Live Commentary

  1. 0' And Heikki is the official leader from Rosberg and Hamilton.

  2. 0' Kovalainen up into P1 with 1:22.278...

  3. 0' The clock runs out with Rosberg currently still top.

  4. 1' Button struggling down in 14th but improves to 10th...

  5. 3' Rosberg top of the list with 1:22.337. The Williams driver has been linked with a move to BMW Sauber.

  6. 6' Hamilton goes P1!! He also led the way in sessions in Germany, but saw his race effectively ended by that immediate puncture when he was so quick off the start line... 1:22.554 his time.

  7. 8' What do you think of the Hungaroring? Leave a comment below and we'll air your views in commentary for afternoon practice.

  8. 10' Qualifying will be important this weekend as there are not many overtaking opportunities. Hungaroring: Circuit guide

  9. 12' Trulli second on a 22.831. Toyota looking to regain some form after a fall-off in performance in the last few races.

  10. 16' Kovalainen 10th in what is thought to be an identical car to the MP4-24 of Hamilton, still sitting in second. The Finn did brilliantly to take a point in the last race in a dog of a car... Webber takes maiden win despite penalty

  11. 18' Giancarlo Fisichella jumps from dead last to 15th, while Force India team-mate Adrian Sutil is now 20th.

  12. 20' Vettel is lacking grip and down in 12th... Buemi runs wide...

  13. 21' He cannot take it all the way through and finishes over a second slower than Webber's best.

  14. 21' Lewis half a second under P1 at the first split.

  15. 22' The familiar screams from all around this 'Mickey Mouse' circuit - it's sort of shaped like the Disney rodent's head/ears - as the changes in set-up are tested out.

  16. 24' Massa still struggling with grip, running wide again. Apparently Toro Rosso's newest driver Alguersuari was practising his start when he stalled it. Gray Matter: The Red Bull driver factory

  17. 25' Sack the commentator - it was Massa who ran wide, not Raikkonen.

  18. 26' Raikkonen tells his team of some issues via the radio - and ends this lap in third spot. Hamilton is now second, 0.223 behind Webber.

  19. 27' Raikkonen takes a second trip to the gravel, running slightly wide. Button looking to improve on his 12th spot.

  20. 29' A couple of minutes ago Alguersuari stalled the Toro Rosso not far along the pit-lane and his team and some stewards came running to wheel it to their garage. No harm done - most cars were already in anyway.

  21. 30' Raikkonen one of the few enjoying the clean air, going 13th quickest then seventh quickest.

  22. 34' Very quiet on the track at the moment as almost all the team tinker with their babies in the garages.

  23. 37' Want more build-up to this weekend's action? Check out our list of stories: More F1 news

  24. 39' Here's a strange thing: Robert Kubica leads the way. Not for long though - Webber's 1:22.615 puts Austrian Fizzy Drink Co. top of the tree.

  25. 40' As the track rubbers in we should get towards 1:20. Button 19th with only Nick Heidfeld of BMW below him. And Hammo goes P2 ahead of Kazuki Nakajima of Williams and Alonso.

  26. 42' Over halfway through and all drivers have now set a time. Rosberg at the top with 1:23.268 ahead of Alonso, Vettel and Webber - McLaren's reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton 20th. Scratch that - he's just gone 10th.

  27. 45' The electric Seb Vettel with a 1:23.713 to go P1. Red Bull have taken 1-2s at the last two races, with both the German and Aussie team-mate Mark Webber now keen to make up ground on Button in the World Championship... Drivers' standings

  28. 47' Massa leads the way with 1:23.735.

  29. 48' If you're brave enough to pick your Fantasy F1 team before the practice order is determined, you can do it through here - and pick up some perhaps rubbish tips on the way... On the grid in Hungary

  30. 50' Fernando Alonso second in the Renault R29, while team-mate Nelson Piquet Jr is ninth and bottom.

  31. 51' Before the toing-and-froing makes us forget about him, Alguersuari has defended his presence in the cockpit. Q#amp;A: Jaime Alguersuari

  32. 53' Felipe Massa also out and sneaks ahead of Kimi. Will the Scuderia be competitive this weekend? Perhaps - but it is the McLaren which apparently has the big updates, as well as the Brawn...

  33. 54' Trulli top with 1:24.057, Glock third behind Buemi and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen fourth ahead of the teen.

  34. 56' Some action now as the Toyotas of Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock come out.

  35. 60' Seeing as you've got a couple of minutes, why not have a watch of the latest episode of The Factory? What do you mean you have to work?! Sod that: The Factory: Episode 4

  36. 64' Nothing happening out on track, other than Buemi going quickest with 1:25.034. And soon after the Toro Rosso lads come in.

  37. 70' Alguersuari back ahead of him with 1:25.820. Button's not the only driver to give STR some grief over his participation this weekend: Massa hits out at new boy

  38. 72' Swiss Buemi with a 1:28.550 to take over top spot.

  39. 73' Alguersuari with a 1:29.240 as Buemi starts a lap...

  40. 76' Jaime pleases his team with a 1:34.715 then on the next lap improves to 1:31.457. Back him to win the GP this weekend!! Wondering what the lap records are? Scroll down and you will find out...

  41. 80' Rubens Barrichello, who apparently appeared at the Hungaroring wearing a 'Mr Happy' tee-shirt after slagging off the team in Germany, out on track and looking to lay down an early time. He pulls into the pits though. Barrichello now 'Mr Happy'

  42. 84' Wind speed is 6.5m/s, track temp 30 degrees, air temp 24 degrees and humidity 53 per cent. Not very humid as yet but certainly warmer than at the British and German GPs, which could be good news for the Brawn boys.

  43. 86' He tells his team that everything worked well on the car - well it would if you tootled round at 30mph, wouldn't it? Okay, I'll lay off the lad. Unlike Jenson Button: Button warns of 'destroying' teenager

  44. 87' He completes a VERY slow installation lap. The British F3 champion replaces sacked Frenchman Sebastien Bourdais.

  45. 89' Toro Rosso new boy Spanish teenager Jaime Alguersuari is out immediately before the majority of the traffic. This is going to be some education for the 19-year-old...

  46. 90' We have an intitial hour-and-a-half-long session this morning then another in the afternoon.

  47. - Welcome to LIVE coverage of the Hungarian Grand Prix - first free practice, no less.

  2. Let's face it... Day one is all about getting the cars set up right for the qualifying time.. Don't write of the Brawns just yet... and come race day, let's see if they can get the stop strategy right this time. Crossed fingers here...
    C'mon Brawn !!

  4. I reckon Jenson will have his work cut out as the 'rest' are catching up pretty quickly now. This is going to be one of the most surprising 'final day' deciders ever in F1 and can only be good for the sport

From Ray C, on Fri 24 Jul 11:45AM
  5. Gazman, Wujum is right, there's a lot of History to Hungaroring, great races too (just check some on BBC f1 site, or see Schumacher's 'qualy-pace' tactics with Brawn), great atmosphere. True it's a tight track (designed to be), but it's a unique one. Unfortunately overtaking is a problem on every track, at least this year! Enjoy the race.

  10. With so little overtaking oppotunites the Hungarian GP is one of the most boring races in the calendar and if any GP should be scrapped from the schedule it should be this one.

From Gazman, on Fri 24 Jul 10:28AM
  11. Hungaroring has much history. However, it looks like it's gonna be a battle of pitstop strategies again since except for the first corner of the first lap, overtaking will be quite a challenge for the boys.

From wujum, on Fri 24 Jul 10:28AM
  12. GO LEWIS! Win this weekend!
