Live Commentary

  1. 66/66 Kimi Raikkonen wins! A textbook victory for the world champion. It is secodn for Felipe Massa and a well-earned podium for Lewis Hamilton in third. Robert Kubica, Mark Webber, Jenson Button, Kazuki Nakajima and Jarno Trulli complete the points.

  2. 66/66 Last lap! This is a cakewalk for Kimi Raikkonen.

  3. 64/66 Three laps to go and Lewis Hamilton's quest to nab seconds looks set to end in disappointment.

  4. 63/66 The only interesting battle remaining is the dice for last place, but it's a good one. Coulthard finally manages to duck up the inside out Sato, who graciously makes way.

  5. 61/66 We jumped the gun when we said Sato had retired a few laps ago. He is just going very slowly indeed. David Coulthard is going four seconds a lap quicker than the Super Aguri man and is looking to get past him into 12th.

  6. 59/66 Great news from McLaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh, who says he expects Heikki Kovalainen to race in Istanbul next weekend and that there is no serious injury.

  7. 58/66 Stewards will have a look at that incident between Glock and Coulthard after the race, which could spell bad news for the German.

  8. 57/66 Lewis Hamilton has closed to within 1.6 seconds of Felipe Massa. But he'll struggle to get past...

  9. 55/66 Heidfeld outdrags Fisichella down the straight and he is up into ninth.

  10. 53/66 Now David Coulthard loses his real left tyre! He collided with Glock and you have to say the Briton knew nothing about that.

  11. 51/66 Hamilton is unable to get out in front of Massa after his second stop and the Briton will have to make do with third place. Not a bad result all things considered.

  12. 50/66 Heikki Kovalainen is being airlifted to a hospital to the northwest of Barcelona. He is still conscious but there must be injuries there.

  13. 48/66 Raikkonen is safely in and out for his second stop. He is now pretty much home free.

  14. 47/66 Felipe Massa is in for his second stop. Hamilton now has a chance to put the hammer down before his next stop.

  15. 45/66 Nick Heidfeld is taking huge chunks of time out of Timo Glock in front of him. A points finish may not be out of the question for him either.

  16. 43/66 Takuma Sato is also out, leaving just 12 runners. Jenson Button is one place away from getting a point pretty much by default.

  17. 42/66 Another one bites the dust. Nico Rosberg's Williams blows up. The good news is he is on the start-finish straight and can just vault the wall and walk back to the pits.

  18. 40/66 Lewis Hamilton is really gunning it. He is faster than Massa and going all out for second place. The gap behind Raikkonen remains 5.9 seconds but he is closing on the Brazilian.

  19. 38/66 Race order: 1-Raikkonen, 2-Massa #plus;3.4, 3-Hamilton #plus;5.7, 4-Kubica #plus;6.9, 5-Webber #plus;15.5, 6-Trulli #plus;19.4, 7-Rosberg #plus;23.5, 8-Nakajima #plus;27.2.

  20. 37/66 Alonso is still milking the fans' applause, giving away various bits of kit. He seems in reasonable spirits.

  21. 36/66 Rubens Barrichello is out after that wing incident. He is clearly unhappy with his team over that.

  22. 34/66 Fernando Alonso is out! Disappointment for the home crowd, as their hero's engine expires. He gets a great ovation, but he is out from fifth place.

  23. 33/66 That is pretty unlucky for Heidfeld. He has a 10-second stop/go (not a drive-through, apologies) penalty and comes out 16th and last. Bummer.

  24. 31/66 McLaren now have a decision whether Lewis Hamilton's car is safe. If they think there could be a repeat of the Kovalainen incident they might retire the Briton.

  25. 30/66 McLaren say Heikki Kovalainen is conscious and stable, which is good news although it doesn't really tell us a lot we didn't know.

  26. 29/66 We're back under way! The safety car goes in, and a reminder of race order. 1-Raikkonen, 2-Massa, 3-Hamilton, 4-Kubica, 5-Heidfeld, 6-Alonso, 7-Webber, 8-Trulli. But remember Heidfeld still has a penalty to serve.

  27. 28/66 Kovalainen gives the crowd the thumps-up as he is stretchered off. Something broke on the left at the front as he turned. As the car is lifted away, you can see daylight through the floor at the front.

  28. 27/66 Barrichello managed to do the damage right as he was leaving the pits! The wing finally comes away! But he'll have to come back in for more tyres and another wing.

  29. 27/66 Huh? Rubens Barrichello has managed to dislodge his front wing under the safety car. How has he done that? It is now dragging under the front of his car and is rubbing against his tyres.

  30. 26/66 Kovalainen is still in his car. The incident looked much like Michael Schumacher's at Silverstone a few years back that resulted in a broken leg. Let's hope it is not as serious. Pit lane now open.

  31. 25/66 Heidfeld is forced to pit or else he will run out of juice! The BMW had no option, but he will now incur a drive-through penalty.

  32. 24/66 The safety car is out after that Kovalainen incident. Nobody is allowed to pit as yet.

  33. 23/66 A big off for Heikki Kovalainen. The back end of his McLaren is protruding from a tyre wall. His steering breaks on a right-hander and he ploughs into the barrier. Fingers crossed he is OK.

  34. 22/66 Hamilton and Kubica pit on the same lap and it will be scramble to see who gets out first... Hamilton does it with realtive eases. Which means about six or eight car lengths.

  35. 22/66 Raikkonen pits now, which means Lewis Hamilton leads the race for the time being. But in real terms he is probably third.

  36. 21/66 Ha! We shouldn't really advertise the competition, but Martin Brundle has just described McLaren's crummy pit position as "among the favelas".

  37. 20/66 Felipe Massa pits and rejoins in eighth place. 26 laps of fuel have gone in, although you have to wonder how accurate those measurements are..

  38. 19/66 Anthony Davidson says he retired because a stone punctured his radiator. That gravel was on the track after Piquet's off, so hard luck on the Super Aguri man.

  39. 18/66 Right then, the boffins reckon Alonso has taken on 31 laps worth of fuel. Definitely a two-stop strategy then.

  40. 17/66 Now Alonso comes in! It's a 9.3 second stop, quite a lot of fuel going in. He could be set for a two-stopper. He returns to the race in 11th.

  41. 15/66 This is an impressive run from Alonso, who still shows no sign of coming in for an early stop. That bonkers fin on the back of his car is clearly making all the difference.

  42. 13/66 Well, if Raikkonen's won this, there should at least be a decent battle for podium places. Massa, Alonso, Hamilton and Kubica will all fancy their chances of getting on a step of some kind later this afternoon.

  43. 11/66 Kimi Raikkonen's lead is now up to three seconds, with the Finn having just set a fastest lap of 1:22.0. Put this one in the books - the world champ is going to win.

  44. 10/66 Goodnight Anthony Davidson. Another retiree.

  45. 9/66 Raikkonen is running about half a second faster than Hamilton at the minute. Piquet is also out.

  46. 8/66 Another collision! This time between Piquet and Bourdais. The Frenchman ambles back into the pits and has his nosecone replaced, but his suspension looks pretty dinged up and that looks like his race over.

  47. 6/66 Off goes Nelson Piquet, wide into the gravel on a left-hander. He returns to the track but is pretty much dead last.

  48. 5/66 It's a Ferrari one-two at present, although Fernando Alonso is right on Massa's tail. The Spaniard is clearly running with a low fuel load.

  49. 4/66 Britwatch: 4-Hamilton, 13-Button, 16-Coulthard, 19-Davidson.

  50. 3/66 The safety car will come in at the end of the lap. That incident involved Adrian Sutil of Force India and Toro Rosso's Seb Vettel. David Coulthard was lucky to escape unscathed.

  51. 2/66 Yellow flag!! One of the Force India cars spins and the luckless Sebastian Vettel runs into it! yet another first-lap incident for the German! The safety car is out.

  52. 1/66 GOOOOOO!!!! Hamilton is up from fifth to fourth, while Massa gets to second ahead of Alonso. Raikkonen leads.

  53. - Alonso goes off on the warm-up lap!! He was wiggling around trying to warm his tyres and he ends up going over the grass!

  54. - They are off on the warm-up lap. We're under way any second. Some boos for Lewis Hamilton as he took to the grid, but not racially motivated.

  55. - You can see the grid on the left - Lewis Hamilton is on the third row with Ferrari looking very strong indeed.

  56. - Welcome to LIVE coverage of the Spanish Grand Prix from Barcelona!
