Live Commentary

  1. - Join us at 13:00 UK time for LIVE commentary on qualifying from Monaco!!

  2. - The drivers practise their starts on the grid. The final times are on the left-hand side.

  3. 0' Alonso has the top time - well done to him, and well done to Renault, whose staff your commentator had the pleasure of meeting last week. They were very forthcoming and hospitable, if you were wondering.

  4. 0' The clock has run out but we will have to wait to see if anyone is out on a hot lap...

  5. 1' Kovalainen third now ahead of Barrichello, Massa, Raikkonen and Hamilton - who is now seventh.

  6. 1' Raikkonen's use of KERS in the tunnel seems to be working out for him; perhaps it is not a waste after all here...

  7. 2' Alonso into the lead with 1:15.164!! A minute and a half remaining...

  8. 3' Raikkonen looking good, bettering the P1 time in the first sector... but Hamilton is lagging ahead of him and his hot lap is ruined.

  9. 4' Alonso has gone second fastest for Renault. He is also on the super-softs.

  10. 5' Barrichello four-hundredths up on Button after two sectors... but his time of 1:153.286 is only enough for third.

  11. 7' Both Ferraris have super-softs now as they seek a tilt at the top spot, something to make the Scuderia's loyal band of followers feel good.

  12. 9' Button lays down the challenge to Raikkonen and Hamilton: 1:15.233 the leading time.

  13. 11' Button has been in to change his harder tyres to super-softs on the BGP 001. He begins a hot lap.

  14. 13' Raikkonen into P1, his 1:15.382 just seven-thousands quicker than Hamilton's best.

  15. 14' Raikkonen and Massa third: this really is an important weekend for Ferrari as well as McLaren.

  16. 15' Red Bull star Sebastian Vettel up to fifth.

  17. 17' Barrichello second after closing to within two-tenths of a second of the leader.

  18. 18' Hamilton quicker again: 1:15.389 his best now.

  19. 20' Hamilton improves to 1:15.546. The BMWs bottom of the list again - what has happened to them this season?

  20. 22' Button in the top six now with 1:16.333 - behind Hamilton, Barrichello, Raikkonen, Massa and Rosberg.

  21. 24' Heikki Kovalainen seventh for McLaren. He is looking more promising in Monaco - but a second in arrears of his colleague at the top of the tree.

  22. 26' Barrichello second on a time of 1:15.832 after Fisichella almost crashes his Force India into the barriers - he did well to rescue it.

  23. 28' Check out our team and drivers profiles here.

  24. 30' Barrichello goes fourth in the Brawn after Rosberg takes third. World Championship leader Brit Button ninth behind Red Bull's Mark Webber.

  25. 32' Raikkonen second on the timesheets and his team-mate Massa, now out on track directly behind the Finn, fourth.

  26. 34' Hamilton ran off track in between those two quick laps: as Robert Kubica left the track at the chicane to let him past, the Briton also went off for some reason. No damage done to either the BMW or the MP4-24. And Lewis improves again to 1:15.622.

  27. 36' Hamilton through in 1:16.791 and two minutes later he lays down a 1:16.228 to further extend his lead over Rosberg, who has a 1:16.826 to his name.

  28. 38' Alonso second quickest in his Renault R29 before Rosberg now heads the list with 1:17.476.

  29. 39' Lewis Hamilton - second in second practice - is now top dog with 1:17.478.

  30. 41' Sebastien Bourdais and Felipe Massa are the only cars not out yet.

  31. 43' After another improvement Trulli takes P1 on a 1:17.995.

  32. 45' Fisichella improves to 1:18.855. Most of the drivers are on track now.

  33. 47' Glock through in 1:20.242 for P1, before Trulli then Fisichella beat it - 1:19.913 the top time.

  34. 48' Race control have warned the teams that anyone who cuts the chicane exit of Swimming Pool could be liable for penalties. The outside wheels must be on the track.

  35. 50' Robert Kubica, Timo Glock and Fisichella begin to do battle in the timing stakes: the latter's 1:22.045 the best at present.

  36. 52' Rubens Barrichello, Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso have all completed installation laps.

  37. 53' To read all the reaction to the first practice sessions on Thursday, click here: Drivers: 'Getting harder' for Button

  38. 55' Kimi Raikkonen emerges in his Ferrari. "Maybe we cannot yet fight for wins, but here we can fight for good points," he says in today's Independent. There is a palpable feeling among the less-well performing teams that Monaco could be the place to turn the form book on its head.

  39. 57' Nico Rosberg topped second practice; to read both reports click here.

  40. 60' Giancarlo Fisichella is the first man out on track in his Force India.

  41. - This final session ahead of qualifying is only an hour long.

  42. - The Formula One paddock has had its day fraternising with scantily-clad ladies on Monaco yachts - and we are back with final free practice. Brum brum!!
