I think some of you Best fans are missing the point of many of the comments that have been made. I think these comments are not born from a lack of respect for someone who has just died, it's the way some people in the footballing world are trying to make out he was some sort of saint, some sort of remarkable man.

He was not a remarkable man, he was a remarkable footballer, truely world class, but nothing more.
As a man he was strictly third division.
Ask yourself the question: Would you hold him up to your kids as a role model.

I think the Maradonna analogy is very apt given his problems with drugs and alcohol abuse. Also, given the "Hand of God" incident one would also have to question Maradonnas attitude towards fair play and honesty. On the whole a similarly poor role model as GB for anyones kids. However, the great Pele was truely a remarkable player and has proved to be a great ambassador for the game and his country.
While all three players can be compared in terms of footballing ability, I think Pele stands head and shoulders above GB and DM as a human being.
As and when the time comes for his passing, and one hopes that will not be for a good while yet, then Pele will be truely and rightly mourned around the world as a great man and a remarkable footballer.

Am I the only football fan in this country who is starting to get a little fed up of everyone trying to cannonise the late George Best. Sure he was a great footballer and I feel sorry for his family in their time of grief but ask yourself this question, would you hold him up as a roll model for your kids?
Not only did he drink his own liver into submission, he then went on to drink someone elses into submission too. One wonders if he had not been "The Great George Best" would the doctors who made the decision on who should receive a transplant have declined him the liver in favour of someone who would have treasured the second change.
Despite being married to several beautiful women he failed to stay faithful to any of them. Prefering a high life of wine, women and more wine and more women.
People seem to give more credit to a persons dribbling, passing and shooting skills than they do to loyalty, fidelity, honesty and common decency. Why is this?
To conclude, one would have to say that in my opinion as a footballer George Best had few equals but as a man he was strictly third division.

I feel sorry for his family, I think the idiots who did not respect the silent tribute at Man City were out of order. However, I would question the need to have had the tribute other than at Old Trafford where Best was obviously well loved and remembered.
As a footballer George Best had few equals however, as a man he was strictly third division.

Several people have said in this thread that we should show respect for the man because he has died.
If you extend this "logic" we should also show respect for Attila The Hun, Caligula, Vlad The Impaler, Judas Escariot, Dr Crippen, Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Fred West, etc. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying George Best should be compared with mass murderers, I use these names merely to make a point because they are all dead and all names people will recognise.
People do not deserve our respect just because they have managed to die, this is a skill we all have, and will all eventually accomplish.
People deserve respect for the way they live and sadly, on balance, George Best does not exactly rate up there with Florence Nightingale, Gandi, Princess Diana, Mother Teressa or even my nan.

Totally agree, Big Dave has been a great servant for the club. His attitude and the way he plays his football are exemplary, firm but fair, total commitment, a true professional. He will be sadly missed at the Hawthorns by both the fans and his fellow players. I hope the club can find someone to step into his not inconsiderable boots and keep the squad inspired and motivated especially as we seem to be heading for another difficult end of season scramble for points and premiership survival.

Best of luck Darren and God Bless. Derby are lucky to have you.
