Arsenal Message Board
Which players do we think will end their career with Arsenal? After some of the talk already on this board about Fabregas. It got me thinking about which players will see out the rest of their playing days with the Gunners.
One that springs to mind is Touré, I can't see him being lured away for anything. In the future I think Arsenal defenders will be compared to him, the same way defenders were compared to Adams.
Another I would imagine that might stay would be Ljungberg, although he may have the same fate as Ray Parlour when he starts losing his place in the starting line up he might get the urge to go elsewhere to get more regular football.
Obviously I imagine we all expect Henry to be there until he retires. For very obvious reasons.
Not really sure about Hleb or Rosicky maybe it's too early in their respective Arsenal careers.
Gallas will probably stay with us, although if you'd asked me that a couple of years back I'd have expected him to complete his career at Chel$ki.
Lauren is a difficult one as I'm 50/50 to whether he'll stay at the moment considering the quality we already have fighting it out for the RB spot. Before Eboue, Hoyte and Gilbert came along I'd have said he'd stay with us to finish his career but now I'm not so sure.
There are more but I'll open this up to a bit of discussion, and see what people think about the comments I've already made and the other players I havn't yet mentioned.
The future legends are I think Cesc, Gilberto, Toure, Eboue, Gallas, Henry, ... I would add freddie to the list and lehmann but have chosen not to.
My reasons are as follows. Both Toure and Eboue were plicuked from relative obscurity by wenger , they earn well, you get the impression Arsenal is a family place for them and I can see them going the distance. The same goes for Gilberto, you can see he loves the place and it is quite rare for south american footballers to come to a place and really settle there. Cesc because after signing an eight year contract he'll want tp stick around.. many will say he'll want to go to spain at some stage and he might but i am backing him to stay, Henry .. for sure.. Gallas he likes to belong somewhere and this is where he will stay.
The problem with these projections is Arsenals over thirties rule of 1 year contracts as this might steer a Ljundberg away... but hopefully if they look at dennises last few seasons they can see that there's still a meaningfull amount of football to play.
Now I see Lehman as a conundrum as he has come out and said publicly he'd like to finish his career in Germany, but then seems to want to continue his contract with us, I mean how many more years is this guy expecting to play top flight football? Maybe he doesn't mind what team he plays for in Germany as long as he gets to play week in week out.
If Van Persie becomes the consistent fantastic player we all expect him to be, then I'd love to see him emulate DB10 and stay with us until he retires. It seems quite possible.
Hopefully Diaby will show more commitment than Viera, but as someone said before things are changing and maybe he'll do a similar thing later in his career. i.e go off looking for new challenges in a diferent country.
I disagree with the Pires thing being disrepectful, Bergkamp never felt disrespected only signing a one year extension. How many years did he continue to sign that "one" year conract. He proved himself worthy time and time again. Pires could have done the same thing with us. I honestly don't see how he thought he should get better treatment than the legend that was DB10. That said I can understand his decision and I don't hate him for it. He gave us his greatest years, it's a shame whats happened to him now, (gotta wonder if our medics maybe knew it might happen).
I agree that Gilberto will probably finish up playing for us. Although there is the slightest chance he might want to finish up at home, after he I don't think he's lived in London as long as Bergkamp has therefore he probably doesn't consider it home the same way that Dennis does.
Hard to tell with most of the younger players at the moment, we'll have to wait and see.
Watch how a player plays in a game and then try to think about his positives and negatives. All you do is slam a player without any rhyme or reason to what you say. How is it that you seem to think Clichy has no defending capabilities? As for the stuff you say about defense wins games, do you not understand that without goals there's no way you can win a game. It really seems that your knowledges of the beautiful game has come from too many hours on a pc simulation game. Why is it that 99% of other posters find what you say utter trash? I thought you believed in democracy?
I'm thinking of starting a "we love Mathieu Flamini" fan club. Wanna join? Ok maybe not, well I'm starting this other club "We hate Hoyte and Clichy" will you join that one? Ok Ok I know the club you'll join "I know nothing about football, my name is club club".
I think there are certain players that would want to Bry, Toure, Freddie, Gallas, Henry, Gilberto and Lauren for example.
But, it may not necessarily be their decision; for example as they near the end of their career they may still want to play regularly and have a decent contract. There may be a few Pires situations, or Winterburn situations. Good professionals want to play and if AW can no longer guarantee them that, then I say good luck to them, like I did with Wright, Winterburn and Pires for example, good pros that just wanted to play football, protected by a decent contract!

yeah i agree about kolo i would like to think lauren but he i doubt is a first pick guarenteed and he seems the type who likes to play, wenger might be able to influence him that will depend on if he wants to manage/ coach after he has finnished playing henery i would say yes he will stay and maybe gallas some of the brazilians do like to play the last season at home so maybe not gilberto, Also i read that jens is looking for another year so maybe he had decided to retire at arsenal?? and yea freddie bless him if arsene does not treat him like dennis a Yr at a time which i thought was a tad disresspectful of the club to be honest and i am still upset we lost pires 2 yrs is not much to ask
