Not wanting to question the tactics against Madrid, as they were spot on until the red card, but looking back on things, should Rooney have started ahead of RVP?
I understand why he didn't, and why no ones even bringing this up, it goes without saying how good upfront RVP has been for us this season since his dream move. Also Rooney was dreadful away in Madrid (as he usually is on the wing to be fair), plus Danny was superb in both games. But clearly RVP was still carrying his knock, and the form of the two - RVP = 1 goal 1 assist in 8 games/ Rooney = 11 goals 5 assists in last 13) speaks for itself.
RVP showed his quality and maturity against Madrid, but he doesn't look 100% which showed in his finishing...then again Rooney put over a good chance at the end!
Personally I'd rather see Hernandez as our second striker, was gutted he didn't get on the pitch. His all round game has come on so much this season, I'd hate it if we lost him just because we 'need' to give Rooney games. He's a goal machine in the mold of RVN, plus he actually shows passion when he scores. Rooney barely smiles even if he hits a 30 yarder.
The tactics were spot on as you say. Had things gone wrong, however, we know that SAF likes to have strong back-up to bring on and shake things up. He probably felt that starting RVP-Wazza would leave him with "only" Chich-Wellbz to bring on. So he split the pairings (helped by Danny's great performance in the 1st leg). There was no "demotion" involved. I've got to say that even reduced to 10 men we should have scored a couple.
