  • Federer - Really The Greatest?

Roger Federer may well have been voted as 'The Greatest' current sportsman by readers of eurosport.yahoo.com, but he has a big gap in his trophy cabinet - the French Open - whereas Tiger has pretty much won everything. Who really deserved to win the vote?

sorry, but the guy who actually has to sweat is the greatest sportsman. Tiger is indeed a brilliant technician at a difficult game but get back to me when he has to carry his own gear and run between the holes while his opponent fires balls at him at 200kmh. Golf is not a sport, as is clearly evident by the fact that fat blokes can still play it and win.

Definitely Roger is the greatest and by far! Not just he deserved it from all aspects, just imagine the kind of energy he puts on to win weeks after weeks his tournaments, there is no comparaison with Golf, I practise both sports and Golf is far easier from an "Athlete" point of view, Just Compare one single point of Tennis to one shot of Golf, and let me know! Tiger is great though but he is not the greatest

Golf is not a sport for real athletes. It is more like a mind-technical game such as snooker and its doesn't require any athletic skills.
Particularly i think that the best athlete should be decided among atomic sports.
Thats because it's much more difficult for an individual athlete to became a champion by himself than through an athletic team.

Wrong, the guy who actually has to sweat only becomes the smelliest sportsman. The word sportsman does not refer soley to ability. It carries the personality trait also. Therefore All sports must be included. I just cannot fathom how Alonso can be included. A cry baby who is a bad loser certainly excludes him as a sportsman of any form.

So your definition of sport is "an activity that makes the player perspire", and by extension the best player is "He or she who perspires most". Mmmm - I think we all know where you are coming from.

Dictionary.com defines sport (in part) as:

        1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
        2. a particular form of this, esp. in the out of doors.
        3. diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.

There are plenty of players of baseball, football, hockey & swimming at the top of their respective games carrying a few extra pounds. Physical attributes are only important insofar as they limit or otherwise the activity.

So … you just keep buying those headbands and deodorant.

I think you guys are all right in a certain way, however, it's plenty of extraordinary sportsmen in the world.

Have we all forgotten about stars like Weyne Gretzky or Michael Jordan?

I'd rather say Roger Federer can be considered the greatest tennis player of ever ;-)

      Cheers

how can two sports stars that only got thru' some of the stages because the 'experts' over ruled the vote even be considered.
its like a penalty shoot out result being ignored because in some 'experts' view the loser didn't score enough....
why bother asking us our view in the first place only to decide that our votes don't count? ......

remember 'experts' built the titanic but amateurs built the 'ark'

It is clear that Federer is amazing - maybe even the greatest tennis player that ever lived, but Tiger Woods is doing things in golf that nobody ever thought possible. He has to play against a whole host of different players on different courses every week but no what matter the circumstances, he seems to come up trumps.

He would get my vote every time but I think at least the right two people were in the final.

If I had a third vote I would have given it to Ole Einar Bjorndalen.
