Live Commentary

  1. 8:04 More questions than answers from the final practice session of the weekend: what was the puff of smoke from the Brawn cars? Were the Ferraris taking it easy this morning after proving their early pace? And can Lewis Hamilton wring enough out of his car to get a decent grid spot? We'll see you back here at 10 o'clock for qualifying!

  2. 8:00 That's it for the session: amazingly, there are four different teams in the top four slots for the session. This season just seems to get more and more open as it goes on. A good morning's work for the Toyota's in 4th and 5th, but Brawn are down in 9th and 10th, just ahead of the two McLaren's.

  3. 7:59 Mark Webber nips in at the death with the second-quickest lap, just over a tenth slower than Rosberg.

  4. 7:57 Massa isn't over the line for more than ten seconds when Nico Rosberg trumps him with a 1:35.940 to make him the first man under that 1:36 mark today.

  5. 7:57 More good news for fans of the prancing horse: Felipe Massa puts in an effortless quick lap to go to the top of the tree.

  6. 7:56 Tuning in to the pit lane radio, McLaren tell Lewis Hamilton that he timed his turbo-boost - sorry, 'KERS deployment' - perfectly as he chained together that quick lap.

  7. 7:54 Baricehllo doesn't stay quickest for long: Kimi Raikkonen puts in a flyer that cuts almost two tenths of a second off the day's fastest lap. The Ferraris look superb this week on a circuit that clearly suits them.

  8. 7:53 Just as Lewis crosses the line, the cameras cross over to show Rubens Barrichello's Brawn GP car farting out a puff of smoke just as Button's did earlier. But it's not a bad sign, apparently, because just as his team-mate did earlier, Barrichello sets the fastest lap with a 1:36.519!

  9. 7:51 Hamilton goes third quickest! That's an impressive performance in a car that's clearly not up to scratch yet: he's two tenths off Button's time...

  10. 7:49 Lewis Hamilton is back outon track just as we approach the 10 minutes to go... He's 12th fastest at the moment but is now on his flyer.

  11. 7:47 Robert Kubica puts in a good lap, keeping things neat throughout and ending up just two hundredths slower than Button. He keeps pedal to the metal for a second consecutive flying lap and has just put in the fastest first sector.

  12. 7:46 Most of the drivers are sitting in their cars at the moment waiting for the right moment to go out for another session. Given the heat - 35 degrees, 90 per cent huimidity - it's unsurprising that some of the teams have rigged up air conditioning tubes to pump in to the drivers' cockpits. They look a little like those things that come out of the back of the tumble dryer.

  13. 7:43 A bit of a worrying sign for Brawn, as Jenson Button's cars spluts out a big cloud off smoke while he's on a flying lap. Let's hope it's nothing serious... It certainly didn't impede his pace, though: Button posts a 1:36.541 to go quickest so far!

  14. 7:37 Just as Raikkonen crosses the line Nick Heidfeld has put in a storming first sector - and the diminutive German hooks up the rest of the lap, despite a slight wobble on the penultimate corner, to shave almost half a second off the quickest lap, with a 1:37.026.

  15. 7:36 Raikkonen looks like he's going to put in the fastest lap... but no! He's just 0.0004 slower than Rosberg.

  16. 7:34 He's quickest in the first sector...

  17. 7:34 Kimi Raikkonen is out doing a fast lap now. Let's see if he can reassert the Ferrari dominance we've seen this weekend.

  18. 7:28 A flurry of activity and a blast of sunshine warms things up and brings Nico Rosberg floating to the top of the pile with a 1:37.490 - but nobody is pushing it yet, and that quickest time is still a couple of seconds shy of Raikkonen's quickest lap yesterday.

  19. 7:18 Great news for Brawn GP fans: Button has just gone quickest with 1:38.60, while team-mate Rubens Barichello is right behind him.

  20. 7:15 Felipe Massa has put in a 1:39.174 as Lewis Hamilton goes out on track too. don't know what's going on with last year's champion, but he cruised around that lap over 10 seconds off the pace. Maybe he's out for a Sunday drive.

  21. 7:10 The sky seems to have cleared a bit now and at last we have a few people otu there on the track; the pace isn't setting things alight, though: fastest so far is Adrian Sutil who's put in a 1:39.37. That's several seconds slower than what we saw yesterday.

  22. 7:00 It's Saturday morning, and it's the final practice session of the weekend in Malaysia. There looks like there's rain in the air at Sepang, so we're not sure if, when or how much action we'll get in the next hour or so.
