Lotto, I know what you mean about blank stares. A couple of weeks ago I saluted a Leeds shirt in a Sainsbury’s car park. I was in a hurry and didn’t stop to talk. There was a glimmer of recognition but, as I had my hands full of shopping, I got the impression that the guy wearing the shirt thought I was either taking the piss or belching!
However, at recent matches, I’ve noticed ‘young’ supporters (most looking like ‘squaddies’ on leave from Afghanistan) giving the salute. Their passion makes me feel proud, but also troubled as the salute has components of Imperial Roman, Fascist, and Black Panther signatures.
