Live Commentary

  1. - All the times are to your left. Join us again at 13:00 for the second session of qualifying for this German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring.

  2. 10:32 That completes a McLaren one-two with Ferrari third and fifth. Alonso's Renault breaks them up.

  3. 10:31 BUT HAMILTON THEN GOES EVEN QUICKER!!! Before that Raikkonen went fifth quickest and Alonso fourth.

  4. 10:30 KOVALAINEN FASTER ON HIS FINAL LAP!!!

  5. 10:29 Hamilton cannot maintain a flying lap through sector two as Massa keeps hold of the top spot heading into the final minute...

  6. 10:25 Kubica is out of the session by the way. Heikki Kovalainen of McLaren and Alonso both looking to take third position as the clock winds down...

  7. 10:20 Massa faster than Lewis with 1:15.796, while Kimi is still over a second off in third... 10 minutes to go. The teams will be allowed to practice their starts on the grid after the session.

  8. 10:17 KUBICA INTO THE TYRES!!! He looked to drag the car right and lost it completely, sliding sideways across the gravel and into the barriers.

  9. 10:15 Raikkonen has a brief dalliance with top spot, almost in the 1:16s now, before Hamilton smashes his time with 1:16.213. The Briton tries for another quick lap but touches the grass and that puts paid to it.

  10. 10:11 Alonso loses control and his chance of a quick lap as he leaves the track. Nico Rosberg of Williams is top now with 1:18.018 while Webber goes third behind Raikkonen. Then there is Rosberg, Piquet and Glock.

  11. 10:03 Bourdais came off when challenging Vettel's time, which was substantially quicker. Sutil goes top with BMW's Nick Heidfeld also there or thereabouts.

  12. 09:57 Sebastien Bourdais the only man out. He is second behind team-mate Vettel. The track is almost completely dry now.

  13. 09:48 And now Vettel puts down a 1:22. A 1:14 gave Kimi pole last year.

  14. 09:46 Vettel records a 1:24 for first spot with three-quarters-of-an-hour left in this first session today.

  15. 09:44 Raikkonen slips behind his Scuderia mate at the top, with Toyota's Timo Glock and Honda's Rubens Barrichello now third and fourth. All the times are on the left-hand side of the screen.

  16. 09:36 Ferrari man Felipe Massa quickest so far ahead of Alonso.

  17. 09:32 The circuit positively brimming with cars, the sound of screaming engines reverberating around the Hockenheimring. The sky is malevolent...

  18. 09:27 Kazuki Nakajima of Williams and Force India's Adrian Sutil post decent times as Hamilton tops the list with a 1:29.

  19. 09:23 Alonso and Vettel have gone quicker than Piquet, with Hamilton fourth.

  20. 09:21 Hamilton, back on the circuit, spins out in the wet and into the gravel trap. He recovers to resume his lap, no harm done.

  21. 09:20 Nelson Piquet Jr with the early mark, nowhere near what we will see later this weekend of course. Renault team-mate Fernando Alonso joins him.

  22. 09:17 Hamilton brings his McLaren back in after a short run-out. Sebastian Vettel takes the Toro Rosso for a spin - he has been confirmed as one of Red Bull's drivers for next season when David Coulthard retires.

  23. 09:15 Lewis Hamilton among the first to go out. Usually the German GP takes place in warm conditions... there's time yet, but on this evidence don't hold your breath for a hot, dry weekend.

  24. 09:05 The conditions are wet, although it is not raining at present. There is noticable surface water on the track, sent spraying by the cars as they pass.

  25. - Welcome to LIVE coverage of free practice from Hockenheim ahead of Sunday's German Grand Prix! We have a bumper 90-minute session ahead of us.
