Alonso - he stays third.

  9. 13.59 Massa can't improve - stays second.

  10. 13.58 They all pit for new tyres - and after a lap each we have Raikkonen, Massa, Alonso, Kovalainen, Kubica, Coulthard, Hamilton, Glock, Webber and then Trulli in that order - one flying lap left each.

  11. 13.57 A great lap from Massa which is then bettered by Raikkonen (1:16.449) - Alonso with the third best lap but Hamilton makes a mistake on his first lap and loses control - he is only 6th (which really means 16th)

  12. 13:54 Trulli spins on his first flying lap of Q3 and that affects Mark Webber behind him. Timo Glock the only one to have clocked a proper lap so far.

  13. 13.52 Point to note is that Hamilton will NOT be able to choose his fuel even though he will start out of the top 10. He can't take advantage of the penalty in that way.

  14. 13.50 The 10 minute shoot-out for pole is underway.

  15. 13.49 The crucial moment comes now - how much fuel will the cars decide to take in? What should Hamilton do given his special circumstances? Decisions, Decisions.

  16. 13.43 So who did we lose there? Out go Picquet, Heidfeld, Rosberg, Vettel, and Bourdais.

  17. 13.42 GREAT DRAMA - Piquet moves up to 10th ahead of Heidfeld, but then Coulthard sneaks in ahead of him to drop him back out. Heidfeld IS OUT and Kubicia just sneaks in 10th.

  18. 13.41 Hamilton in fourth just 4/10s of a second off Coulthard so he is going to come back out just to be safe and he does enough to jump up to third.

  19. 13.39 Kovalainenn a little too close to the drop zone for comfort (9th) after his first lap and his next lap only bumps him back up to eight. The McLarens are losing time in the final section.

  20. 13.37 The BMWs are the last two to deliver a flying lap. Kubica (8th) and Heidfeld (10th). At the moment Coulthard (11), Vettel (12), Bourdais (13), Piquet (14) and Roseberg (15) on the chopping block.

  21. 13.35 Kovalainen struggling a bit today - he is only eight fastest in the early stages of Q2.

  22. 13.35 Massa goes 1:15.041 with Raaikkonen second just behind but remember - these times are just to get into the top 10, they will be scrapped come the start of Q3.

  23. 13.33 Another fast lap from Alonso - 1:15.634 which is FASTER than Hamilton's first lap.

  24. 13.30 Bourdais again the man who gets the session underway.

  25. 13.29 A note on a few impressive late performances in Q1 - Jarno Trulli ended up with the third fastest lap in his Toyota and Robert Kubica managed to get up to fifth. Nakajima has just been interviewed and blamed traffic on his final flying lap for his exit.

  26. 13.27 Underway now with Q2 - all very close in that first session - we will lose another five in the next 20 minutes.

  27. EQ1 So Q1 is over and who have we lost? BOTH Honda's (Button and Barrichello) are gone, the two Force India's too (Fisichella and Sutil) and also Kazuki Nakajima's Williams. The Ferraris fastest but the serious business still to begin.

  28. 13.20 Another scrappy lap from Heidfeld but he does enough to get up to 12th and he will be ok for Q2.

  29. 13.19 Heidfeld back out with just 14 seconds to spare for one final lap with softer tires.

  30. 13.18 Massa with a 1:15.024 goes fastest - he was particularly quick in the final section of the track and Ferrari really look fast in that sector. Raikkonen has gone second now too. Hamilton is going to sit the rest of the session out.

  31. 13.17 Heidfeld could be in big trouble here despite the fact that he is only 8/10s a second behind Hamilton in first. Just goes to show how close all this is.

  32. 13.16 The BMWs are clearly in trouble here - Heidfeld has just gone on another lap but he is STILL 18th in the drop zone. Kubica with a 16:00.00 puts him safe in ninth but not great.

  33. 13.14 More evidence that the Renaults are fast this weekend. Fernando Alonso has just gone fourth fastest ahead of Kovalainen. Vettel still sixth. Button, Barrichello, Heidfeld, Sutil and Fisichella in the drop zone at the moment.

  34. 13.12 Replays suggest that Raikkonen might have had all four wheels off the track for a brief spell on his fastest lap so that could be chaulked off - but he did enough in his other laps to be safe. We only lose five cars in Q1.

  35. 13.10 The big four are currently the top four - Hamilton in front, then comes Raikkonen and Massa, and then Heikki Kovalainen.

  36. 13.09 Fast lap from Hamilton - 1:15.634 that is 3/10s of a second better than Massa.

  37. 13.08 The two McLaren's now on their opening laps.

  38. 13.07 Massa and Raikkonen will both safely be in Q2 - they set the fastest two laps so far with Massa's 1:16.107 being just slightly faster.

  39. 13.06 The Ferraris now both out on the track as they look to lay down a marker.

  40. 13.05 Track getting busy now and the best early lap has been set by Sebastien Vettel with a 1:16.303 - the Toro Rosso driver looking good this weekend - he was third fastest this morning.

  41. 13.00 We are underway with Q1 - Sebastien Bourdais in the Toro Rosso is the first man out on track. Interestingly the multi Champ Car champion is the only Frenchman competing this weekend.

  42. 12.55 Just about to get underway here - conditions are good - nice and sunny - although there is a forecast for thunderstorms tomorrow which could add another twist to proceedings.

  43. - With Lewis Hamilton starting 10 places back due to his horror show in Canada you have to expect the Ferraris to lead qualifying, especially since championship leader Robert Kubica has been struggling with his BMW in practice. The Renaults could be the dark horses though - Alonso topped Free Practice two and Nelson Picquet Junior was fastest this morning.

  44. - Welcome to LIVE coverage of this afternoon's qualifying from Magny-Cours - an extremely important hour coming up as with overtaking being so tough at the French GP, position on the grid takes on added importance.
