Italian GP - The Race (53 Laps)

Live Commentary

  1. - Kovalainen is second, with Kubica third, Alonso fourth, Heidfeld fifth, Massa sixth and Hamilton in seventh!!

  2. 53/53 VETTEL WINS IT!!! A QUITE REMARKABLE WIN FOR TORO ROSSO!! THE YOUNGEST EVER RACE WINNER IN F1 HISTORY!!

  3. 52/53 Massa is in sixth, ahead of Hamilton in seventh.

  4. 51/53 Vettel's lead over Kovalainen is 11 seconds and surely this is his GP to lose now.

  5. 50/53 Coulthard hits Nakajima and sends him spinning off the track. Debri lies across the track.

  6. 49/53 Four laps to go, with Vettel closing on victory. He would become the youngest driver in F1 history to win if he completes the job. He's just 21.

  7. 46/53 The battle for ninth is between Raikkonen and Piquet. Kimi is going right at him, but Piquet holds him off momentarily.

  8. 45/53 If things stay as they are Hamilton will score two points, but Webber is catching him and could spoil the party.

  9. 44/53 Vettel completes his fastest lap of the race - and his lead extends. What a remarkable performance this has been.

  10. 44/53 Webber is closing on Hamilton - who seems to have lost his mojo for some reason or other.

  11. 42/53 Kovalainen is 11 seconds back from Vettel in second, with Kubica 23 seconds back from the leader.

  12. 41/53 Vettel is putting in a commanding performance here and a maiden Grand Prix victory is within his grasp. His lead over Hamilton in seventh is fully 30 seconds.

  13. 38/53 Massa is in sixth, with Hamilton in seventh - but Hamilton is currently the fastest man on the circuit, so there's hope he can avoid losing his championship advantage. His chances of winning the race are surely gone however.

  14. 37/53 HAMILTON PITS!! Probably best to get it done early. He's back into the race and takes Webber superbly!! What a piece of driving from the championship leader.

  15. 36/53 Vettel pits and will go for intermediates! Hamilton is now relying on rain, because his wet tyres will surely not see him home if the dry weather continues.

  16. 35/53 WEBBER SPINS!! He's back on the track, but down a place after a disastrous first lap out of the pits.

  17. 33/53 Kovalainen into intermediate tyres. The predicted heavy rain has yet to materialise and the drivers are split into those who played safe and those who didn't.

  18. 31/53 Vettel leads from Kovalainen in second, with Kubica third.

  19. 30/53 Massa is in contention here, but only if he can get by with one stop - which seems unlikely.

  20. 29/53 So to summarise! Vettel leads, from Kovalainen in second and Alonso in third.

  21. 28/53 Rosberg next to pit, allowing Kovalainen to move into second. Oh dear!! Mistake from the Williams team and 12 seconds go by before Rosberg gets away.

  22. 27/53 Hamilton trails Vettel by around two seconds, and now he pits. He's in and out in under 10 second, with 92 litres of fuel on board.

  23. 26/53 Vettel has regained his lead. The news is that McLaren are preparing full wets for Hamilton.

  24. 25/53 All change again! Hamilton climbs to second, after taking Rosberg. If Hamilton really is going for a one-stop strategy he could yet win this race.

  25. 22/53 Vettel moves back into the lead as Kovalainen and Massa pit. Raikkonen is in 12th, and trying to pass Heidfeld - but struggling. By of the massed pitting, Hamilton is up to third.

  26. 21/53 Glock takes Alonso for eighth. Back to the overtaking machine that is Hamilton - he's now having a crack at Trulli, and he's in his slipstream. Hamilton takes him, but lets it slip and Trulli is back in front.

  27. 19/53 Kovalainen leads, but he still needs to pit - so that's misleading. Webber is second, with Massa in third and Vettel in fourth.

  28. 18/53 Vettel pits, adding 77 litres of fuel which should last around 23 laps. Hamilton now piles past Alonso into seventh.

  29. 17/53 According to Alonso's radio more rain is expected - and this time it's likely to be heavy. Wet tyres will surely be the order of the day.

  30. 16/53 Jenson Button is down in 17th. Hamilton now into 8th, having nipped past Glock and then Kubica.

  31. 15/53 Timo Glock is next up for Hamilton, and he's battering the Toyota man from every angle. Seriously aggresive stuff from Lewis - Schumacher-esque.

  32. 14/53 Coulthard is now having a crack at Fisichella, and the pair clip each other...Fisichella skids out of the action.

  33. 12/53 Hamilton is now in 10th, having cut across Heidfeld using every inch of a tight bend - riding the inside.

  34. 11/53 The big tyre question is looming large. Surely the teams will make a move sooner rather than later.

  35. 10/53 Hamilton nips inside to take Raikkonen and moves up the field once more. The Englishman is starting to fire here, and in the context of the championship that is a big moment in the race.

  36. 9/53 Hamilton and Fisichella are going at it hammer and tongs. Vettel's lead is now 6.5 seconds from Kovalainen.

  37. 8/53 Glock spins and Vettel loses grip, sliding over a chicane. Lewis Hamilton is miles off the pace, two seconds a lap behind Seb Vettel.

  38. 7/53 After six laps, the race order is this: 1-Vettel, 2-Kovalainen, 3-Webber, 4-Rosberg, 5-Massa, 6-Trulli, 12-Raikkonen, 13-Hamilton.

  39. 5/53 Hamilton runs wide!! He goes over the gravel on the Ascari chicane but rejoins the track unscathed. Let's hope there's no penalty in a random cracking of the FIA whip...

  40. 4/53 For what it's worth, Kimi Raikkonen sets the 'fastest lap' on the first racing lap. He is way down in 13th, however. Sebastian Vettel continues to lead the way.

  41. 3/53 GOOOOO!!!! Vettel leads into the first corner with nobody overtaking - safety first here. Hamilton has lost further ground!

  42. 2/53 Bourdais is away from the pit lane and is charging towards the back of the pack! And the safety car will come in at the end of this lap!

  43. 1/53 So, it's race on - after a fashion - as the safety car leads them around.

  44. - They are off on the formation lap, and Sebastien Bourdais stalls on the grid! Nightmare for the Toro Rosso man! My goodness there's some spray behind the safety car.

  45. - Confirmation: The race WILL start behind the safety car. And, as the rain comes down harder, that seems like the right decision. Shame, though.

  46. - This will be a 53-lap race, not 44 as it says at the top of the page. Sorry about that.

  47. - The safety car is at the front of the grid - a decision will be made on its use right before the race. A light drizzle has just resumed. If it is a 'normal' start to the race it could be mayhem.

  48. - In other news, Ferrari have changed the engine Felipe Massa's car but the Brazilian will not be penalised, the FIA reckon. Engines must usually last for two successive races but new regulations this season allow drivers one penalty-free change each. "No penalty should be incurred this time," said FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer in a statement to the race stewards.

  49. - With just a quarter of an hour to go until race time there is tension on the track. It is not raining, but the track is wet, and no decision has been made yet whether the race will be started behind the safety car.

  50. - Welcome to live coverage of the Italian Grand Prix from Monza!
