Live Commentary

  1. - Join us at 13:00 UK time for full coverage of qualifying from the Circuit de Catalunya!

  2. 0' The chequered flag is out and that comfirms the Ferrari one-two. Things are looking up for the embattled prancing horse.

  3. 1' Raikkonen goes second and this represents something of a statement of intent from Ferrari.

  4. 2' 1:20.553 for Massa, as his soft tyres and light fuel load allow him to record the fastest lap of the weekend!

  5. 4' Just a few minutes to go. 1-Glock, 2-Button, 3-Massa, 4-Kovalainen, 5-Hamilton, 6-Raikkonen, 7-Webber, 8-Barrichello.

  6. 7' BMW have got Nick Heidfeld's car back in the garage and they have only two hours to fix it before qualifying. A race against time...

  7. 10' Ferrari are third and fifth at the moment and things could finally be looking up for the Scuderia, who are still pointless but have a superb record at Barcelona. Spanish GP stats and history

  8. 11' Very good from Button, who manages 1:21.466 on hard tyres.

  9. 12' 1:21.377 for Glock - even faster from the German who is enjoying the use of some soft tyres out there.

  10. 14' Timo Glock goes fastest! He clocks a 1:21.419 just after Lewis Hamilton posts his best lap of the day.

  11. 17' Rubens Barrichello's 1:21.906 is the best lap of the day. Then Raikkonen, Vettel and Massa.

  12. 20' A slightly sheepish Nick Heidfeld strides into the BMW garage. He won't be a popular man after his mistake.

  13. 22' As things stand: 1-Massa 2-Raikkonen 3-Buemi 4-Barrichello 5-Vettel 6-Hamilton 7-Webber 8-Alonso. Jenson Button is 14th.

  14. 26' Brawn are helping to promote the new Terminator film and havea massive robot in their garage. You can't help but feel the big fella is getting in the way slightly.

  15. 29' Yellow flag. Nick Heidfeld has gone off on turn 12 and ploughed into the advertising hoardings. An odd place to go off, but the driver is fine and the BMW does not look to be in particularly bad shape, wonky front wing and hanging wheel aside.

  16. 31' Impressive performance from Sebastien Buemi so far to go third. Lewis Hamilton is a decent sixth.

  17. 34' Giancarlo Fisichella spins his Force India! No damage done but the Italian will have to take it easy with all types of grass and mud on his tyres.

  18. 37' The drivers are reeling off a whole host of flying laps, with Felipe Massa setting the pace now - 1:22.638.

  19. 42' 1:23.741 for Kubica who is the fastest man. A lot of drivers are putting hard tyres through their paces. Interesting to see who gambles on them in qualifying.

  20. 46' We have plenty of photos from the Circuit de Catalunya - click the link to see them in lovely slideshow format. Spanish GP pictures

  21. 49' Timo Glock is the fastest man on the track with a 1:24.937, but that is three seconds slower than the fastestdrivers were clocking yesterday.

  22. 54' And these drivers have new gearboxes: Both McLarens, Massa, both BMWs, both Renaults, both Toro Rossos, Webber, Rosberg, both Force India, Rosberg and Nakajima. So nearly everyone, then.

  23. 56' Felipe Massa comes out of the garage for Ferrari. The following drivers have a new engine today: Kubica, Trulli, Glock, Bourdais, Buemi, Rosberg, Nakajima.

  24. 58' Plenty of cars out on track, including home favourite Fernando Alonso in the Renault.

  25. 60' Good morning! Welcome to the third Free Practice session at the Circuit de Catalunya ahead of the Spanish GP. This is a 60-minute session.

  2. Here's hoping for another Brawn/Jenson/Rubens success, makes the F1 championship more enjoyable. No doubt there will be further bouts of whingeing and whining of how unfair Brawns' diffuser is from the so called 'elite' teams with their bottomless financial pockets.

Best wishes to all, have a safe and happy weekend.

  15. Malcolm, Button proved it's more car than driver so that one's to rest, but you can compare team mates in the same car IMO. Hamilton proved he's better than Nando (considering he was a rookie). Kimi vs Massa? Kimi the better talent, Massa the hungrier driver IMO.
