Live Commentary

  1. - Just when it felt like we'd never hear the British national anthem at a race again, eh? But there it is. Thanks for joining us today, and we'll be back for the next race in a month's time in Valencia. See you then!

  2. - Button finished seventh to nab a couple of points Brawn still lead the constructors' championship.

  3. - Hamilton has a bearr hug for Martin Whitmarsh, and what a great sight - two men who have had miserable years in the sport, back on top again.

  4. - Lewis looks utterly thrilled as he jumps out of the car, pumping both fists and slapping the front of his car in delight.

  5. - Raikkonen finished a comfortable second, Webber is in third, Rosberg fourth, and Kovalainen fifth for a resurgent McLaren this weekend.

  6. - Barrichello is still pushing - but he can't quite make it, and is out of the points after all...

  7. 0 HAMILTON TAKES THE CHEQUERED FLAG! IT'S A GREAT WIN FOR THE WORLD CHAMPION!

  8. 1 Lewis Hamilton goes on to his final lap! What a complete performance from the Englishman.

  9. 2 Just a couple of laps to go, and Hamilton, with the race in the bag, is easing off to make sure there are no China-style mishaps.

  10. 3 The last two world champs might have been struggling this season, but they've both put on classy demonstrations of how to manage a car brilliantly here today.

  11. 4 Who would have thought before the start that we'd end up watching Hamilton and Raikkonen leading this race?

  12. 5 Webber is running really well on this final stint on soft rubber, and with Raikkonen easing off might just have a chance of worrying the Finn before the day is up.

  13. 6 Raikkonen and Hamilton seem to have eased off each other - both happy to take their very-welcome podium spots, neither is cutting into the other with their times in this final sector.

  14. 7 Barrichello just can't get in behind Nakajima to have a go at him - and with the only passing spot on the track being at the end of the pit straight, there are only a handful of chances left for the Brazilian.

  15. 8 Barrichello needs that point for Brawn: with the last few championships all having been so close, an extra point here or there could be critical.

  16. 9 Barrichello now desperately tries to pull himself into the points after a mediocre afternoon. He's right behind eight-placed Trulli and ninth-placed Nakajima...

  17. 10 Glock is now sixth, but Button is right behind him and running best on the track at the moment - he might yet pinch another point!

  18. 11 Ahh... Glock, running on fumes, finally has to come in to the pits. That'll be Webber's podium after all - for a minute there we were wondering if Toyota had pulled some sort of miracle off.

  19. 12 With the rest of the field now having stopped Jenson Button finds himself up to seventh place.

  20. 13 Glock is still going here... he's in third, just behind Raikkonen. Is he really going to the end with just one stop?

  21. 14 Barrichello and Button are still yet to have their second stops, but are languishing down in ninth and tenth places respectively.

  22. 15 Mark Webber's pace has been good in this final stint, but it's too late for him to cut in to Raikkonen's third place. Still, after a near-disaster earlier in the race he'll be thrilled to be on the podium.

  23. 16 Alguersuari takes his second stop - and comes back out ahead of Buemi! Beating his team-mate the first time he's driven an F1 car in anger - that's really not a bad effort. Even if that team mate is only Sebastien Buemi...

  24. 17 Hamilton now 17 seconds clear of Raikkonen... he's getting to the point where he he'd almost have the luxury of a third stop should something go wrong.

  25. 18 Jaime Alguersuari has now fallen behind everyone but his team-mate... but he's yet to have his final stop. Still, he can at least say that he's beaten former champ Fernando Alonso in his first race!

  26. 19 We've just been reminded that this is the first time a KERS car will have won a Grand Prix. And given the way the season, and the rule changes, have been going, it'll probably be the last as well...

  27. 20 The Toyotas will be scoring points here today: they've driven long stints, and looked after their rubber in a decent display of racecraft.

  28. 21 It looks like all the surprises might have been sprung for the day now: Hamilton has kept on pushing and how has a 15 second advantage on Raikkonen.

  29. 22 People have often knocked Hamilton's achievements as being down to his technology - but this is a massively impressive performance that reflects huge credit on Stevenage's finest.

  30. 23 Hamilton has not even been on the podium so far this season, and is now set for glory here - barring the sort of accident that took out Damon Hill in 1997 at this race as he tried to earn an unlikely win for Arrows.

  31. 24 And now Hamilton pits - the Brit will be on the softer tyre for the 24 laps remaining of this race. Lewis comes out well in front of Webber! That's left him leading the race after having taken his final stop, and this will be a procession now, surely...?

  32. 25 Kimi Raikkonen comes into the pits - and it's a flawless one, he comes back out in fourth place!

  33. 26 It's a decent pit stop for the Finn, and he's running sixth even after his second stop.

  34. 27 The McLaren crew are still out - and it's Kovalainen who's coming in!

  35. - Button puts in a decent lap and still has half a chance of a decent points finish if the pit stops go his way. Everytone to Glock in sixth is a target.

  36. - Jenson Button has been struggling with tyres all day, but finally seems to be getting a bit more out of his rubber.

  37. 28 Nobody has had their second stop yet... but the crew are out in the McLaren put. Which driver will it be?

  38. 29 Mark Webber has just had a rocket from the pits: get a move on, they're saying, or Lewis Hamilton will be able to pit and still get out in front of you!!

  39. 30 Hamilton keeps on his pace push and is now 7.5 seconds ahead of Raikkonen.

  40. 31 Webber and Kovalainen are glued together still in third and fourth - a perfect demonsration of why they call this course the inland Monaco. There's just no way past for the McLaren man.

  41. - Is there no end to Ecclestone's shamelessness? The F1 moneyman is signing autographs in the pit lane! There's a young lad who'll grow up to be a stockbroker...

  42. 32 Back down the field Sebastien Buemi hasn't been having a good day, and it gets worse as he slides wide off the track.

  43. 33 Another quick one from Hamilyton, and he's gone added a more time to his lead - it's now nearly seven seconds, and the producer celebrates the Brit's performance with a quick shufty at the concerned-looking superstar girlfriend looking on in the pits.

  44. 34 Lews Hamilton was being caught by Raikkonen there for the last few laps - but the Englishman is driving well within himself and simply pushes a bit harder in that last one to increase the lead a bit more.

  45. 35 Kovalainen is giving Webber all sorts of trouble in the battle for third, and Raikkonen and Hamilton are in their own race now.

  46. 36 Nico Rosberg is lapping quickly now, looking solid - and with Webber's tyres now looking very poorly we could see some changes here.

  47. 37 Red Bull have just radioed to Mark Webber that they reckon Kimi's tyres are about to fall off the cliff - and that the Ferrari man needs to make them last 12 more laps!

  48. 38 The producers have just shown Vettel walking sadly down the pit lane from the garage, looking as happy as a Newcastle fan watching Michael Owen's pre-season form for Man Utd.

  49. 39 Hamilton is just taking things steady at the moment: he's a six-second advantage over Raikkonen, with the rest of the field nowhere. But with no championship hopes to worry about, this is all about one thing for Hamilton: winning.

  50. 40 After the shakedown Jenson Button is running ninth, and frankly looking about as threatening as a kitten with a rubber chainsaw.

  51. 41 Vettel has come in and had his problem - dodgy suspension - looked at, but he's still not happy and comes back in. This looks like it... and yes, he drives straight into the garage.

  52. 42 Hamilton's drive is a procession at the moment - something of a shame, as earlier on when he was pulling out daring overtaking manoevres the Hungarian producer kept cutting to slow-mo shots of Nicole Schezi-wotsit jumping up and down!

  53. - Trulli comes into the pits, and rejoins the race... in eighth!

  54. 43 VETTEL HAS A PROBLEM! The Red Bull driver has some sort of major problem, and is just limping round to the pits shouting over the in-car radio that "something is broken! something is broken!" He sounds for all the world like Corporal Jones from Dad's Army... Don't panic, Seb!

  55. 44 Some news of Toro Rosso's super-sub Jaime Alguersuari: the youngest ever F1 driver is doing okay, and is just a second behind team mateSebastien Buemi.

  56. 45 Jenson Button nips in for tyres now, and only Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock are yet to stop.

  57. 46 McLaren keep on badgering Hamilton over the radio to look after his tyres - they're desperate to keep him out there as long as they can...

  58. 47 Jenson Button is running second, but still yet to stop yet... We could be looking at a very British podium if the Brawn long strategy works out!

  59. 48 With all the shaking down in the pits, one thing has become clear: Lewis Hamilton is absolutely cruising in this race now. Can he finally win a race in 2009?

  60. - Webber is likely to face a stop-go penalty for nearly hitting Raikkonen in the pits, we're hearing... And the Red Bull lollipop man, who let his lollipop down early, will be looking for a new job...

  61. 49 Vettel and Kovalainen both come in now - and Red Bull mess up Vettel's fuel hose removal now! They're having a terrible afternoon!

  62. - Quick correction - it was Webber's fuel hose that was the problem, not the tyre. What a mess up for the team...

  63. 50 Leader Lewis Hamilton now comes into the pits for a tyre change, and gets through without incident.

  64. 51 Red Bull's pit crew made a right mess of that, fluffing the tyre change and then almost sending their man careening into the Finn. Raikkonen got out just in front, with Webber right behind - but then the Aussie is overtaken!!

  65. - Raikkonen and Webber come into the pits together! It's a classic race between pit crews... AND THE CARS NEARLY COLLIDE IN THE PIT LANE!

  66. 52 Hamilton is now nearly SIX seconds clear of Webber - he's just put another half second of daylight between himself and the field.

  67. 53 Alonso has officially retured from the race, now - he's citing a water temperature problem for his initial slowness this afternoon. But neglects to mention the slightly bigger issue of his blimming wheel flying off!

  68. 54 Hamilton crosses the line with yet another fastest lap of the race, and he's put another six tenths on top of Mark Webber in second place.

  69. 55 Lewis Hamilton is grabbing this chance with both hands, and with clear track in front of him he's running beautifully and building a big lead.

  70. - Amazing stuff there, and thank goodness nobody was hurt - again - by the flying debris from Alonso.

  71. 56 That will be Alonso's race all but over - a huge disappointment after his qualifying performance. Lewis Hamilton now leads the Hungarian Grand Prix!

  72. - What a sickening moment, after the events of yesterday and of course Henry Surtees's accident last week...

  73. 57 FERNANDO ALONSO HAS LOST A FRONT WHEEL! IT'S BOUNCING WILDLY DOWN THE TRACK AND HE'S ON THREE WHEELS!!!

  74. - DISASTER FOR ALONSO!!!! His wheel hasn't been put on straight and he's pootling round... AND A WHEEL HAS COME OFF!!!!!

  75. 58 ALONSO IS IN THE PITS! The Spaniard has a new set of boots on, and another 20 laps worth of fuel...

  76. 59 We're just getting word that Kimi Raikkonen is to be investigated by stewards after the race - he almost took Vettel out completely. No drive-through penalty, though.

  77. - Back down the field Jenson Button radios in to say that his rear tyres are deteriorating quickly - and that he's losing grip.

  78. 60 Alonso's now holding Hamilton at bay - but the Englishman's lap times are falling off, are his tyres starting to hurt already?

  79. 61 Race leader Alonso is talking to his pits, and they're telling him to fiddle with some fuel pump settings to get the car running better. Seems like there may be some sort of minor problem.

  80. 62 Vettel has been told to save fuel at the moment - he's running in seventh, but isn't out of touch yet. This is becoming a tactical cat-and-mouse game.

  81. 63 Hamilton is down to just 1.6 secs behind Alonso! This is some of his best driving of the year...

  82. 64 Quick run-down of places: Alonso, Hamilton, Webber, Raikkonen, Rosberg, Kovalainen.

  83. 65 Jenson Button is running in eighth place at the moment, but he's really struggling to make anything happen - yet with his longer stint fuel strategy he's not out of this yet.

  84. 66 Hamilton has already pulled out a big lead on Webber and is closing quickly on Alonso. He's just 2.5 secs behind the leader and is lapping half a second quicker!

  85. 67 LEWIS HAMILTON SQUEEZES PAST WEBBER! The reigning F1 champ's miserable season has really improved in the last week or two, as his KERS power lets him whip past Vettel at the end of teh pit straight.

  86. 68 Alonso's light fuel load has helped him pull out a big lead already - probably not a bad move if he can use early clear track to get ahead.

  87. - We're just looking at the replay of the start - it was a proper mess, Lewis Hamilton very nearly jumped into second from the off but got closed out.

  88. 69 Button had found himself in ninth after that critical first corner - but he's overtaken already to get into eighth!

  89. - A horrific start for Sebastien Vettel, though: he's dropped to seventh from second at the start after clipping Raikkonen!!!!!

  90. - Webber managed to nap second place from the start, with Hamilton third and Raikkonen fourth.

  91. 70 AND THEY'RE AWAY!!!! Alonso gets a superb start, hitting the first corner 20 yards clear of the field.

  92. - Jenson Button now lines up on the grid as we get ready for the start. He's got an extra set of tyres in the locker... will it help?

  93. - It's a beautiful day here in Hungary on this trickiest of tracks - Fernando Alonso starts on pole, but in this heat tyre choice will be critical.

  94. - It's been a terrifically sad day for Formula One, but thoughts of Felipe Massa have to be put to one side as the riders head out for the parade lap.

  1. Welcome to Round 10 of the 2009 Formula 1 series - Hungary! Let's get right to the updates. Brawn GP, in an effort to show no favoritism have bonded the cars of Jenson Button and Rubens Barichello together as a single unit. They will be starting in P1.5. Red Bull's Adrian Newey's lastest aero changes make the need for tires obsolete. The design is being protested. Toyota no change. Ferrari sees Filepe Massa joined by Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer after Kimi Raikkonen abruptly left the team for WRC because " they have better ice cream bars". Williams no change. Heiki Kovaleinen is the sole McLaren entry after Lewis Hamilton decided to save his engines and gearboxes for the rest of the season. Renault team principle Flavio Briatore is still hospitalized after his eyebrows spontaneously combusted in the garage destroying both ING-sponsored cars. Both drivers will be in hastily prepared back-up cars. BMW: sadly, no change. Force India no change BUT expecting points with Kimi out of the picture. Finally, Toro Rosso has 3 drivers in 2 cars. Sebastien Bourdais has refused to be fired and managed to wedge himself into the cockpit with new driver Jaime Alguersuari so tightly neither can be removed without damaging the car.
