  3. - Raikkonen still behind in the championship as he grins on the podium. Kubica and Kovalainen are only there for a second time in their respective careers, while the Finn has been there, done it almost 50 times before.

  4. 0' 1. Raikkonen (Ferrari) 1h31:18.555; 2. Kubica (BMW-Sauber) +19.570; 3. Kovalainen (McLaren) +38.450; 4. Trulli (Toyota) +45.832; 5. Hamilton (McLaren) +46.548; 6. 5. 0' Trulli keeps Hamilton behind him and deserves his fourth-placed finish.

  6. 0' Eight points for Kubica (BMW-Sauber) and six for Kovalainen (McLaren) as they complete the podium.

  7. 0' Raikkonen wins the Malaysian GP for the second time after his victory in 2003.

  8. 1' Raikkonen begins his final lap. Button leaves the track but gets back on!!! He could lose a place.

  9. 2' Just over a second the gap between Trulli and Hamilton, but the latter is running out of track.

  10. 3' Raikkonen will win this easily and take the battle to Hamilton in the drivers' championship stakes.

  11. 4' Alonso is right behind Webber, less than a second between them. They are having a right old battle out there as we come to the last laps.

  12. 5' Trulli keeping the gap respectable though and with five laps left he has every chance of keeping his rival at bay. What a finish this would be for him - fourth. And he's in my fantasy team! But then so is Hamilton. Just don't take each other out boys!!!!!

  13. 6' Trulli will not threaten Kovalainen in third, instead keeping an eye on his rear-view mirror and a certain Lewis Hamilton, who will be happy to get away from Malaysia I expect after this week.

  14. 7' About 20 seconds between first and second, and also between second and third. Nothing risky now for that lot.

  15. 8' Alonso right behind Webber in seventh, who must be sweating - not only because of the heat, but how close he is to winning some points in his unreliable car.

  16. 10' Hamilton now closing behind Trulli. The gap is about five seconds, down from 12 before the last round of stops.

  17. 12' Hamilton in and out in less than nine seconds - and is now ahead of Webber. Fifth position with 12 laps to go - dare McLaren begin to hope for another podium? It would take a mistake by Raikkonen or Kubica. Heidfeld in the BMW has also moved ahead of Webber.

  18. 13' Kubica has stopped and is third, but technically he is still second of course.

  19. 14' Webber slow on his last lap after getting caught up lapping someone - he lost some serious time. With a clean pit-stop Hamilton should take fifth from him.

  20. 16' Trulli into the pits as Sebastien Vettel's Toro Rosso catches fire in the engine at the back and he is forced to get it off the track.

  21. 17' Webber out in 7.5 seconds and comes back out behind Piquet, who is 10th. When Hamilton comes in we will have more of an idea about his chances - can he rejoin ahead of Webber?

  22. 17' If there is a bonus for Hamilton, he is still in the points despite the grid demotion and problem changing tyres. Currently sixth, he has Webber's Red Bull in his sights - and the Aussie comes in for his second pit-stop.

  23. 18' Raikkonen pits a second time and suffers no problems. Kubica leads briefly as the Finn comes out behind him, but will have to stop again of course.

  24. 19' Raikkonen has set the fastest lap again - 1:35.405. That is well over a second quicker than last year's.

  25. 21' You can bet that someone else will slide or spin off the track due to the lack of traction control. Whether we will only have eight or so finishers like in Australia, I doubt - but watch out for another casualty in the points as the tyres wear down...

  26. 22' Hamilton would have been third if he has not had the problem with the wheel gun in the pits.

  27. 23' Massa speaks: "I don't know what happened - I just lost the car." The Brazilian looks rueful.

  28. 24' Better news for Toyota after Glock's retirement. Rosberg has pitted for fuel after his first-lap stop to repair some damage.

  29. 25' Trulli (Toyota) up into fourth now then - is a podium on the cards? He'd have to get through Kubica or Kovalainen first...

  30. 26' MASSA OFF THE TRACK!!! He retires. He lost the car on a long, double right turn and spun off!!!

  31. 27' Hamilton loses the car briefly but manages to regain control of it. Things are not going well for him.

  32. 29' So after everyone has stopped, the state of play in the points looks like this: 1. Raikkonen 2.Massa 3.Kubica 4.Kovalainen 5.Trulli 6.Webber 7.Hamilton 8.Heidfeld

  33. 31' Button's Honda is 11th at present. Rosberg has passed Anthony Hamilton at the back.

  34. 32' A massive 43 seconds between Hamilton and the race leader.

  35. 33' Four seconds between the Ferraris at the front. Raikkonen easing further ahead.

  36. 34' Lewis, now ninth, is bearing down on Webber. Kovalainen and Alonso have both stopped. The only drivers in the top 10 yet to do so are Coulthard and Nelson Piquet Jr.

  37. 35' Kubica is leading, but only because he is yet to stop. He comes in now, out in less than nine seconds and into third again. Hamilton is down in 11th.

  38. 37' Disaster for Lewis!!! The right-front tyres just would not come off and showered him in brake dust... eventually he sped out on soft tyres again - 19.9 seconds the damage!!!

  39. 37' Raikkonen set a race-fastest 1:35.679 lap a couple of circuits ago... that is a lot quicker than Hamilton last year. Speaking of whom - here he comes into the pit-lane...

  40. 38' Raikkonen comes in and is out in less than eight seconds having put on - not personally - another set of hard-compound tyres... and he re-emerges ahead of Massa!!!

  41. 39' Massa into the pits now... 8.5 seconds is pretty quick. Let's hope they remembered to put enough fuel in the car. Heidfeld also in.

  42. 40' Webber pits ahead of Hamilton... 9.8 seconds the time... and rejoins in 12th.

  43. 41' Rosberg suffering again in the race, as he did in qualifying. His Williams props up the grid in 19th.

  44. 42' Massa sets the fastest lap of the race so far, an honour enjoyed at the end of the 2007 GP by Hamilton's McLaren. Alonso won the race from his then rookie team-mate.

  45. 43' Hamilton bearing down on Webber now, lapping quicker than the Australian. He suffers a little lock-up but rescues the car on the corner with minimum fuss.

  46. 44' Good morning if you are waking up with a hangover to join us for this race in Malaysia - it is an interesting one, although don't expect Hamilton to challenge the Ferraris unless something dramatic transpires. The cars are expected to pit round about lap 17, with the leaders to go in first possibly.

  47. 45' Hamilton lapping a tenth of a second slower than the Ferraris, mainly due to the middle sector of the track.

  48. 46' The field settled now, but there will be more incidents to come with the lack of driver aids and of grip on this smooth track surface.

  49. 47' Massa; Raikkonen +1.282; Kubica +8.798; Webber +13.88; Hamilton +15.290; Trulli +16.626.

  50. 49' Reigning GP2 champion Timo Glock has also retired despite a promising qualifying session for Toyota. He also left the race in Melbourne in spectacular fashion.

  51. 50' Bourdais is not the only retirement - Adrian Sutil (Force India) has just run off.

  52. 51' Good news for Red Bull though is that Webber is up in fourth, while Kubica is steady in third in his BMW.

  53. 52' Heidfeld slips past both Alonso and Coulthard as the pair battle side by side... Alonso passes him just, but the Scot was not willing to give an inch.

  54. 54' Kovalainen only made up one place but is now up to seventh ahead of Coulthard and Alonso... the Spaniard, who was one of the two drivers that complained about McLaren yesterday, also passed by Hamilton.

  55. 55' Hamilton also away quickly and up to fifth after the opening corners - he looked to be going wide but kept it on the track - while Heidfeld has dropped right down to 10th. Sebastien Bourdais's Toro Rosso flew off into the gravel. Rosberg has a damaged nose and must stop, but can continue.

  56. 55' The Ferraris away well, Massa holding off Raikkonen at the first chicane... they have not allowed anyone to pass them like they did the McLarens last year.

  57. 56' TO GO GO GO!!!

  58. - The back of the grid assembling after the warm-up lap. We are ready...

  59. - Heidfeld, Alonso and the McLarens are all on softer tyres.

  60. - After them are: 5 Nick Heidfeld (BMW); 6 Mark Webber (Red Bull); 7 Fernando Alonso (Renault); 8 Kovalainen; 9 Hamilton; 10 Timo Glock (Toyota); 11 Jenson Button (Honda); 12 David Coulthard (Red Bull).

  61. - As you probably know, Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen complete an all-Ferrari front row; and after McLaren pair Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton were penalised five places for coasting on the racing line after completing their own qualifying hot lap, Jarno Trulli (Toyota) and Robert Kubica (BMW)on the second row.

  62. - There are 56 laps, all of them strength- and concentration-sapping in the humidity. The drivers will lose litres of fluid over the next hour-and-a-half or so.

  63. - The teams out on the grid are putting the final touches to their set-ups. We are approaching the seven o'clock starting time.

  64. - There is a 20 percent chance of rain in the race - and if it rains it pours in Malaysia... I for one would quite like to see a bit of a monsoon!
