So where Pool have not competed, but still have won the CL.
Spurs haven't, yet they have won the League Cup.
Wigan haven't competed, yet they have won the FA Cup.
What have we won? Yet you think we have competed?
None of us have won the league either. The closest we came was 3rd.
Coming 2nd doesn't count in football. Whoever is second, is the loser.
To be fair I'd not read too much into this statement from Ayre. I'd go along with Jason in that I'd rather he either did not make a statement, or if he must (because he's answering a direct question) try not not putting his foot in his mouth by either promising top 4 and elevating expectations, or doing what he did which makes us look lets say less than ambitious in the short term. But end of the day, Ayre in the man wearing the suit, making sure the business side of LFC runs well, but he is not the one most likely to impact what goes on down on the pitch. That responsibility is with BR and the players themselves.
But I'd also point out, that IA seems to be a rather easy target for some, and I'm not sure that is entirely fair. He's the one who gets the blame for last summers transfers not going through, but is it really his fault that there was not enough money in the kitty? If its fair to have a go at him for one transfer window, surely we should give him praise for another, for example bringing in Courtinho for a song.
But if I'm in the mood to give IA a little credit, why not actually look at what his actual job is and ask is he doing a good job with that? Ian brought us Standard & Charter, brought us Warrior (okay some don't like the kit designs) and a host of other sponsorship deals that have turned a club in severe debt and on the brink of receivership to a stable going concern. He may not be the best to hang a quote on, and maybe someone should have the job of jumping in front of him every time a microphone is put in his face, but as far as his day job, not sure we have much to complain about.
Hmmmmm.......I thought it was Deloitte and The Telegraph doing most of the talking personally.
You were airing your views on Arsenals 'poor investments' Eric?
Jason, just a couple points. First off a question, what do you mean by "4" times? I count the bite and the racial slur, to add up to 2, but not sure what you mean by letting us down on another two occasions?
Second, I do agree with you 100% that you cannot keep a player who is unhappy. However making a judgement on whether a player is happy or not while he's 6000 miles away on international duty where all we get is what is printed in papers (which lets be honest maybe true, but often is not) is not the best way.
However I do think this needs to be sorted and sorted quickly, which is why I suggest the club make an effort to keep Luis onside. Others it seems have already made up their minds he's not worth the trouble, which is fair play to them, but for me you don't give up one of the worlds best players without a fight. So its time for a heart to heard, face to face, between the player and the club. If he's happy, fine, if he's not, what will it take to get him happy. If we can't make him happy, then , and only then, he goes to the highest bidder.
Good post and a football post!! Thank you.
To me I would go with what a player is worth to the buying club. Take RVP, he might have been worth 25-30 to Man U since with him they bought the PL title. I doubt he would have been worth 25-30 to Bayern. For me whether it is Higuain or Jovetic or any striker likely to be more talented than Giroud, they are worth quite a lot and to us and probably more than they would be worth to Man U who have a lot of depth at striker.
If a player is expected to improve the squad meaningfully a "premium" or "reach" should be considered IMO. In our case I would be much less likely to pay a premium for an attacking midfield player given our depth at that position than I would for a central striker since we only have Giroud at that position. 10 more PL goals could well have gotten us 2nd or 3rd and that alone should have or is worth a premium over 4th.
On Fellaini I find him hard to fit into our squad, although I read he would be transformed to a defensive midfield role which he is said to prefer. I don't think we would have to pay that much for a solid DM player no matter how much we need to find a replacement for Diaby or at least no matter how much we need a defensive midfield player. I would think we could buy a defensive midfield player for 15-20.
I think we will have to be willing to pay 25 million for a striker, and 10 for a keeper.
"ended up with egg on his face"
It looks like it's you and 'jul' with egg on your faces, slayer, everything she said was wrong, which makes you wrong too, so in your desperate haste to find a friend on here you stuck your foot in your mouth, again!
It is a massive concern Paddy, arguably in this system it is the centre halves that have the hardest job in the side, the full backs are gone most of the game and they play so wide and high, it is certainly a tough place to come in and learn the league! The keeper has to play as a sweeper so needs to be super confident and composed, all scary stuff to chop around with. Let us all hope that Aspas, Mchiktryiakyiatiruaian and Alberto are all hit the ground running men like Coutinho and Sturridge and not duds with potential like Borini, Allen and Assaidi.
I don't have any information for you on a left back, though I agree it's an area we would hope to create depth, unless Robinson has made good strides, or a potential CB might be able to double up there.
In regards to Sergi Canos, all I do know is that he is supposed to make something like 600K, which was said to be triple what Barca offered. Whether he jumped for the money alone, or there is a buy back clause, I don't know, all I know is what's above and that the Spanish sources describe him as "oozing with class". Going by that, sounds like a Sterling / Coutinho who can jump up rapidly..
It certainly seems that way at the moment, every 2 days we get another little snippet, with no response from Real. We do keep forgetting the window doesn't open till July 1st and that Madrid have no manager yet so are unlikely to sanction moves till that point. BUT, we see Zidane pressuring Bale every 5 minutes and talking about silly sums off money, we aren't seeing that for anyone else. Cavani's dad says he fancies Madrid though Cavani has suggested working under Mourinho is his preference, who knows. I have seen stories that Madrid plan to have a clear out and then buy Bale, Suarez, Cavani and Isco, it seems unlikely but we have seen them go out and get Ronaldo, Kaka, Albiol, Benzema and get snubbed for Ribery in a window before so I wouldnt bet against it!
I smell a bit of Bayern interest coming to the fore soon though, that move for Lewandowski looks dead and buried, they will be after another striker you would think and I doubt (despite being champions of everything) that they could attract Cavani, maybe Luis has always dreamed of playing for them too.
Something for the small minded on here..............who fixes the fixture list for each season? I mean, they don't pull it out of a hat. So who decides who plays who, and when; any idea? Perhaps its Paddy Power, or William Hill!!! With all due respect, I know old Rikki is good with figures and words(the only man, who could take a glass eye from a blind man, and convince him he looks better without it) but he cant be relied on for accuracy and source, of information. We still have no confirmation of his claim to have 'chinned Lee Bowyer' for example, so what chance of a confirmed answer here?
It's like chalk and cheese compared with last season, which is a very good thing. It's well balanced so we don't get all the top half clubs one after the other, or front loaded like last season. The hardest patch actually looks like between Christmas and new years, but by that point new players who might arrive, and the squad as a whole should be well bedded in, but I don think the turn will be the critical part of our season.
Just read that as part of the deal we had to pay Carroll £1m.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GET A GRIP OF LFC AND STOP THIS MADNESS
Funny how when the cacophony of blame for exhorbitant fees paid for players fell on Kenny and I was blaming Commoli for the debacle hardly anyone on the board agreed and most roundly criticised me for being blatantly biased in favour of Kenny and against Commoli.Perhaps the person/people who were so in favour of hiring Commoli should be at the very least publicly taken to task and further to that perhaps the owners should now implement a serious investigation of those dealings made by this man to be certain there are no legal grounds upon which to prosecute him for fraud. I mean the people on the other side of the deal for example the deal to bring Andy C to Anfield are hardly what u could call saints now eh. This should be done and done openly in view of the fans to hopefully act as a deterrent to this kind of debacle ever occurring again.
It's HILARIOUS how gillian has to pretend to be someone else since his wife caught him being a twot and told him off!
Now, not only does 'Jack S' defend 'dodgybanana', but 'baldrick' is doing it too ... can 'the Londoners' be far off?
Gillian lost his cool with me when I PROVED he'd never been anywhere near Australia, and lost it even further when I PROVED his shipwreck story was complete tosh.
Now he's so far in my pocket we have threads like this, trying to convince someone, anyone, that anything he says is real!
You'll be telling us next you don't have a comb-over, and don't look like a child molester!
Slayer never watched the game, he never does, why would he watch Japan-Mexico?
Mr Matchcast strikes again!
I am kinda scared of what we might do with that £40m+, at the moment, the Aspas' and Coutinho's are great because if they flop it isnt such a big deal but if they tear it up, then it is twice as rewarding. I would actually be loathe to see us go in for a £30m replacement if it does actually happen. For £40m we could buy a quality striker, a left back and a centre back with us having outlayed nothing in the window.
