Live Commentary

  1. 10:30 So, first blood to Ferrari. They lead the way by over half a second. A promising start for them. We're back at 1pm for more fun and games - see you then.

  2. 10:24 The big boys seem to be satisfied with their efforts this morning and are back in the pits. Sebastian Vettel is out there, but the German is struggling back in 20th place.

  3. 10:17 Just to let you know that we're back for another hour and a half of this at 1pm. Why are these sessions so long? Nobody knows. But we'll be with you all the way. The early signs, however, are that Ferrari look like tough cookies.

  4. 10:09 Jenson Button is on the team radio. He's a bit fuzzy, but it sounds like he's prattling on about understeer. 'Jens', as we're supposed to call him, is 10th at the minute.

  5. 10:02 Massa loses it again! Honestly, that boy's a liability. That said he is second, just five hundredtghs 14:649, the Brazilian five hundredths adrift.

  6. 09:58 Timo Glock seems to have a gravel magnet in his Toyota. He runs wide and sprays shingle all over the track. That won't help anyone.

  7. 09:54 Felipe Massa spins! He just overcooks a left-hander, but the run-off areas at Barcelona are massive and he doesn't even make it to the gravel.

  8. 09:49 Raikkonen goes quickest with a 1:20.997. Well done him.

  9. 09:47 The weather is pretty nice in Catalonia this morning. Air temperature 20C, track temp 26C, no wind, 49 percent humidity and mainly blue skies.

  10. 09:44 Hamilton remains quickest with 1:21.192, but Kimi Raikkonen is out on track for his first flier.

  11. 09:36 Jarno Trulli spins at the end of the straight and ends up facing the wrong way on a large red sponsor's logo. He keeps the engine running and is soon on his way again.

  12. 09:33 1:21.484 for Lewis Hamilton, who goes quickest so far, three tenths ahead of his team-mate Heikki Kovalainen. But it hardly needs to be said that it's early days yet.

  13. 09:28 Hurrah! Kasuke Nakajima goes for a hot lap! Not before time. Meanwhile Nico Rosberg's brake balance indicator is not working. Which isn't a problem as he's in the pits. 1:24.389 for Nakajima.

  14. 09:16 Nothing is happening. Absolutely nothing. Nobody has been on track for a good 10 minutes. It's not a great crowd at Montmelo. Bear in mind that Fernando Alonso is hardly setting the world alight, plus Spain has two races this year. We'll let you know when the action resumes...

  15. 09:02 Both Renaults are out on the circuit, while Lewis Hamilton has just done an out lap that happened also to be an in lap.

  16. 09:00 Welcome to LIVE coverage of the first Friday practice from Barcelona! It's a 90-minute session - we'll be following it all the way.
