Canadian GP - The Race (70 Laps)

Live Comments

  1. 70/70 - Great scenes on the podium, in a race marred by Kubica's crash from which we can tell you the Pole has emerged with a broken leg.

  2. 70/70 - So today is the day Lewis Hamilton goes from being a star to a superstar. What an achievement in only his sixth Grand Prix. I can see the newspaper headlines now - both front pages and back.

  3. 70/70 - Second is a great result for Heidfeld, BMW Sauber's best result in their history, while Wurz' third is Williams' first podium for two years.

  4. 70/70 - HE DOES IT!!!! LEWIS HAMILTON WINS THE CANADIAN GRAND PRIX. IT'S HIS FIRST WIN AND COMES IN BRILLIANT FASHION!!!!!

  5. 69/70 - Lewis is stroking it home. This will give him an eight point lead in the world championship....

  6. 69/70 - One lap separates Hamilton from his first Grand Prix win. No mistakes now Lewis.... His father Anthony has his fingers crossed in the pits.

  7. 68/70 - SATO SWEEPS BY ALONSO FOR SIXTH PLACE AT THE FINAL CHICANE! SENSATIONAL MOVE!!!! A SUPER AGURI PASSES A MCLAREN!!!! I NEVER THOUGHT I'D EVER SEE THAT! Come on Taku.

  8. 67/70 - Heidfeld is on course to equal the best finsih of his career, and second would be the best finish in BMW Sauber's history too.

  9. 66/70 - Sato gets seventh from Schumacher! Great move around the outside for the Japanese driver. The scene is set for the best finish in Super Aguri's history.

  10. 65/70 - And in case you were wondering, Lewis Hamilton's McLaren is still going like clockwork. Five seconds is now his lead over Heidfeld.

  11. 64/70 - Barrichello's stop elevates Kovalainen to fourth - that would be the best finish of his career - Raikkonen to fifth and Alonso to sixth, with the Spaniard now dropping back from Raikkonen.

  12. 63/70 - Barrichello pits. He didn't have enough fuel. He drops to the tail of the field. Wurz is now third. Williams haven't had a podium since Nurgburing 2005, can they do it today?

  13. 63/70 - Sato is having a real look at Ralf Schumacher. This is for the final point, and pontentially the Toyota drive next year.

  14. 62/70 - Alex Wurz is fourth and really holding up Kovalainen, Raikkonen and Alonso. Can he and Barrichello get to the end without another stop? Well, they've both saved a lot of fuel with all the safety car laps so who knows?

  15. 61/70 - Alonso dives down the inside of Schumacher at Casino. That's seventh place and Raikkonen is once more his target.

  16. 60/70 - We're green again and Hamilton leads Heidfeld, BARRICHELLO WHO HAS COME UP TO THIRD IN THE HONDA DUE TO EVERYONE ELSE'S PROBLEMS, Wurz, Kovalainen and Raikkonen.

  17. 59/70 - Safety car in at the end of this lap.

  18. 58/70 - Trulli crashes exiting the pit-lane. That looked pathetic, but I'll resist the tempatation to stick the knife in though because after Toyota's suspension problems on Friday he could have had a failure then.

  19. 57/70 - That's good news for Mark Webber. He's 11th now. Make that tenth as Jarno Trulli pits for the final time, and has a chance of the points once more. It's Sato ahead of him.

  20. 56/70 - The safety car comes out for the fourth time today.

  21. 56/70 - Tonio Liuzzi crashes into the wall at the final chicane. He's out.

  22. 56/60 - Alonso overdoes it in his attempts to pass Fisichella! He slides wide over the grass at turn one's exit and both Raikkonen and Schumacher go past him.

  23. 55/70 - Takuma Sato stalled in his final stop. That spoiled any chance of points. He is now 12th.

  24. 54/70 - Alonso had to back out of the throttle while Davidson slowed over the line. No passing until after the line remember.

  25. 54/70 - The safety car comes back in ans Hamilton leads over the line as Mark Webber pits.

  26. 53/70 - Alonso beats Raikkonen out. He is ninth and must chase a result.

  27. 53/70 - Raikkonen, Alonso and Ralf Schumacher all pit. This is crucial for Ferrari and McLaren...

  28. 52/70 - BLACK FLAGS FOR MASSA AND FISICHELLA. That's for leaving the pit lane while the red light was on. Both have to come into the pits to retire. It's just like what happened to Juan Pablo Montoya two years ago.

  29. 51/70 - That's a disaster for Webber in second. He will have to wait for the pit lane to re-open before he pits for the final time.

  30. 50/70 - The safety car comes out for debris on the track. That's the wing of Albers' Spyker by the way. It's our third caution period of the race.

  31. 49/70 - Christijan Albers runs over the kerbs at the third chicane and loses his front wing. He pits for a replacement.

  32. 49/70 - Raikkonen is now under pressure from seventh place Alonso. We've seen this battle before but this time the McLaren driver seems miles faster than his rival.

  33. 48/70 - Hamilton pits for the final time from the lead. Eight seconds and he re-joins in a comfortable lead.

  34. 47/70 - Heidfeld pits from second. Nine seconds. He drops to third behind Webber.

  35. 45/70 - Hamilton is doing exactly what he needs to. He is now 6.4 seconds ahead of Heidfeld.

  36. 43/70 - The FIA are investigating an incident involving Massa and Fisichella. I make that about exiting the pit lane while the red light was on.

  37. 42/70 - Alonso is now up to eighth! He passes Heikki Kovalainen's Renault and Christijan Albers' Sypker in two laps and benefits from Tonio Liuzzi's pit-stop.

  38. 40/70 - That helps Alonso. He's now up to 12th after his penalty... make that 11th. He goes inside Rubens Barrichello's Honda at the final chicane.

  39. 39/70 - Ralf Schumacher exits the pits down in 12th place after his pit stop.

  40. 38/70 - Rosberg and Trulli spin in unision at turn one. They were battling for position but did not make contact.

  41. 37/70 - Davidson pits. BUT NOBODY'S READY FOR HIM. DISASTER!!! Oh, that's what happened. He locked up at the final corner, elected to go and pit but obviously did not get on the radio to his team soon enough.

  42. 37/70 - ANTHONY DAVIDSON IS NOW THIRD IN HIS SUPER AGURI, BUT HE'S YET TO STOP!

  43. 37/70 - David Coulthard is out of the race. His Red Bull has stopped on the inside of turn two.

  44. 36/70 - Alonso and Rosberg take their penalties. Both re-join down in 15th place-ish.

  45. 36/70 - Massa is losing time too, as is Webber, right behind Ralf Schumacher's plodding Toyota.

  46. 35/70 - Neither Alonso nor Rosberg are showing any signs of pitting for their penalties.

  47. 34/70 - Raikkonen makes a big error at Casino hairpin. He slides wide on the concrete dust laid down after Kubica's crash and Sato passes him for tenth!

  48. 33/70 - The two guys that are much higher than they should be are Davidson and Schumacher, but both are yet to stop.

  49. 32/70 - We're green again with Hamilton getting a sensational run on Heidfeld. He is two seconds clear over the finish line.

  50. 31/70 - The safety car is coming in at the end of the next lap.

  51. 30/70 - The order is changing every lap due to the pit-stops. It now looks like this; Hamilton, Heidfeld, Alonso, Rosberg, Davidson, Schumacher, Webber, Massa, Fisichella and Raikkonen.

  52. 29/70 - Kubica has now been removed from his car and is on the way to the medical centre. We still have no word on his condition though as the shell of the car is removed from the track.

  53. 28/70 - Plenty of drivers at the tail end of the field have made two stops in the last two laps to get their runs on the super-soft tyres - which don't work - out of the way.

  54. 27/70 - It certainly pales into insignificance, but Alonso and Rosberg, who lie third and fourth, have been given ten second stop and go penalties for making their stops AFTER the pit lane had been closed.

  55. 27/70 - Worryingly Kubica has not moved. He has certainly been knocked out, but let's all pray that the Polish driver is going to be okay.

  56. 26/70 - The safety car is delpoyed unsurprising.

  57. 26/70 - Trulli seemed to squeeze Kubica into the wall as the track bent left at 200 mph. The BMW Sauber was launched into the air, clipped the last row of tyres and then plunged head on into a concrete wall. That flipped him over three more times before he came to a rest at the exit of the hairpin.

  58. 26/70 - HUGE ACCIDENT FOR KUBICA!!!!!! HE ROLLS HIS BMW SAUBER ON THE RUN-UP TO THE CASINO HAIRPIN!!!!!

  59. 26/70 - We're racing again with Hamilton still leading.

  60. 25/70 - Massa and Fisichella both exited the pit-lane with the red light still on though. Kubica and everyone behind him did not. That should mean penalty for Massa and Fisichella.

  61. 24/70 - Massa, Fisichella, Raikkonen and co all pit. Raikkonen has to queue behind his team-mate so he loses even more time to his team-mate.

  62. 24/70 - Massa leads from Hamilton and Raikkonen, but the new US-style rules means the pit-lane is closed for a lap before anybody can stop. Hamilton in second is not affected too badly because he has been in already, but this will allow Alonso right onto his tail.

  63. 23/70 - Alonso and Rosberg dive in for their stops before the order is given to close the pit lane... BUT THE FERRARIS DO NOT!!! THIS WILL RUIN THEIR RACE TOTALLY!!!

  64. 23/70 - Sutil is out.

  65. 23/70 - THE SAFETY CAR IS OUT!!!! It's because Adrian Sutil has hit the wall at turn three.

  66. 22/70 - Hamilton pits from the lead. 9.0 seconds gets him out between Rosberg and Raikkonen. Well Kimi, if you hadn't had that moment you might have been in front too and able to hold him up.

  67. 21/70 - That's worked out well for Hamilton. Heidfeld was the only man he would have failed to beat out if he had stopped first. He now has 19.2 seconds on second place Massa.

  68. 20/70 - Heidfeld pits from second place in the BMW. 7.7 seconds brings him out ahead of his team-mate Kubica, so he is seventh overall.

  69. 19/70 - MASSA GOES BY ALONSO FOR THIRD!!!! Alonso goes grass-tracking at turn one once more. What is going on with the Spaniard? Has he taken a poor set-up choice that isn't working in the race? Perhaps his brake balance is wound too far towards the rear?

  70. 18/70 - Heidfeld does his best lap of the race - half a second quicker than Hamilton. Don't expect that form to continue though.

  71. 17/70 - Remember what we were saying about Raikkonen in clear air? He does a 1:17.9, which is on a par with Alonso's pace, but still a second off Hamilton's.

  72. 16/70 - Hamilton now has 11.2 seconds in hand over Heidfeld and 15.2 over Alonso. Pretty soon he will have a pit-stop in hand over his team-mate.

  73. 15/70 - Webber passes Liuzzi for 12th... But runs wide and has too cede the place. Should he have waited for the following corner?

  74. 14/70 - ALONSO GOES GRASS-TRACKING AT TURN ONE! That's exactly what he did on lap one, albeit to a lesser extent. Hamilton has really got him flusterd today.

  75. 13/70 - Hamilton's lead is now up to 9.2 seconds over Heidfeld, while Alonso can seemingly do nothing about the BMW Sauber.

  76. 12/70 - Speaking of Williams, Wurz loses 15th to Kovalainen. I wonder if the Austrian's rear wing took any damage in the Speed collision. He does seem to be down on top speed.

  77. 11/70 - Raikkonen goes grass-tracking at the third chicane. He loses over three seconds to Rosberg. Now we'll see the pace that Ferrari can run in clean air as he tries to close in on the Williams.

  78. 11/70 - Hamilton's lead is now up to 8.6 seconds. He's pulling away at about 0.7 seconds a lap from Heidfeld.

  79. 10/70 - He's safely off the track so there will be no safety car.

  80. 10/70 - Scott Speed retires with broken front left suspension. He broke the part trying to overtake Wurz... OOH! The pair collided with Speed almost being launched over the back of the Williams.

  81. 9/70* - Webber makes another place. He goes inside Rubens Barrichello's Honda at Champions Wall for 12th.

  82. 8/70* - Jenson Button's retirement was caused by a gearbox problem.

  83. 7/70* - Mark Webber is already on the move. He's passed David Coulthard and Alex Wurz for 13th.

  84. 5/70* - Lewis Hamilton continues to pull away. He is now 4.6 seconds clear.

  85. 4/70* - Kimi Raikkonen clipped Massa at the start of the race and lost a little time. That's what let Nico Rosberg's Williams past, but the Ferrari man is now climing all over the back of him.

  86. 3/70* - That's dropped him to 16th.

  87. 3/70* - DISATER FOR MARK WEBBER! HE SPINS AT TURN TWO. He got down the outside of Robert Kubica on the start/finish straight trying to pass the BMW Sauber but came in to the turn far too hot and lost the rear end under braking.

  88. 2/70* - Bad news for Jenson Button. He's out. He never got away from the grid and Honda have been unable to fix the car.

  89. 1/70* - The big losers are Ferrari. Alonso decides to stick to the middle of the track for just long enough to delay both of the Italian machines, dropping Massa to fourth and Raikkonen to sixth.

  90. 1/70* - The talk has all been about team orders but that almost made him a very unpopular Spaniard.

  91. 1/70* - Hamilton leads into turn one... AS ALONSO RUNS WIDE OVER THE RUN-OFF! HE ALMOST HITS HAMILTON AS HE RE-JOINS.

  92. 1/70* - WE'RE GO!!!!!!

  93. 0/70* - Hamilton is on the grid and ready for the off. The revs rise, the heat haze is in evidence......

  94. 0/70* - He will suerly be quick today but don't forget we almost always get a safety car here in Montreal, so strategy will be as important as speed.

  95. 0/70* - Hamilton leads the field away at the start of the formation lap.

  96. 17:58 - Hamilton, don't forget, has only started five Grands Prix before today so a win would be a sensational achievement for a man who already seems like he's been running at the front of F1 for his whole life.

  97. 17:56 - It's Britain's Lewis Hamilton on pole position for the first time, and the McLaren driver is bidding to become Formula One's latest first time winner.

  98. 17:50 - The race gets underway at 18:00 UK time and we'll have full text commentary and lap by lap timing from the Island circuit.

  99. 12:00 - Hello and welcome to eurosport.com and to LIVE coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix from the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.
