He was a good driver that is without question. But his claim to fame is for his "win at all costs mentality" which meant he would use any advantage legal or illegal to win.
Remember he won his first world championship at Benetton with a Ford powered engine.
The FIA support anything that Ferrari do, including cheating. Because it is about marketing, not sportsmanship. With Ferrari knocked back for a third year the FIA had to throw Maclaren out of the championship. The actual spying was being done by Alonso. Alonso who belongs to Briatore. The same Briatore who used a cheat car to win Schumacher his first Championship. (The car had traction control concealed software on it).
It is interesting to note that Ecclestone and Briatore are now partners in a football club.
