Live Commentary

  1. - Good last effort from Massa who jumps up one spot into sixth for tomorrow's race. An extraordinary grid for the Italian GP, with Vettel in pole and Hamilton back in 15th. Join us again tomorrow for the main event.

  2. 10' There it is - Vettel is in pole position for the Italian GP. A first for the young driver in only his 22nd GP and a first for his Toro Rosso team.

  3. 9' It's unlikely we'll see anyone improve on their times now as the rain is getting heavier. Have Toro Rosso secured their first ever pole?

  4. 9' Now Webber is up to third and Massa is back in seventh as Hamilton watches all the action from the grid!

  5. 8' Massa is up to fifth and Rosberg up to third, with Bourdais back in fourth now.

  6. 6' Sebastian Vettel in pole! He is four minutes away from his first pole position and the other drivers have it all to do!

  7. 4' Bourdais is up into second as we reach the five minute mark of this pole shootout.

  8. 2' The rain is still falling at Monza as Kovalainen sets the fastest early lap.

  9. 1' The pole position shoot out has started. Massa has a great opportunity here to gain vital ground on Hamilton.

  10. - So Hamilton has failed to make it through to the third session! Also missing out are Kimi Räikkönen, David Coulthard, Giancarlo Fisichella and Robert Kubica. It's drying out a little so Massa, who went through in 10th, could do well in the final session for grid positions.

  11. 15' Hamilton will start the Italian GP in 15th position. Massa has made it through the second session in 10th.

  12. 13' Time is running out for Hamilton. There has been a little blue sky but it's not made any difference to the times. McLaren must hope now that Massa, currently in 10th, is bumped back! This could have a huge impact on the world championship race!

  13. 12' At least Kovalainen is doing well up in second so McLaren will have one driver through to the last session.

  14. 9' Hamilton's difficulties have really gone against the form book as he has been brilliant in his McLaren in the wet this season. Nobody is improving on their times so he could be in real trouble now. 15th looks like his start!

  15. 7' Hamilton completes his lap and is slowest of the 15 cars!! He's right up against it. Intermediate tyres for his outlap could prove a catastrophic mistake!

  16. 5' Raikkonen is having troubles aqua-planing, Hamilton's time has not got him in to the top 10. The young Briton has some work to do here!

  17. 3' Hamilton is out but it looks like he has gone for the wrong tyres! Bordais is going well but Sebastian Vettel has set the fastest lap.

  18. 1' The second qualifying has just started. Another challenging session for the drivers as conditions really are difficult! We will lose another five drivers in this session and doubtless one or two big names!

  19. - Quite a few of the drivers were, understandbly, struggling in the first qualifying and problems continued for Honda, and especially Button. His car is clearly not getting any grip in the wet.

  20. 15' Both Hondas look like they are going to drop out. Button to start on back row of the grid. Also out is Button's team-mate Rubens Barrichello, along with Kazuki Nakajima, Nelson Piquet, Adrian Sutil and Giancarlo Fisichella as the first qualifying stage comes to an end.

  21. 14' Piquet is giving it one last go to remain in this qualifying. He's just inside in 13th place.

  22. 11' Nick Heidfeld is up into second, Hamilton third. Piquet is back in 17th and looks set to miss out.

  23. 9' Rosberg is out for his second lap as Hamilton goes in for a tyre change.

  24. 6' Drivers are starting to come in and change tyres - extreme wets is the order of the day.

  25. 4' Heikki Kovalainen has set the fastest lap. Massa is now up to fifth.

  26. 2' Timo Glock has set the fastest lap so far. We could have one of the big names eliminated from this first stage. Massa is down in 15th. Bourdais is second fastest.

  27. 1' Raikkonen is out on the track for his first lap. Suprised he can see anything through the spray!

  28. - It's still very wet at Monza as the cars get ready for qualifying. This will be a supreme test of the drivers' skill and we all know that Hamilton likes the rain!
