I know what you mean, birthdays and xmas just aren't the same when you are of an 'advanced' age!! Girls are soooo difficult to buy for. My wife's birthday was last weekend and I had a real nightmare until I found her a nice handbag. Seemed to go down well but you never really know with girls!!.
Shame about Marbella, I used to live near there until October last year. I've still got some contacts out there for villas etc in a place called Nerja. Let me know if you want their web address etc.
