Arsenal Message Board
well there was the debacle last weekend that we need not go into, but tonight in the CL liverpool beat PSV 3-0 away. we couldn't score against PSV away, lost 1-0 and seldom looked like scoring.
aside from the result, it showed just how far we've dropped in recent seasons. what it also showed is the deficiencies in AW and as a result, arsenal.
the three goals that liverpool scored tonight would never have been scored by arsenal. two headers from well delivered crosses from out wide and a long range effort. in terms of the two headed goals, they show why i fear arsenal weill not really be a threat in coming years.
not only do we not have strikers who can head the ball, challenge for headers or like getting in position to head the ball, we don't have any midfielders who do either. what's worse is that we have no natural wide players who can swing crosses in. they are all maleshift wide players.
therefore, that whole element of attack is gone. the effect of this is big. obviously we don't score anything from open play in the air, but it also means our attack is one-dimensional. we always play along the ground and cut back inside. very predictable. no matter how good we may be at it (not very these days) it's very predictable.
and i don't see AW changing soon. thus i fear we've come as far as we can go under AW. coz he won't change.
you guys who objected to me criticisng my beloved arsenal and the brilliant AW in the original post seemed to miss the point. AW has been brilliant for us but i really don't see how we can improve under him in the future.
why? because we haven't been good enough this year and he doesn't want to buy anyone for next year. injuries aside, it's our style of play that's letting us down. we are too one-dimensional. how many games have we drawn 1-1 at home after going 1-0 down? why? coz we can't break teams down. why? because we play the same way for 90 minutes.
we don't have natural wide men who can run down the wing and swing dangerous balls in. on top of that we don't have anyone who scores with their head anyway. one goes with the other i guess. we may play beautiful football but it's very predictable and it's very narrow.
teams put 10 behind the ball and still we try to go through the middle with little one-twos etc.
this is what i'm talking about. we don't change things up enough and we don't have the players to change things up. so if AW says he doesn't want to add much to his squad, how's this going to change?
i don't think the palyers are the problem, i think it's more the system, that's why i fear we've come as far as we can under AW

If nothing changes, you are 100% right.
I am still hoping, maybe naivly so, that he will still grow as a manger, he is smart enough to be able to do it, I just hope he is not stubborn enough not to do it.
Although I have my concerns about AW making noices in the direction of not making any changes in the summer there by indicating he thinks our current squad is capable of winning the EPL next season, despite supposedly having some funds available, whilst I think we could use one or two new players and get rid of 3 or 4 current ones...
I do not think the PSV game against Liverpool says much. PSV has been in a tail spin in the Dutch leaugue for a bit now and sqaudered a big lead and are now only 3 points in front of Ajax. Further more our big nemises Alex was out (possibly for the rest of the season)plus a number of other key players were missing as well.
A cup game means little (as was proven by our games against Liverpool where we beat them convincingly more than ones). In the league we, if we win our game in hand, can still be 3r.
AW's qualities as a manager will now be tested, in my view in two ways.
1. Does he have the motivational skills to get this team to play to their abilities between now and the end of this season, in which case we should finnish 4th or 3rd.
2. Can he tinker with the squad this summer to the extend that we are no talking about potential but rather start to deliver. For this to happen he might have to break some of his old habits and show us that he too can grow. He might have to "over" pay to get and experienced player and he might have to let some of his projects go.
He might even have to temporarely be happy to just play good football and get results instead of being happy with beautifull football with out results. A team that get results, gets confidence, a team that has confidence plays better football.
Maybe for a while he needs to tell his players: "You are Arsenal players, we do not except defeat under any circumstances, don't for a minute think I was serious when I told the press that some times playing beautifull football is more important that the result. I said that to get the heat of you guys, but fact is don't step of that pitch if we loose, because if you can still walk of the after a loss, you did not leave everything on the field."
I will blame Wenger for our current situation,i thing he is too dam relaxed. We need to start put some presure on him cum on guys we r not losers we r a team with potential n team like ours must win to earn respect in the football world.I recall when machester lost 2-1 at our home ground ferguson promess united funs that the mistek they made on the back would never happen again and he is keeping his promess. Can AW do the same?we make the same mistake on the back day in n day out, last year was the same thing n henry said that we were learning on the hard way.We all expected that this seson would be the one and again is similar to the previuous or even worst. As arsenal lover i refuse to bow my head on this situation n i think is time to start put some presure on AW,the guy needs to feel that his job is in danger so he will start to make some changes. We need to buy players that can make a difference like Quaresma from porto is time for arsenal to be were we belong in the top of primiership. The future is now not tomorrow.

It was a good win by Liverpool last night so you have to give them credit for that. However it was a much weaker side then we faced in both legs and they have no major injury problems. Also if we had Henry or RVP it would have been a different story as Baps doesn't seem able to hit a barn door at the moment! Excuses aside I think we have a reasonable squad with lots of talent but are missing a couple of world class players to help lift the youngsters. I sometimes think we take winning something for granted due to our success over the last 10 years, but I think we are on the right path. Maybe an Eto plus new keeper or Centre back would help? that way you could push Toure to Defensive midfield. Gilberto says he might fancy leaving and if he does this would be a good option in my opinion. The season is over for us now so lets look at the positives and get ready for the challenge next year!
psv missing many key players tonight, kind of like the position we were in when we played them!!!!
we belong there not psv....
we are better than liverpool and psv, we just are not healthy this season!
it happens, but hopefully this is the last year of massive injury to our core squad unit!

Yes, we were not healthy this season.
Many of our key players were injured.
The same went to PSV team who were thrashed 3-0 by Liverpool.
At least I will say that Alex was not around.
But we do have to look into our backup plan.
Do our reserve players good enough at the moment?
Yes Liverpool did embarrass you AGAIN. But why turn on your manager. It was only 2 or 3 seasons ago he was saying you could go all season without getting beat, lo he must be doint summit right!!!!!
