Live Commentary

  1. 73/73 Join us again in France in two weeks to see if the Lewis Hamilton steamroller continues.

  2. 73/73 So Hamilton becomes the first Brit to win in the USA since John Watson in 1983. Sensational drive.

  3. 73/73 That makes Vettel the youngest points scorer in F1 history, breaking the record set by Jenson Button in Brazil in 2000 by six months.

  4. 73/73 Sixth is Trulli with seventh Mark Webber, taking his first points for Red Bull. Sebastian Vettel grabs eighth, ensuring a point on his grand prix debut.

  5. 73/73 Ferraris come in third and fourth with Massa ahead of Raikkonen and Kovalainen secures fifth place, making it a good North American trip for him.

  6. 73/73 Alonso finishes second, two seconds behind, and that means Hamilton's championship lead is now increased to ten points.

  7. 73/73 HE DOES IT!!! LEWIS HAMILTON BECOMES THE FIRST BRITISH DRIVER TO WIN THE UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX FOR 24 YEARS!!!!

  8. 72/73 One more lap for Lewis for his second F1 win...

  9. 71/73 Liuzzi retires his Toro Rosso in the pits.

  10. 69/73 That lets Trulli up to sixth, Webber to seventh and Sebastian Vettel into eighth on his Formula One debut!

  11. 68/73 ROSBERG RETIRES AT THE END OF THE PIT-STRAIGHT! That looks a lot like an engine failure from the Williams. His car is on fire. A great drive to sixth place is for nothing.

  12. 66/73 Good move from Davidson on Button at turn one. That's last year's Honda overtaking the current model.

  13. 65/73 The fight for the win may have been called off but the Ferrari battle has certainly not been as Raikkonen puts his nose under Massa at turn seven. He wants that third place.

  14. 63/73 Webber gets Trulli on the brakes at turn one... BUT HE LEAVES HIS BRAKING TOO LATE AND BOUCES OVER THE KERBS, BEYOND THE TRACK AND GOES OVER THE GRASS, CEDING THE PLACE.

  15. 61/73 Webber has a go at Trulli into turn ten... Not there Mark says the Italian as he shuts the door and holds on to seventh.

  16. 61/73 Webber stops from fifth! That lets Kovalainen into the place and drops the Australian behind Rosberg and Trulli.

  17. 60/73 Alex Wurz goes over the grass at turn one, but does not lose a place.

  18. 59/73 Hamilton now has a comfortable two second advantage over Alonso.

  19. 58/73 Trulli goes up to fifth but now pits for the final time. He comes out eighth behind Rosberg. That one-stop strategy has worked for the German.

  20. 57/73 Heidfeld is out and pulls off the track at turn nine. That's a good fifth place gone. A shame for the German.

  21. 56/73 NICK HEIFDFELD IS SLOWING DOWN!! His power steering is shot. His team are telling him to keep going but that car will almost certainly be stopping soon.

  22. 55/73 McLaren will surely instruct their boys to hold station now. A case of Hamilton getting his own back for the team's tactics in Monaco. Fernando will not be at all happy though.

  23. 52/73 Massa pits. He had taken the lead briefly. He gets away cleanly... but Raikkonen is closing in at full speed... MASSA KEEPS THE PLACE!

  24. 51/73 Raikkonen pits from third too. He'll be pushing on his new tyres to try and claim back time on Massa.

  25. 51/73 Hamilton pits from the lead, locking his wheels under braking for the speed limit line. 7.1 seconds is slower than Alonso......AND HE MAINTAINS HIS ADVANTAGE!!!! This is Hamilton's race to lose now. It's all in his hands.

  26. 50/73 Alonso pits from second. So he was carrying less fuel than Hamilton. 6.5 seconds and he needs to really push if he wants to win this race.

  27. 48/73 Heidfeld stops from fifth.. and holds station in front of Kovalainen.

  28. 47/73 Kovalainen stops from sixth. 8.0 seconds.

  29. 47/73 ALONSO GOES OFF! He puts two wheels on the grass at tuirn eight. He is pushing so hard. That will cost him over a second to Hamilton though. The gap is now 2.5 seconds.

  30. 47/73 Sutil is being blue-flagged. That's just ludicrous. He and Davidson are fighting for position. It's that same idiot that dropped his flag earlier.

  31. 46/73 He may be only 13th but Adrian Sutil is having the best race of his F1 career. The Spyker driver is holding off Davidson's Super Aguri and Wurz's Williams. Nice one Adrian.

  32. 45/73 Raikkonen is the man on the move. He's taken half a second a lap out of Massa over the last five laps and is now just 4.2 seconds behind with probably five laps to go before the final stops. And the Finn has already used his mandatory set of hard tyres, unlike the three ahead of him.

  33. 44/73 Hamilton's car is spewing a lot of brake dust out of the front calipers, but it's Alonso losing the time. He drops half a second to Hamilton on that lap.

  34. 43/73 Mark Webber is really closing in on Trulli's seventh-place Toyota. He is being told by Red Bull that Nico Rosberg is on a one-stopper. So if he wants to beat the German he'll have to get by Trulli.

  35. 42/73 Massa had been taking advantage of the McLaren fight, reducing his deficit to 11 seconds. But now the traffic is out of the way they are all lapping on the same pace to within a tenth of a second.

  36. 41/73 Rosberg stops from fourth. This is his only one of the afternoon. He has a slight delay as the Williams team can't get his fuel filler off at the first attempt. He exits the pits tenth, behind Vettel's BMW Sauber.

  37. 40/73 That won't please Ron or Norbert in the pits. They want to see a one-two. They certainly won't want them to take each other out.

  38. 39/78 ALONSO GOES LEFT AS THE GO OVER THE GRID. HAMILTON COVERS HIS LINE. THEY REACH THE BRAKING ZONE SIDE BY SIDE.... AND HAMILTON BRAKES SLIGHTLY LATER TO PROTECT HIS LEAD INTO TURN ONE!

  39. 38/73 Liuzzi holds Hamilton up slightly at the penultimate turn. This could be Alonso's chance as he gets a run at the rookie.

  40. 37/73 Fisichella pits from 11th and that drops him to 15th behind Davidson.

  41. 36/73 The McLarens hit the traffic, who predictably jump straight out of the way. These blue flag rules do help the leaders but i can't help but think they've robbed the sport of one of the great skills of racing.

  42. 35/73 Nico Rosberg in fourth is the fastest man on the track. He closes to within five seconds of third place Massa and is taking an average of 0.4 seconds a lap out of the Ferrari.

  43. 33/73 Alonso is really pushing it now. He's got the lead gap down to just 0.6 seconds. What a battle this is turning into. And they're both closing in on five cars to lap.

  44. 32/73 Truli pits from third. That drops him to eighth, just ahead of Webber.

  45. 31/73 Webber pits from fourth. That drops him back behind the likes of Massa, Raikkonen, Kovalainen and Heidfeld.

  46. 30/73 Fisichella passes Liuzzi for 11th. That's the same trick the Renault driver pulled on Wurz.

  47. 29/73 Hamilton has had a terrible couple of laps. The leader has seen his advantage reduced from 3.3 seconds to 1.8 by Alonso since the pit-stops!

  48. 28/73 It's Trulli, Webber and Rosberg ahead of the trio who are all yet to stop.

  49. 28/73 Raikkonen and Heidfeld are barreling down the start finsih straight. RAIKKONEN GOES INSIDE THE BMW SAUBER AND TAKES SEVENTH!!! KOVALAINEN COMES OUT BEHIND BOTH OF THEM. That's a net fourth place for the Ferrari and fifth and sixth for the others.

  50. 27/73 Kovalainen pits from the lead. 6.8 seconds is a decent stop.

  51. 26/73 So Kovalainen leads a race for the first time in his career in the Renault. Is he trying something different with the strategy? We'll soon find out.

  52. 25/73 Fisichella bangs wheels with Wurz at turn seven. That pushed the Williams wide and puts the Italian up to 12th.

  53. 24/73 Raikkonen pits from second at the end of lap 24. I make that another 21 laps worth of fuel. Can he get by Kovalainen with that?

  54. 24/73 Alonso gets inside Trulli at turn one. That's fourth place.

  55. 22/73 Alonso pits from the temporary lead.... Hamilton zooms back into the top spot with Alonso re-joining behind Jarno Trulli and in fifth!

  56. 21/73 Hamilton pits from the lead. 8.8 seconds sees him lose the lead to Alonso. Massa and Heidfeld are both in too so Kovalainen is up to second.

  57. 19/73 Heidfeld makes a mistake!!! He spins at turn one and re-gains, but Kovalainen is through to fourth!!!

  58. 18/73 Oh dear! A marshal has dropped a blue flag onto the start/finish straight. That could be dangerous. I hope the safety car is not called out.

  59. 16/73 Fisichella's charge is bearing fruit. He's made three places in the last four laps moving up to 13th, getting by Sutil and Speed, and moving up when Sato spun.

  60. 16/73 Hamilton is steadily pulling away from Alonso. His gap is now 3.3 seconds and he seems to have at least two tenths advantage every lap.

  61. 14/73 Sato is out!!! He's not getting out of that gravel trap.

  62. 13/73 Great battles down the field. Sutil is having a go at Sato... WHO SPINS!!!! That was just born out of frustation.

  63. 11/73 Sato is under investigation. The stewards believe he overtook Jenson Button under yellow flags.

  64. 10/73 Fisichella eventually makes the move stick at turn one.

  65. 9/73* Meanwhile the recovering Fisichella tries to go by Button into turn eight for 16th. He gets inside.. BUT THE BRITISH DRIVER HANGS HIM OUT AND GOES WHEEL TO WHEEL FOR THREE CORNERS!

  66. 7/73* It's a good battle for fifth at the moment, and it's Heikki Kovalainen unusually in front of his Finnish countryman Raikkonen.

  67. 6/73* Hamilton increases his lead to 1.7 seconds with the race's fastest lap.

  68. 5/73* Alex Wurz gets down the outside of Vitantonio Liuzzi.. OOH! he leaves his braking too late and nearly tags the back of the Toro Rosso. That's the battle for 11th.

  69. 4/73* Hamilton's lead over Alonso is maintaining at a steady 1.4 seconds.

  70. 2/73* It was certainly Ralf's fault. He locked up and clipped the back end of Barrichello's Honda. Coulthard just got caught up in their accident.

  71. 2/73* David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello both retire in the pits as a result of damage from the collision with Ralf Schumacher.

  72. 2/73* FISICHELLA SPINS AT TURN FOUR. He lost it all by himself and trudges through the gravel to re-join the track.

  73. 2/73* Yellow flags at turn one and that's because Ralf Schumacher's car is there. The German came together with David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello at turn one. The other two continued.

  74. 1/73* End of the first lap and it's Hamilton, Alonso, Massa, Heidfeld, Kovalainen, Raikkonen, Trulli, Fisichella, Webber and Rosberg.

  75. 1/73* Alonso tucks into the Hamilton's slipstream but can't pass him into turn one. Massa is third from Heidfeld AND THERE'S AN ACCIDENT AT THE BACK AS VETTEL GOES ACROSS THE GRASS!

  76. 1/73* We're racing at Indianapolis!!!

  77. 0/73* The whole field is on the grid, the heat is rising and the lights are on.....

  78. 0/73* We're underway for the formation lap, with all the drivers trying desperatley to get some heat into their tyres before the start.

  79. 17:59 The grid is being cleared with less then a minute to go before the formation lap. Among the drivers on the grid is Sebastian Vettel, seventh in his BMW Sauber and ready for his F1 race debut.

  80. 17:00 Lewis Hamilton sits on his second pole of the week for a race that gets underway at 18:00 UK time.
