Live Commentary

  1. - Thanks for joining us today for what's been an intriguing race. A real shame that the weather ruined things - though Brawn GP won't see it that way! We'll be back in a couple of weeks for the Chinese Grand Prix. See you then!

  2. 11:57 Fresh controversy! The order has been changed as the race result has been revised back to the exact moment that the red flag was shown. But now Nick Heidfeld is second, and Timo Glock is relegated to third - while Lewis Hamilton is back down to seventh instead of sixth!

  3. 11:55 What an amazing start to the season for Button. Just a couple of months ago it seemed that his F1 career might be over as Honda pulled out of the sport; now, he's the top dog in the sport!

  4. 11:54 IT'S OFFICIAL - the race is over, and Jenson Button is the winner! It's only half-points for the championship front-runner, but the Brit won't care.

  5. 11:50 The race is over! With the 10-minute re-start warning that's required, we'll be over the two-hour mark at that point. That's a victory for Jenson Button, although the strangest one of his career for certain.

  6. 11:48 Glock and Toyota are today's tactical geniuses: the choice of intermediate tyres was inspired, and in retrospect seems so obvious. With rain not guaranteed to fall they were the best half-way house; they continued to be so while the rain was light. And when it really rains in Malaysia it was always going to be so heavy that the race would have to be stopped.

  7. 11:44 Kimi Raikkonen has packed it in for the day and won't restart even if the race does. He was way back down the field after that premature jump to full wets backfired spectacularly.

  8. 11:42 It's getting even more confusing now as the two-hour race time limit gets closer and closer - and with a 10-minute warning needed for any restart, it seems almost inconceivable now that the race will restart. Yet at the same time, the rain has eased right off now and it looks like they could easily drive at the moment.

  9. 11:38 Everyone from third place downwards has been lapped now, such was the domination of Button and Glock at the start of the field. If the race re-starts, they'll need to unlap themselves by trawling round behind the safety car.

  10. 11:37 It sounds like a re-start is being arranged - but now the drivers are all over the place!

  11. 11:35 "Nobody wants to see half points - apart from anything it'd confuse the media," says Eddie Jordan, and it's a good point. I'm not sure if our system would cope with halves in the drivers' championship table.

  12. 11:33 Latest forecast is for another sustained downpour within another half hour; at the moment it's a sort of middling English rain rather than tropical stuff.

  13. 11:31 There's talk of it being too dark to race now - though the race director Charlie Whiting is reportedly keen to try and get the race to three-quarters distance.

  14. 11:30 "If it restarts it'll still be under the safety car for a long time," says Patrick Head of the Williams team.

  15. 11:26 The big winner here is Nick Heidfeld: the BMW man benefitted from a bit of luck and a bit of good timing, mostly through that large fuel load he took on. He needed only one stop - while most of the rest of the field took four - and looks like he'll get third place!

  16. 11:22 The drivers that have been interviewed want to pack up and go home - but the race director is obliged to get things re-started if at all possible.

  17. 11:17 The race hasn't gone three-quarter distance, so if it doesn't re-start then it'll be half-points all-round based on the cars' positions when the race was stopped.

  18. 11:14 Webber, in eighth, is interviewed at track side and says that things shouldn't restart since the cars just aren't designed for the conditions, and with the safety car having to go so slowly the tyres lose even more temperature.

  19. 11:13 The rain keeps coming down; latest reports say it'll be half an hour or so more of it at least, but with the local time already quarter-past six there just isn't much daylight left.

  20. 11:12 Webber looks like he's trying to canvas opinions about having the race stopped.

  21. 11:10 This is odd - Mark Webber is out of his car and is walking over for a chat with Lewis Hamilton. From the look on his face as he walks away a minute later, it was not a social call.

  22. 11:09 It's still throwing it down, but there is bright sky on the horizon. These tropical downpours don't usually last that long, so it looks like we'll be back in action at some point.

  23. 11:05 It's Button-Glock-Heidfeld-Trulli at the start of the field, but all bets are off for the moment as it's possible that the rain may not even re-start, given the amount of daylight left in Malaysia. Lewis Hamilton is in sixth as things stand.

  24. 11:02 THERE'S A RED FLAG! The race has been stopped for the conditions, which are truly atrocious. The cars will line up on the grid behind the safety car and hang around to see what happens.

  25. 11:01 What a killjoy that stupid safety car is - then again, there is about 2 inches of water on the main straight.

  26. 11:00 Thick standing water on the track now, and the safety car is coming out. That'll close things up.

  27. 10:59 Button comes in for wet tyres now - and comes back on to the track in the lead!

  28. 10:58 Fisichella is first casualty of the weather - but now Vettel is out too!

  29. 10:57 Lightning has hit the grandstand as it begins to pour! It's all kicking off!

  30. 10:57 IT'S CHUCKING IT DOWN!!! Glock's change is perfectly-timed!!!

  31. 10:56 Button has closed the gap on Glock with those fresh intermiediates, and goes past him - but Glock pits and goes for full wets at what seems the perfect time!

  32. 10:55 Glock leads the Grand Prix! That inspired bit of weather voodoo from Toyota has given them thje control of the race and a 3.3 second lead over Button. But now at last the rain starts to fall more heavily!

  33. - Now Jenson Button comes in to change his tyres as well; Glock could go in to the lead here!

  34. 10:53 Barrichello and Trulli both pit on the same lap, and both take intermediates before going out to continue their battle.

  35. 10:52 Hamilton has gone for Intermediates as well, while Barrichello slides wide to lose time on those wet tyres of his.

  36. 10:51 Nico Rosberg is pitting and takes intermediates; meanwhile Glock is charging through the field on his intermediates.

  37. 10:49 Barrichello takes Trulli to go in to third place, while Button is 18 seconds clear of Rosberg.

  38. 10:47 Lewis Hamilton has an engine problem it seems - but the man making the move is Timo Glock, who is on intermediates instead of wets which makes him the quickest man out there.

  39. 10:46 The Red Bulls are both looking good now as Vettel looks like he's doing well. He takes Heidfeld and is up to 11th.

  40. 10:45 Hamilton has taken Webber again at the end of the straight, but then Webber's superior grip and downforce helps the Red Bull man pour past the world champion.

  41. 10:44 Webber runs wide after concentrating too much on his mirrors! Hamilton can take him!

  42. 10:43 Hamilton powers past Mark Webber on the start-finish straight, but the Aussie goes back past - they're having a hell of a battle here, it's great stuff!

  43. 10:41 The rain is still dribbling rather than pouring; and Kimi Raikkonen's premature rain tyres have been torn to pieces already by the dry track. He'll need a new set!

  44. 10:40 Hamilton and Alonso both managed to rejoin the track after their slides, and now Lewis has full wets on and is running in sixth place!

  45. 10:40 Button is in for wet tyres! And there's a queue of drivers following them in now!

  46. 10:39 The rain is here at last! Alonso slides off as he makes his way round to the pits, and Hamilton has slid off too....

  47. 10:38 The sky is darker than coal, but still there's no more than the odd spot. Raikkonen's gamble looks like a disaster at the moment... unless a huge downpour means nobody else can stay on.

  48. 10:37 Button has snatched the lead of the race after that extended first stint. Rosberg is second, Trulli third and Barrichello fourth.

  49. 10:36 Vettel cruises past Raikkonen - the Finn just can't keep up the pace with those tyres on, and if it goes another lap then he'll look very, very silly indeed... Barrichello comes in now for his stop, and he gets slicks as well. No rain, and the track is still dry.

  50. 10:35 Button comes in for his stop - he puts on slicks, but then comes out in 2nd place! Only Barrichello is ahead of him, but he's the only man not to have stopped yet.

  51. 10:34 What a gamble for Ferrari! Raikkonen is on full wets and unless things get rainy soon he'll end up with egg on his face...

  52. 10:33 Back in the field Felipe Massa's pit radio tells him that the rain is holding off which will help them - and now the Ferraris have the wet tyres out! Raikkonen in in and is getting wet tyres!!!!

  53. 10:32 With the rain having held off it looks like advantage Brawn: the team of the moment have picked out a dream strategy, and now with clear track ahead of him Button can pull out a gap.

  54. 10:31 It's really, really gloomt now, surely the rain must start soon. Now Trulli pulls in, and Button is the current leader!

  55. 10:30 Trulli's team-mate Timo Glock has pitted now, and Mark Webber pulls in too from sixth place.

  56. 10:28 Trulli is the new leader, and he's keeping Button at bay comfortably. That rain is still holding off... could it have deceived everyone?

  57. 10:27 Rosberg pits! That's a lap earlier than had been thought, and if that rain comes soon then he's completely stuffed - although his blistering pace at the start of this race means that he's re-joined in fourth.

  58. 10:26 Rosberg is expected to pit in two or three laps' time; he's now 3.3 seconds clear of Trulli, who is 0.6 ahead of Button. Hamilton is now in ninth place following Vettel's stop.

  59. 10:25 Sebastian Vettel comes in to the pits already! That light fuel load of his has run out already, and with rain still yet to arrive the gamble has not paid off... The Red Bull man falls back to 17th at the moment.

  60. 10:23 Now Mark Webber has taken Alonso - but Alonso takes him back - yet Webber goes through again - but now Alonso KERSes his way past - only for Webber to go through again!

  61. 10:21 Button and Rosberg are trading fastest laps of the race at the moment, while Raikkonen has pulled nearly two seconds clear of Alonso in the space of a single lap.

  62. 10:20 Raikkonen takes Alonso to snatch fifth place as that heavy Renault still struggles to keep up.

  63. 10:18 Hamilton's pit radio give him instructions - less controversial ones this time - that the rain will be coming in 10 more minutes.

  64. 10:16 Trulli has pulled away a little from Button now - while back on the track Vettel and Hamilton goes past Heidfeld as the German slides wide on to the grass.

  65. 10:14 Button has closed the gap on Jarno Trulli to inside a second - he's doing well trying to undo that atrocious start, but meanwhile Nico Rosberg is the quickest man out there and has pulled out almost a three-second lead on the field.

  66. 10:12 Raikkonen is all over the back of Alonso now, as Vettel hunts down ninth-placed Nick Heidfeld. That light fuel load is really helping him scythe through the field.

  67. 10:11 Latest weather report: rain expected in just over 10 minutes...!

  68. 10:10 Lewis Hamilton is overtaken by Sebastian Vettel, and the Red Bull man goes in to 10th place as a result.

  69. 10:09 Barrichello gets past Alonso, gets re-taken at the next corner, then makes the move stick on the start-finish straight.

  70. 10:07 Rosberg's start was absolutely extraordinary, while Robert Kubica is out with engine trouble: he didn't even get away on the start line.

  71. 10:06 Button has the bit between his teeth now, and his team-mate Barrichello is all over the back of Alonso. The Renault man is carrying a lot more fuel and is struggling to keep pace.

  72. 10:05 Button takes Alonso neatly to make it in to third place!

  73. 10:03 Nico Rosberg rockets off the line to take the lead - and Button drops to fourth from the start! Trulli is second, Alonso third, then the two Brawns followed by Raikkonen - and Kovalainen is off the track already! More trouble for McLaren!

  74. 10:03 The cars are lined up... lights on... and it's GO!

  75. 10:02 At the other extreme is BMW's Nick Heidfeld, who has enough fuel on board to just about pull off a one-stop strategy.

  76. 10:00 The parade lap gets under way. Several drivers are hoping for rain, chief among them being Sebastian Vettel who has the lightest fuel load in the field. If it comes down, then everyone will need to come in anyway so he'll be able to splash and dash.

  77. 9:57 The drivers are in their cars and on the grid - and it's still blisteringly hot and sunny overhead... though the charcoal clouds on the horizon are looking ever larger. It's 10 seconds a lap between wet and dry tyres, so they'll need to change tyres if it rains at all.

  78. 9:45 We're a quarter of an hour or so from the off in Malaysia - and there's potential chaos about to unfold with the news that a huge tropical downpour is expected to hit in about half an hour.

Hamilton got 6th place just as Glock got 2nd. Got it now? Does that give you something to think about?
Actually, FIA was concerned that with a wet track, Hamilton could move further up and, who knows, may win it all. That's why they had to red flag the race.
Instead of keeping the drivers in their respective position when the safety car came out, they opted for their positions two to three laps earlier, when Hamilton was still running 7th and Glock 3rd.
