This is a mix of what I remember reading some time back, backed up by a quick search on wikipedia.

M is for McLaren of course, from the name of Kiwi team founder Bruce McLaren, an F1 driver in the 60s who drove for Cooper before founding his own team. All of the team's first cars were number Mxx: the M7, M14 and M19 were the most prominent of the early models, then the M23 won McLaren's first two championships in 1974 (Emerson Fittipaldi) and 1976 (James Hunt).
The P4 stands for 'Project 4', designating McLaren cars since 1981, due to the arrival of a new design team and the takeover by Ron Dennis.
Originally, MP4 stood for 'Marlboro Project 4', after the title sponsor. In 1997, that title sponsor changed, and since, the M stands for McLaren.

This pales in comparison to Schumacher's park job at Monaco last year. It appeared that Alonso, even after the lollipop was raised, delayed his exit from the pitstop, just long enough to disrupt his own teammate's chances of a final hot lap. Not only that, but when he re-entered the track, it was right in front of Raikkonen, who was on a flyer. It surely caused Raikkonen to lose enough time to fall behind Heidfeld and possibly Hamilton. I wonder if all the Schumacher bashers from last season will be commenting on this gross unsporting behavior by Alonso.

Turned the tv on to watch the Monaco qualifying and what did we get. Hamilton blah, Hamilton blah blah, Hamilton blah blah blah. Now Hamilton's doing a great job in his debut year (or Alonso a #$%$ one perhaps) but my god what ever happened to impartiality?

Also amazing how Steve Rider was STILL going on about Schu's infamous stoppage last year in qualifying saying 'how it nearly destroyed his reputation'??????? Sorry pal but the whole commentary team's living on cloud cuckoo land if they think that. Obviously, The DC incident today and the blatant intentional blockage of the car behind was held nowwhere near on the same level as Schu's misdameanor by Rider and Co, surprise surprise. Pathetic idiots and what a bunch of biased #$%$. Looks like that mute button may come in handy after all.

More to the point, Bob, the McLaren MP4/21 rarely finished a race! Let alone win one!
And here we are in 2007, arguably the unluckiest man in the paddock has left the Woking-based team, and has been replaced by Alonso. And, behold, a miracle: The MP4/22 went 6 or 7 races before encountering its first technical problem! After three races, my eyebrows had risen above my lounge's ceiling!

However, I'd be more inclined to turn the TV off if McLaren WERE banned. Cos it's unfair on the whole team, when clearly only one man acted independently.
It's a sad tradition now that once a championship becomes interesting, politics spoil it. This tradition dates back to 1982. It's a long and tragic story which I won't tell now. All the F1 racing fans out there probably know it anyway.

Not sure if you read the news from Monday I think.

It was actually a reporter that made up this one. Anything for a story these days. It's sad that Alonso's and de la Rosa's names were dragged through the mud on this one. It should be interesting because there is "new" evidence and we really won't know about it until tomorrow. Oh well, it could be over soon.

Journalist admits Alonso-de la Rosa email fake
    Mon 10 Sep, 10:26 AM

A journalist has admitted that he invented the contents of the supposed email that may be part of FIA's 'new evidence' against McLaren.

As the espionage saga scaled new heights in the Monza paddock, La Gazzetta dello Sport published this exchange between Pedro de la Rosa and Fernando Alonso.

But Italian journalist Pino Allievi has now confessed to concocting the exchange in order to make his article about the existence of the email 'more credible'.

"I made a free interpretation of what might have been said in the email," he told AP, insisting that the hypothetical nature of the drivers' dialogue was mentioned on his article published on Friday.

The interesting thing is what I've already read in other posts, McLaren coundn't buy a win with Kimi driving and now they're either winning or on the podium every race....go figure.

Arse starts with 'a', elbow starts with 'e'. Unfortunately, your so bloody stupid you wouldn't know the difference.
    Disgrace to the sport? Why?

If you want to talk disgrace, maybe the once named BAR should have had their arses kicked out of F1 for cheating with a hidden fuel tank, or Renault for using computer controlled TC, or Ferrari for using flexi wings (which, if you were to believe what the FIA stated at the time, was legal, which kind of contradicts their actual ruling in the F1 rule book). Blatant cheating, but after a reprimand and a 'sit out' by Button, all was well and the fuel tank saga was forgotten about. Renault became masters of computer software self destruction, and Ferrari......well, they are the FIA, so anything they do wrong gets brought in as a new 'allowable' condition/option. Go figure.
McLaren are at most, or until proof shows otherwise, guilty of not contacting the FIA immediately when finding that Mike Coughlan was in receipt of technical data given to him by Stepney.
    Consider that a FULL TRUTH.

Very well put.................plus as I have said else where - if the FIA ban McLaren for 2008, it COULD have repercussions for the factory workers too. And why should they be punished for what the 'suits' have done?

Scrap this year and set McLaren a points defisit of mayeb whatever they 'win' the title with this year - same with the drivers?

19.1 covers racing only, a team can use as many test drivers as it likes through the season, but only four drivers are allowed to race for a team within a campaign

article 6, the point of note is 'taking into consideration all the results obtained during the Events which have actually taken place' as this covers two evetualities

the event of a race either being halted before points can be awarded (covered in another article) or not being run at all

the second eventuality is that in the event of a tie in points after the championship rounds that the driver with the most wins will be crowned champion, and if the number of race wins is equal then second places and so on

the event of a race either being halted before points can be awarded (covered in another article) or not being run at all

a drivers tally is his tally regardless of how many teams he drives for

and a teams tally is the combination of the drivers scores per race regardless of which driver scores the points

I totally agree with you on this.
All teams including Ferrari would know what they incurr if caught with sensitive information from other teams...
But taking a team like Laren out of the competition would be a shame to the sport... i dont think the FIA would take them out altogether....

how come is it taking them so long to come up with a ruling anyway?

Big ferrari fan...........BUT there is no way 'WE' deserve to win anything! OK, if we were a close second or third or whatever then maybe, but the car is not good, too long, unreliable and not particularly quick.

Take ALL McLarens points, take enough points from the drivers to still make is possible for one of them to win the drivers title........would love to say scrap BOTH Championships but that is pretty pointless. Not sure what the FIA will do tomorrow - not sure they can do much, ban McLaren for 2008 and it will throw the sport into further termoil, let alone any employment issues that may occur with the factory workers.

These are dark days for what was once a wonderful sport.........now dicated by money, sponsors.............and Hamilton this and Hamilton that..........

Still like to watch if I'm at home - but no more neck-breaking to get back if I'm out. MotoGP on the otherhand...............
