Bolton Wanderers Message Board
I feared this might come at some point but not as it has.
Sturridge out for another 6 weeks at least
Gerrard also out for 6 weeks with a hamstring problem.
A tough run of fixtures coming up too. Lots of games against the so called title / top 4 contenders and in a short space of time.
We are really short of quality in midfield and our centre forward. Lucas who has been awful in my opinion needs to really step up as does Allen and Henderson. We need more from the front line too. Suarez needs the ball in the form he's in and we do not want him to become an isolated figure.
I hope Rodgers has his fingers ready on the old credit card button as we really need some reinforcements with or without the injuries but some real quality in midfield would be a huge and much needed lift
True, but I wish we had January's fixtures instead of the Christmas run that we do have. At least there shouldn't be any motivation issues!
No Agger on Saturday either Jason. Perhaps he is listening!
Injuries are becoming a worry now but Allen has picked his game up a bit too.
the thing that impressed me most (apart from Suarez) was our possession stats. That's what I want to see week in week out. Sadly we don't but I wonder if Rodgers like you Jason has seen enough of Lucas to be a bit worried?
Agreed on the Norwich goal. Poor defending full stop. Agger was guilty of being on his heels and the guy got that little half yard in front of him. It's a bad habit he has. Great on the ball but gets stuck on his heels and becomes a bit slow to react.
Well done Jason you've called it right. Lucas has been dropped and I'm encouraged by the current stats showing us having 61% possession. That's the kind of thing I want to see.
Suarez seems to like Norwich
Ok but at least we agree generally. I just feel there is something fundamentally wrong somewhere. We target and buy players with a pretty decent pedigree and they turn out to poor or not suited and it's frustrating.
Allen for example was a key player in a Swansea side that relied on movement and passing. We don't see it, although I do not blame him completely for that.
Aspas came as a player with some potentially and a technically astute player. Struggling.
Sterling is a most promising youngster. Fallen off the rails some what. Suso too and Pacheco now gone was the same.
I can keep going all they way back through Benitez's time and beyond. It's weird how we struggle to get value for money.
My dead wood comment is related to the number of squad players that do not contribute, even when given a chance to. I'm beginning to put Lucas back into that category.
I don't know what it is but I cannot, for the life of me, understand why we buy so many players that turn out to be a waste of time. It's problem that goes back many years and it's still here now.
I don't like Moses, loan deal yes but I don't think he brings anything to the table. Aspas, where is he now? While Sakho and Cissokho don't look right at all but they need time. Allen as well, doesn't appear to be the player he was a Swansea. It seems we have to buy 4 duff players for every decent one.
i didn't see the game as I was completely off grid but it sounds awful. We still haven't been able to shake the dead wood out of the squad. There were / are too many that shouldn't be there and managed to hang on for whatever reason. It's not good.
Moses dear me. Chelsea don't off load players for no reason.
Lucas the same in my book. He's not suited to the PL. That's being polite
Wanyama was a big miss in my opinion. Should have at least made an effort to sign him. Lucas, as far as I'm concerned had better up his game considerably or he can leave if the opportunity arises.
I agree on Allen. he needs game time and he also needs to up the anti. He made no friends missing that sitter. He was under a bit of scrutiny as it was / is and missing that will have done him no favours with the Kop or his own confidence levels. Simple fact is we need him, and more.
I certainly hope there's some kind of plan for a long term replacement for Gerrard? I do not want to be in a position where we are still reliant on the guy to the extent we are next season. I'm not saying he needs to be phased out, That depends on what he can offer but our midfield is already too weak (for where we want to be), it needs a bolster and we must think long term.
For me the decision is easy in some respects
You play your best 11 available 11 week in week out. No reason not to as the game load isn't excessive.
Forward line of Sturridge and Suarez with Coutinhio in the hole.
Back for of Glenda, Skrtel, Agger and bets available left back. Toure should and will give Agger a run for his money. Sakho and Cissokho need to catch up.
Big question for me is the best balance in midfield. Gerrard plays as he's our best. Henderson next and then for it's a toss up between Lucas and Allen. But as you know this is the area that bugs me the most. Do they play as a three across the pitch or two and one or two and two with Gerrard and Coutinhio pushing on a bit.
It's tough and we look weak on the left.
True the move was aggressive and I like "the go for it " but it did surprise me none the less, especially at a time where I thought we would try and dominate possession.
Good point Lukaku, he ran the channels behind the full backs very well. and Everton put the ball there. That is one problem with pushing full backs on. They drag one central defender out and that means someone needs to fill the hole.
My opinion of Lucas from a few seasons ago has resurfaced. He's not at the level we want or need. He is slow, commits awfully soft and un-needed fouls and was booked for it again at the weekend. I lost count of how many clumsy challenges he made where the striker had his back to goal. he's also anonymous when we have the ball. That's just not good.
Agreed Agger falls into the band wagon bracket because he can play the ball on the floor with his feet etc. That's enough to win many over, me included usually but he's dropped a clanger or two as well.
It is harsh but the standard of football this season has dropped again, right across the league.
I know I'm talking tough but as I said I see an opportunity and I want the club to grasp it. Not roll over in a whimper as we've done before. The problem is that you can often get shouted down for having an opinion against one of the darlings.
Fair point on Barry. I thought he was excellent until he moved to right back. Everton lost something in midfield at that point. While I can see why Rodgers pushed Moses we may have lost more in the middle and we did lose a goal as a result. Could have lost more as Lukaku steamed through once as did the other Everton chap who I have no chance of typing his name.
They are fair points and perhaps balance is a key here. I cant think of many if not any PL midfielders at the moment that are at a level that makes me look twice. Ramsey perhaps but I have a biased Welsh view and he is the type of player I like to watch. Toure when on pomp too I guess. I'm begging for a midfielder who will sit there in the middle and dictate games. Allow Gerrard to do what he does best and that is cause problems from unexpected areas. I like what Allen can do (apart from miss sitters) but he's not that player either.
Rodgers tactics demand a fast paced game with plenty of movement and passing. We don't do it. When I watch a game one of the first things I look for is how a team keeps hold of the ball and manages possession (with and without the ball). Everton did it better than us on Saturday and to me that isn't a good thing. Honestly we haven't done that all season either.
Tactics are interesting and yes flexibility is important. But to what extent is my concern. I don't we've got our Plan A sorted 100% yet but we've seen a number of different shapes already this season. I think that takes something away from the team. I think there's been plenty of evidence to make that point. I like the idea of having one system, "this is what we do, you counter it" Rather than trying to out think the opposition just out play them.
Hi Paddy. I find the Gerrard band wagon is a little frustrating at times. Stating a negative opinion is seriously frowned upon. He is a legend no doubt but I honestly don't think he's all that of a player. Give him room and he'll rip anyone to shreds granted. West Brom most recently but when games are tight with a pressing midfield he's rubbish. I could write essays on what I don't like about him in those situations. I would also note that it's situation that becomes clearer in an England side who are in all honesty pretty poor.
Sorry for the harsh words but I'm saying it as I see it. He is however our best central midfielder at present. No doubt.
Lucas has never convinced me. Stats say otherwise but I just don't like what I see. Henderson is all effort and will be an ok player and a grafter but is he the quality we really want in there? Allen, again he will be a good player but needs that quality alongside him. That way he can relax a bit. But can we carry him?
Another point on the game. I thought it was a slightly bizarre decision to take a midfielder off, an area where we'd struggled all game to put Moses on. Unsurprisingly Everton got their goal as we were adjusting to it. Again Gerrard was out of position on more than one occasion allowing a free run for Everton on the back 4 and goal. Agger too I agree Jason.
It's a harsh reality that we need to seriously look at this area. Please note that neither Benites or Houllier played Gerrard in central midfield. As I've said elsewhere we have an opportunity this year, perhaps one that wont come round for a while again. It must be grasped. Even if we do manage a European spot for next season. This midfield will not cut the bacon at that level. We will be torn to shreds I'll tell you now.
As a final note Rodgers is becoming a little too ready to change systems for my liking. Stick to one system but feel free to move players in and out of that system to change the dynamic to the game and team. That's my preferenc
Yes I should have mentioned Borrell too. There's obviously something they're not happy with.
I wonder if it's something to do with the attitude of some of the younger players. Sterling has a past, while Pacheco and Suso to name two have gone completely off the boil and are not showing anywhere near their promise.
Lukaku gave Skrtel a problems all afternoon. He struggled with his pace more than anything.
I'll say it again. We were hopeless in midfield. Simply failing to retain possession and kill the game. Agreed. Lucas is just not good enough. Apart from a few blocks what does he offer apart from a constant stream of poor tackles and fouls in bad positions? One lead to Everton's first goal. When in possession he does nothing. I've been saying these same comments for years. Allen struggled because he was chasing all afternoon as was Henderson. The game was too tight for Gerrard to influence. He thrives in space but cut that out and he's hopeless. Some needed to put their foot on the ball and basically take charge. It didn't happen.
Flannagan had a nightmare against Berkley but when he moved inside he got much better.
Agreed on Glenda marking Lukaku at a set piece? Bonkers!
The more I see of Sturridge the more I like. He retains possession, holds the ball up and of course scores goals.
We were lucky and unlucky. yes it should have been a red card and the lost Baines another part of their supply line but they had more of the ball and more of the chances. Glad to see some grit to get a point in the end but had we been better in midfield we would have walked that game. Retain the ball and with Suarez and Sturridge life will be a peach!
Ah ha got there in front of you for a change ;o)
That doesn't sound like enough to sack someone. We lose targets all the time. Most clubs do with say 2-3 clubs getting almost everyone. They being the two Spanish giants and Bayern. Everyone scraps for it.
To me it sounds like there's something not happening to plan or they want a change for some reason. That surprises me as I though Rodgers had aligned the youth system with first team affairs and McParland was happy with it.
It's a strange one.
Yes I'm being harsh and there's anumber of reasons for that. Firstly bar a few moments I don't think we've played to our potential. Second. We need to and quickly there are harder games to come. Thirdly, I believe our position is slightly false as we haven't played many of the so called tougher teams yet. Based on current form that's a good thing. I also see an opportunity. Results are going our way and we must grasp the chance of getting into the top four.
I agree that Rodgers has dropped some tactical clangers, perticularly favouring the 3 centre half thingy over other players in the squad. You're right with Alberto and I also think it wasn't wise that Wisdom wasn't given an outing. Where's Kelly? He obviously knows things we don't but based on their known abilities etc. and hindsight playing 2 of them over the 3 central defenders would have been a better way forward. Maintain the shape etc etc.
But we have won games even though I have been far happy with what I've been watching. You can only win the games you play. But we musn't lose this opportunity that currently exists within the league. We play less games than most CL challenging sides and others are not picking up the results they'd expect hope for. Bust a gut, do everything possible to play to your potential. I don't want to be here in May saying so near, yet so far. That was Benitez's best play.
Playng for Wales will help Allen. Firstly feeding off Ramsey (and Bale perhaps) and secondly adding some grit to his game because we are rubbish.
Allen will thrive in a team that has good movement. At the moment we aren't at that point and he suffers as a result. Just watch how many times a defender will carry the ball out and beckon for someone to make themselves available or a full back hoofs it.
Just heard that Frank McParland has been sacked.
I'll be interested to see / hear what's going on here as I thought he was doing a decent job and was part of the youth system being aligned with the first team.
Anyone know anything?
