Arsenal Message Board
I saw a couple of posts on Arsenal stats in the football365.com recently that i thought make for interesting reading:
"In their two league matches against Everton, Arsenal have taken 20 corners and scored from none. Everton have taken eight and scored twice.
In all, the Toffees tested Jens Lehmann six times. In 180 minutes of football, Arsenal have registered a total of 44 shots and troubled the scorers just once."
"A current look at our midfield 'threat' is sorry reading (Prem goals)...
Gilberto - 8 goals (4 pens)
Flamini - 3
Hleb - 2
Rosicky - 1
Diaby - 1
Ljungberg - 0
Walcott - 0
Fabregas - 0
Denilson - 0
Song - 0"
None of this is exactly a bolt out of the blue I know, but it does beg the question of where exactly the goals are going to come from next year. Especially given Arsene's comments in the press...
"There have been calls for the Arsenal manager to make a major signing - particularly in attack -during the summer to signal his intent for next season.
Wenger, though, maintains he will only move for players of "super, super class" - and only if the right man is available at the right price.
"I am in a situation where I have a team who is coming up and I know I am under pressure to put big names in front of these players who could be sensational next year," said the Arsenal manager.
"I have to be strong enough not to do that."
Wenger added: "There is a lot of strength within the squad and they can compete at the top level.
"In the midfield we have Hleb, Rosicky, Diaby, Song, Fabregas, Denilson, Gilberto - what can you add?
"Up front you have Walcott, Henry, van Persie, Adebayor, Bendtner who is coming back from Birmingham, Aliadiere too - where do you put all these players?"
Well with Aliadiere, Mr Wenger, may i suggest put him on the first boat back to France!!!
I think Wenger has potential targets in his mind - possibly Babel(though he has signed a new contract at Ajax), maybe Jesus Navas, definitely Ribery, but if he can't get them - he won't add to the squad in a major way.
I don't think we need too much more and we will definitely be better next season, but players who haven't scored this season aren't magically going to start banging them in next year...
I admire Wengers faith in his young players, and i feel that the majority can go on to be top players, but none of the midfield are going to weigh in with a significant amount of goals.
And that ladies and gents - is a big problem. Your thoughts?
You have a good point there about new signings not beeing to keen on playing for another team if they think they are big names.
However I don't think Baptista had much of a say in this deal, having said that it is only a one year deal which will be reviewed this summer so the chance would have been
that he would have never played for us at all but only for a Boro.
It is just a bit frustrating that with so much evidence that strikers tend to struggle in their first season in the EPL and with my hope of landing (I know I am dreaming) a proven striker that even such a striker might not bring too many goals next season. (Drogba, Cheva, Kuyt, Henry, Morientes etc they all struggled the first season. The difference with most of these guys is that they came into teams that did not have a scoring problem.)
I have to admit i do not remember Viera at 19/20. Form me the important part of losing Viera was his physical presence and I agree with you that his part Diaby has not completly shown yet, however he has shown, in my view, more range on the pitch in that he tries to run the ball down a bit more than Cesc, Rosicky and Hleb who all seem to play a bit less physical. Frankly I don't mean this like an insult but they seem like boys, where with diaby I can see him turn into the midfield presence we need against the Bolton's, Blackbruns and other teams who are not interested in playing footabll with us our way.
I just like the fact that Diaby can tackle and that he actually drives forward with the ball from midfield, rather than check back and pass sideways - something none of our other midfielders do enough - even fabregas (blasphomy I know but true).
Again I feel we have been missing that since Viera, even if he's not the same type of player.
Re: loaning out new signings - how would it look to them if we signed someone and then stuck them out on loan at Birmingham or Portsmouth - it might work with the kids, but any decent expereinced striker worth his salt would never agree to it. Torres for Pompey! ;)
I have to say that there might be some truth to what you say marintii,we could do with possibly loaning out new signings for a season.
I know that lots of people have sad that diaby is 'the new vieira',but i think they are different types of players.I think that vieira(at 19/20)was a more rounded player,he had more presence on the pitch,he was more powerful(lot more bookings as well!!)....diaby is a bit more silky,he could benefit from playing centrally alongside giberto.Similar to how vieira benfited from playing next to petit.

Very interesting posts guys - I especially am intrigued by the prospect of using Van Persie as a winger- he has done so to great effect for Holland and I really liked Van Basten tactic of havign Van persie and Robben swith wings during the game - it really unsettled defences.
Maybe if we can't get our hands on a quality winger - perhaps its an option. At least we know he would score goals!! I still like him up front, most notably forhis goals and all round technique - though it still remains to be seem if he can form a viable partnership with Henry - alot of his goals this season came when Henry wasn't playing.
Re: Rosicky - he has only scored consistanty for Czech republic because he plays in a much more advanced position for them - almost in the Bergkamp 3/4 forward position - with Dortmund he only got a couple a season from central midfield. I think he can contribute more and will get a few more next season but i'm still not convinced that he will get the amount of goals that Pires got.
I did like seeing him run in behind Everton' defence when he was played in by Baptista(i think), then he cut it back for that waste of space that is Aliadiere to blaze over the bar. He needs to do that way more often.
I also agree with the the comments about Pires/Ljundberg/Overmars not scoring from distance. Again it's not about that - but they made the runs in behind defences that allowed them to score from inside the box, and that is something that Hleb and Rosicky just don't do anywhere near enough...
Finally i think Babel would definitely be a super addition to the team, but think he will be very difficult to get given that he has just signed an extension to his contract!
I have to aree with 100% on your conclusion Nicky that unles we replace Viera and Pires we will continue to have problems in dominating oponents.
But trying to read between the lines with AW do you think he is going to replace these guys? I have to say for me Diaby is one of the high-lights of this season but I also have to say that I think he could benefit from some more experience. He is still potential but not yet proven.
On a different note, given that many (not all) foreign strikers need one season to adjust to the premiership, should we consider farming out our new prospects to an other EPL team for one year?
Is it possible Baptista would have benefited from one year at Portsmouth? The risk with a Babel or who ever could come in is that they too will need one season to adjust.
Even though Bendtner is quite tall,he's not prolific in the air(judging by his performances for birmingham)....he's more like a bergkamp type player. He likes the ball to feet, passing through balls to team mates, scoring goals, that's his style of play.I'm not saying he's useless in the air or anything, just that heading isn't his main asset.
I think that he could form a good partnership with henry or adebayor. He should come in pre season with the attitude of 'i deserve to start in the first team'.....make arsene HAVE to play him,by performing well in training and pre season games.
Here's a thought: Bendtner is 6'3" right? taller than Ade in that case. Big strong, danish players are known to be great with their head and physical. Put The great dane up front with TH. and bring V. persie out wide left to hit set pieces, crosses, and use his skill and pace (almost as a 3rd forward/winger)
I could see this a dangerous way to play.
I think what AW has been telling us recently is that he doesn't feel we need a lot of new players, so he must think he can find the right balance and formation of the one's we have. Just a thought on formation.
Lets be honest here, until we find a replacement for vieira and pires,we will struggle, i feel.We need a midfield powerhouse(as damian has already stated)and we badly need a wide player who scores goals and assists. The wide plyer is the more pressing concern.
Hleb and Rosicky ARE NOT wide players and they Don't score goals9at least hleb doesn't look like he can score goals)...
