  10. 54/58 - Massa is right on Fisichella's tail. He dives out of the slipstream into turn one, but can't make it stick.

  11. 52/58 - We've got a great end-of-race battle for fifth brewing between Fisichella and Massa, who is only 1.5 seconds behind and closing in at a rate of a second a lap.

  12. 51/58 - Kovalainen goes off again at turn seven. he keeps going though.

  13. 50/58 - A HUGELY SPECTACULAR ACCIDENT THAT ELIMINATES BOTH DRIVERS. BUT COULTHARD WAS SO LUCKY NOT TO FLIP OVER... AND WURZ ALMOST CAUGHT A BIG CHUNK OF RED BULL ON HIS HEAD!!!! Yellow flags are out.

  14. 49/58 - Coulthard has a go down the inside, but he's come from a long way back. Wurz turns in.... COULTHARD GOES OVER THE TOP OF HIM AND FLIES INTO THE GRAVEL TRAP AT TURN THREE!!!!!

  15. 48/58 - A good battle for tenth is brewing between Alex Wurz and David Coulthard.

  16. 48/58 - Massa is now up to sixth following the final stops of Rosberg and Ralf Schumacher.

  17. 45/58 - 6.7 seconds is a great stop. He had to take on less fuel than Hamilton as he filled up with more at the first stops. He is up to second overall.

  18. 45/58 - Alonso pits from the lead. Raikkonen goes through but it's Hamilton's whereabouts that is crucial.

  19. 43/58 - 8.2 seconds drops him to third.

  20. 43/58 - Webber is clear but Sato is holding Hamilton up. This could be crucial in his battle with his team-mate.

  21. 42/58 - Sato is holding up Hamilton as the leader comes up to lap the Super Aguri!!!! ALONSO IS RIGHT ON HIS TAIL AND TRYING TO GO AROUND THE OUTSIDE AT THE FINAL CORNER..... as Hamilton pits.

  22. 42/58 - Mark Webber spins in the pit-lane!!!!

  23. 42/58 - Hamilton is back into the lead from Alonso, but the World champion is under a second behind the rookie.

  24. 41/58 - Raikkonen pits from the lead. 7.8 seconds drops him to third, right behind the McLarens.

  25. 41/58 - News on two of our retirements. Scott Speed's was caused by a blown front-right tyre, while Kubica dropped out with gearbox failure.

  26. 40/58 - KOVALAINEN SPINS AT TURN ONE!!!! Through the gravel and back on the track. He loses the final points place to Massa and is now right in front of Trulli.

  27. 39/58 - Kovalainen has really closed up on Ralf Schumacher since Rosberg got by the Toyota. He's putting the pressure on the German.

  28. 39/58 - Heidfeld pits for the final time from fourth. He drops one place behind Fisichella's Renault.

  29. 39/58 - GREAT MOVE FROM ROSBERG!!! HE DIVES DOWN THE INSIDE OF SCHUMACHER FOR SIXTH PLACE AT TURN NINE! Forceful move.

  30. 38/58 - That moves Heidfeld to fourth, Fisichella to fifth, Ralf Schumacher to sixth, Rosberg to seventh and Kovalainen inton the final points position in his Renault.

  31. 38/58 - Kubica is out of the race.

  32. 38/58 - KUBICA IS SLOWING DOWN!!!!!! What a shame. The Polish driver has been great today, keeping it out of trouble and running fourth. He'll tour back to the pits and into retirement.

  33. 36/58 - A BIG MOMENT FOR KOVALAINEN. Two wheels on the grass-crete at turn 12 loses him a second or so, but he's still more than four seconds clear of tenth place Massa.

  34. 35/58 - What a great drive from Nico Rosberg too, the Williams racer has quietly got up to eighth with a great series of hot laps just before his first pit-stop.

  35. 33/58 - Heidfeld is closing in on his fourth-place team-mate Kubica. The gap now is just under a second. This one looks set to run.

  36. 32/58 - Raikkonen shakes his fist at Barrichello as he laps the Brazilian. His lead is now 17 seconds.

  37. 30/58 - Jenson Button takes the drive through penalty he has been given for speeding in the pit lane.

  38. 30/58 - Scott Speed is out of the race. His Toro Rosso goes across the grass at turn 12. It's not conclusive whether it was driver error or mechanical problem. Yello flags are out.

  39. 30/58 - Massa drops to tenth, behind Heikki Kovalainen.

  40. 30/58 - Speak of the devil. Massa pits for 12.8 seconds. That will be his only stop of the afternoon.

  41. 27/58 - Felipe Massa is now up to seventh, having started from the back. The Ferrari driver has not yet pitted though and will probably drop back to 11th or so when he does.

  42. 25/58 - Sutil is given a drive-through penalty for ignoring blue flags while Hamilton was trying to pass him.

  43. 23/58 - Hamilton pits and drops to second. Great stuff from him. Both McLarens have passed Heidfeld in the first round of stops. So has Kubica.

  44. 22/58 - Hamilton is being blocked by backmarker Adrian Sutil's Spyker. Hamilton won't like that - the pair are friends and team-mates from their F3 days.

  45. 21/58 - Alonso pits from second. 7.9 seconds and he only loses position to Raikkonen as expected.

  46. 20/58 - Kubica is in the pits from third. HE EMERGES AHEAD OF HEIDFELD!!!! Good work from the Polish driver.

  47. 19/58 - Fisichella pits from fifth. He drops down the order to seventh, between the Toyotas. OOOH! Trulli nearly hit him while trying to go around the outside at turn one.

  48. 19/58 - LEWIS HAMILTON LEADS THE AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX ON HIS F1 DEBUT!!!!!! GREAT STUFF!

  49. 18/58 - RAIKKONEN PITS FROM THE LEAD. 8.4 seconds and he drops to fourth behind Kubica.

  50. 17/58 - Albers says he missed his braking point for the crash while trying to get something untangled from his earplugs.

  51. 15/58 - Button gets a wiggle on out of 12.... AND IT HELPS MASSA AS THE BRAZILIAN GOES BY AND INTO 14th. Next up is Barrichello.

  52. 14/58 - Barrichello moves ahead of Button in the other Honda and into 13th. Not quite a case of 'after you Rubens' but the Brit was not really fighting it.

  53. 14/58 - Hamilton is now up to second with Alonso, Kubica, Fisichella and Webber all moving up.

  54. 14/58 - Nick Heidfeld pits from second in the BMW-Sauber. 9.6 seconds for the German. He emerges in seventh, between Webber and Trulli. That worked well for the team as they put hard tyres on.

  55. 14/58 - Raikkonen is simply running away with this. He is now 11 seconds clear at the front.

  56. 11/58 - What an unusual crash. He just seemed to arrive about 30 mph too fast to make the corner and skated off mid-apex. Maybe his brakes failed? Yellow flags are out.

  57. 10/48 - ALBERS IS OUT!!!! He has crashed on the entry to turn three and gone into the side of the barriers in his Spyker.

  58. 9/58 - Massa is trying to clean the line on the entrances to turns 13 and 1. He's sizing up for a move on Barrichello, but that Honda engine is useful. Coulthard is still on his tail and Wurz is closing in too.

  59. 7/58 - Fastest lap for Raikkonen. He is now four seconds clear of Heidfeld.

  60. 6/58 - HAMILTON JUST PUTS TWO WHEELS ON THE DIRT. That's at turn 14. He won't make that mistake again.

  61. 5/58 - Massa breezes past Coulthard down the start/finish straight. That's 15th for the Ferrari.

  62. 4/58 - BARRICHELLO NUDGES THE WALL! He just clips it with his outside right at the fastest point on the track. I hope that hasn't done any damage to his suspension. It certainly hasn't lost any time.

  63. 4/58 - Jenson Button in 13th is holding up his Honda team-mate Barrichello, who is on the radio asking them to get him out of the way. David Coulthard and Felipe Massa are right behind.

  64. 3/58 - SPIN!!!!!!! Adrian Sutil tries to force his Spyker down the inside of Davidson's Super Aguri. The German spins and Davidson is forced onto the gravel, but continues at turn eight. Sutil gets going again with a spin-turn.

  65. 3/58 - In fact, that's 16th as he goes around the outside of Alex Wurz' Williams at turn three.

  66. 3/58 - Make that 17th. He dives inside Scott Speed's Toro Rosso at turn 13.

  67. 2/58 - Felipe Massa is up to 18th from the back in his Ferrari.

  68. 2/58 - End of the first lap and Raikkonen has a 1.5 second lead from Heidfeld's BMW and the brilliant Lewis Hamilton's McLaren - and there are no team orders at the British team either. Alonso, Kubica, Fisichella, Webber, Schumacher, Trulli and Sato round out the top ten.

  69. 1/58 - Great start from Raikkonen, Alonso loses two places to Heidfeld and his team-mate Hamilton. Meanwhile Davidson stalls in the Super Aguri... but gets away one from the end.

  70. 1/58 - GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  71. 0/58 - They're forming up on the grid.....

  72. 0/58 - We're hearing that Nick Heidfeld is the only frontrunner on soft tyres. A low fuel load perhaps?

  73. 04:00 - The cars are off on their formation lap.... The atmosphere is really building.....

  74. 03:57 - The big news of the morning is that Ferrari have changed Felipe Massa's engine, so the Brazilian moves back from 16th to 22nd on the grid.
