Live Commentary

  1. 0' Apologies for the confusion, but as it stands Alonso is on pole. Thanks for joining us and see you again tomorrow at 13:00 UK time for LIVE comments from the Hungarian GP.

  2. 0' Alonso still seems unsure what the starting order is for tomorrow as official confirmation not yet through. F1 has lost all its timing abilities, which is very, very rare. The good news is that Massa is fine.

  3. 0' Renault back with a vengence and from what we can tell Alonso is on poll. Bit of confusion at the moment!

  4. 0' Alonso is on poll!

  5. 0' Chequered flag is out as Vettel pushes hard on his final lap.

  6. 1' Rosberg fastest now as Alonso goes on a charge.

  7. 2' Raikonen gets in wrong coming out of bend seven. He holds it together but that mistake will cost him dearly.

  8. 3' Button looking to pull something special out of the bag now.

  9. 5' Webber now top of the standings, as Hamilton looks to take over. He's almost a second slower than the Red Bull, but still on the front row.

  10. 6' Rosberg looks like he's on a mission. Never been on poll before and posts third fastest time as Hamilton takes over at the top.

  11. 7' Kovalainen fastest so far, but Alonso comes in quicker. Standings changing all the time here.

  12. 8' Race fuel on board now so cars will be heavier and breaking a little slower.

  13. 10' Q3 gets underway as the air amublance leaves the track with Massa.

  14. - Q3 due to start in five minutes. 14:10 UK time.

  15. - Sources suggest that Massa took a nasty bash on the chin but is ok, which is excellent news.

  16. - Reports now suggesting that a wishbone section of the suspension on Barrichello's Brawn came free during Q2. Could this have been responsible for Massa's crash?

  17. - Massa's car being loaded on to back of a lorry now. Front of the Ferrari totally in tact, which is a good sign.

  18. - Barrichello confirms that something broke on his car and he lost full control, leading to his failure to make Q3. Stewards out on the track now looking for debris.

  19. - Reports coming through that Massa may have been hit on the head by some debris. Break marks suggest that the Brazilian will have tried to slow the car before impact.

  20. - Q3 has been delayed while stewards deal with Massa's car. Looks like the Ferrari driver was stuck in the car for a while and may have suffered break failure. Fingers crossed he is ok. His car certainly doesn't look to be in great shape.

  21. 0' So Buemi, Trulli, Barrichello, Glock and Piquet miss out on Q1. Accident also for Massa as drivers get ready for final qualifying session.

  22. 0' Massa's gone off the track as Nakajima moves into third. Looks like the Brawns are going out. Barichello down in 13th, what can Button do?

  23. 1' Kovalainen making one last effort and he's through, into fifth for the McLaren driver.

  24. 1' Webber now fastest as Glock fails to make top 10. But looks like he can get in another lap. Piquet also fails to break into top 10. Alonso looks like he's happy.

  25. 2' Vettel has just gone fastest as Massa moves into the top 10. Glock in trouble now.

  26. 2' Kovalainen, last year's winner, is out of the top 10 now. Nobody looks safe at the moment!

  27. 4' Trulli needs a good lap here and manages to force his way into the top 10. Huge last sector from the Toyota man

  28. 7' Alonso is burning up the track and sets a new mark.

  29. 9' Now for Hamilton, who has been much slower than the Red Bulls through the two middle sectors. But he's into third and that will do him.

  30. 10' Vettel takes over from his Red Bull team-mate.

  31. 11' Webber is flying and sets the new lowest lap time,

  32. 12' Another five drivers to be eliminated from this session.

  33. 13' Raikkonen and rest of top guys going out on same soft tyres from Q1.

  34. 15' Q2 is underway.

  35. 0' Kubica is out but Alonso up to sixth. Both BMWs have been eliminated, along with the two Force Indias.

  36. 0' Last chance for Fisichella and he boosts himself up to 11th. Good effort from the Force India driver.

  37. 1' Yellow flags are out with marshalls on the track. 30 seconds for drivers to start their lap.

  38. 2' Trulli into 11th, which relegates Fisichella at this late stage. Hamilton up to fourth and going again. Infact, all 20 cars out on the track as Rosberg goes fastest.

  39. 3' Kovalainen up into seventh so some relief for McLaren.

  40. 4' Nobody is sitting this session out as they all need to guage the track which is heating up. Crucial lap for Kovalainen, who is quick through the first sector.

  41. 6' Rosberg is going again on the super softs. Hamilton currently seventh.

  42. 7' Piquet really having to work and he tells in his poor time. Piquet back in 18th and looks like he'll miss out.

  43. 9' Plenty of over-steer from Webber and looks like the Red Bull driver has got the wrong tyres as Raikkonen takes over at the top of the timings.

  44. 11' Hamilton back in fifth so far.

  45. 12' Hamilton and Vettel both out on the track and the Red Bull driver sets a new fast time of 1:21.590. Vettel's team-mate Webber now into second on identical tyres.

  46. 14' Massa on softs and he sets fourth fastest lap behind Buemi, Raikkonen and Rosberg.

  47. 15' Rosberg out on the track now but he's trailing Buemi through the first sectors.

  48. 17' Buemi sets the early mark with 1:22.380. Force India paddock meanwhile looking very busy on Sutil's car.

  49. 19' Alguersuari is out and on soft tyres. Looks like he's taking things reasonably easy to start off with.

  50. 20' Q1 is underway.

  51. - Temperatures are up from this morning, about 23 degrees and it looks like they may rise by another degree or two during the three qualifying sessions. The sun is shining now.

  52. - 20 cars are ready to take to the grid for Q1, including Toro Rosso's Spanish teenager Jaime Alguersuari, who has never before raced in qualifying. A big day for the 19-year-old who is set to become F1's youngest starter. And he did pretty well this morning when he came in 18th ahead of Fisichella and Sutil in their Force Indias.

  53. - Hamilton explained how pleased he was with the improvements his team first made to his car in Germany. Those improvements have been refined this week and the results have been there for all to see, with the Briton leading all three practice sessions. Hamilton maintains this is the happiest he has been with the car all season.

  54. - I'm sure you all know how qualifying works, but here's a reminder. All 20 cars take part in a 20-minute session (Q1) at the end of which the bottom five are eliminated. Next comes a 15-minute session (Q2) to eliminate another five. Then the final 10 take part in Q3, a 10-minute session to determine the front of the grid.

  55. - Conditions are cooler today than they were on Friday and it's also pretty blustery at the Budapest track. But it is dry, despite the cloud cover.

  56. - The 10th round of the 2009 F1 World Championship and Saturday's final free practice again proved fruitful for the McLarens, with defending world champion Lewis Hamilton fastest and team-mate Heikki Kovalainen fourth.

  57. - Good afternoon and welcome to LIVE coverage of qualifying for the Hungarian GP from the Hungaroring, near Budapest.

  4. We all saw the dejected faces of Massa's family members (esp. the Dad) when he lost to LH last season. Now what's the Dad's face going to look like now that Massa is in intensive care? Come on Massa, get of the hospital bed and put the big smile back on our faces! from ghanaweb4u

  7. At the outset let us wish Masa a speddy recovery.

Marulituabaja has predicted LH would lead and win the race. What a wishful thinking? If wishes were horses then ofcourse we know who woud be riding them. Good Luck!!

I wish Alonso a win. The much awaited, long eluding win. This year we have mixed results. It is not dominated by a few.

Vettle is cming up nicely. May be in years to come he would make Germany poud.

From Ravi, on Sun 26 Jul 8:01AM
  8. I predict Lewis Hamilton will lead this race, and will win this race

  9. Re John F's some "pratt" I bet you he has a lot more money than you have and e is clearly more knolageble than you are as he owned Jordon racing Team who raced sucessully in F1 for a good few years between the late 80's to the mid to late 90's and had Shuie, Barrachelo and a few others when he give them their first entries into F1. Some people that call others Pratt's are usually Pratt's themselves but too ashamed to admitt it.

  10. I predict "the next schumacher will be the champion this season" and that boy is S.Vettel

    It's poll. Not "pole".

  16. Looks like Brawns is in trouble this weekend.

0.9s off the pace of Red Bull. With the Mclaren in front, more of Jenson's points will be taken off. Ruben seem hopelessly at the back.

    Good luck Jenson.

From ferraribeng, on Sat 25 Jul 3:23PM
  17. Nicola...You were probably born yesterday. I mentioned that Alonso will be on Pole in the morning during the last practice, this morning. Eddie predictedit during the qualifiers.

From Semba, on Sat 25 Jul 3:17PM
  18. What is going on with Lewis? He is not the same champion. His car is not competitive? The best driver is the one who has the best car. It seems that car wins, not driver. So this form of F1 shows only who is the best constructor and it should rank only constructors. Drivers should race in same conditions, meaning they should drive the same cars and winner would be really the best driver in the world. It's my explanation why Hamilton is really bad this season. Car is much more important than driver. I think it is correctly to say: "Brown car is the best", then :"Button is the best driver". Maybe he really is, but I don't know it because the car is dominant component of race.

From Svetlana, on Sat 25 Jul 3:13PM
  19. So John F (29) Eddie Jordan is a pratt. This is the guy who predicted that Alonso would be on pole. Did you? And started his own GP team that eventually finished first and second in a Grand Prix. How is your entry coming along?

From Nicola, on Sat 25 Jul 3:04PM
  20. Wtf??? LH was doing well...
    " SABOTAGE"?
