Live Commentary

  1. - Lewis Hamilton was down after two sectors and looked to be in trouble, but he absolutely nailed the stadium sector and clocked a 1:15.666. Hats off!

  2. 0' Raikkonen goes second and Massa goes quicker again. Then Kovalainen goes second and Hamilton has it all to do.... POLE FOR HAMILTON!!! A last-ditch piece of brilliance from the Briton!

  3. 1' Raikkonen straps on a new set of tyres, while Kovalainen's pit crew tell him to do everything he did before - except run off the track.

  4. 2' Hamilton is slow on his first hot lap - he is third after Fernando Alonso goes second!

  5. 4' Massa's 1:16.323 is eight tenths faster than his team-mate Raikkonen. Meanwhile Kovalainen runs across the grass!

  6. 6' 1:17.126 from Trulli, then Raikkonen spoils a hot lap by going wide twice.

  7. 7' Trulli is the first man to embark on a hot lap. Each driver will only get a couple of chances to set his time.

  8. 10' Off we go. Ten minutes to determine pole position - strap yourselves in and other motoring metaphors!

  9. Q3 On to Q3, which will be contested by: Hamilton, Massa, Kovalainen, Alonso, Raikkonen, Kubica, Trulli, Coulthard, Vettel and Webber.

  10. 0' David Coulthard saves himself with the clock on zero again! Timo Glock, Nick Heidfeld, Nico Rosberg, Jenson Button and Sebastien Bourdais are out. A disappointing result for BMW's Heidfeld.

  11. 2' Kovalainen runs wide, kicking dirt over the circuit. Meanwhilwe, Coulthard, Rosberg, Vettel, Bourdais and Button and the men in the red, placed 11th to 15th respectively.

  12. 4' Heikki Kovalainen looks safe in fourth, but McLaren are sending him out for another crack. Better safe than sorry, I suppose.

  13. 6' Lewis Hamilton goes quickest with a 1:14.603. Massa second quickest. Oddly it is the favourites who have made all of the early running so far.

  14. 8' Kimi Raikkonen has switched from medium to soft tyres - 1:14.949 is the result and he leads the way for the moment. First man under 1:15 this weekend.

  15. 13' Nobody is interested in taking to the track just yet. Everybody playing a waiting game.

  16. Q2 The second session is under way. This one is fifteen minutes, at the end of which we will lose another five drivers.

  17. 0' All change as the flag comes out! Trulli and Coulthard save their respective bacon, while Nakajima, Piquet, Barrichello, Sutil and Fisichella crash out.

  18. 2' Bourdais, Sutil, Trulli, Coulthard and Fisichella are the men in red as we enter the lasy couple of minutes of Q1.

  19. 8' Hamilton goes to the top of the pile with a 1:15.218. This is shaping up to be a fascinating session.

  20. 12' 1:15.884 is a decent marker from Massa and Kimi Raikkonen goes even quicker. That will be enough to see them through to Q2.

  21. 15' Nothing of any note so far. We hear that Kimi Raikkonen is still very unhappy with his car...

  22. 20' Q1 is under way! The five slowest drivers will perish at the end of this 20-minute session.

  23. - Welcome to LIVE coverage of qualifying for the German GP from Hockenheim!
