Tottenham Hotspur Message Board
I agree it is too early to write us of. And I am not being cynical when I say that even if we finish 3rd I would be happy with our season and hope we press on building a team capable of winning the PL or CL and that means buying 1 or 2 players (striker, DM).
It just feels a bit iffy that we have not been convincing in our last 2 big tests (City and now Pool away).
No better moment than now to beat Man U and rebuild confidence.
I think we missed leadership in midfield today. Flamini has that personality.
It also seemed all our players where below par, perhaps as you say an effect of being shell shocked.
Wenger has a job to do for the next game.
(no excuses but... we could have used Walcott, Flamini and Ramsey today.)
We were not mentally prepared if you ask me.
Out managed, out played. Simple as that. 3rd place would be a great result IMO.
Back to the old ways, no bite no spine, no mid-game management by Wenger. I feel bad for the lads they look like deer in the head-lights.
Will Wenger's post game comments include "we need to show a resonce in the next game"?
Well done Liverpool.
Miracles exist but this game doesn't feel like one.
That is such a difficult question. maybe we should keep it simple and just look at results. Oh, #$%$, wait, I guess we already do look at results. Maybe we skip this question it is just soooo difficult to wrap once little head around.
I appreciate your effort at a reply but I think once you start factoring in results you start to include other factors than the players on the payroll. These include quality of the manager, injuries, scheduling, referee etc. etc.
My question was about the players on the roster before a ball is kicked and before any player in injured. It might be that you find it difficult to develop an opinion on that but don't come with a pseudo intellectual reply about results. Results are an outcome of factors not exclusively limited to the depth or quality of a squad.
Now if you prefer to debate which team is the best (team including IMO, manager, backroom staff etc) or which team has the best results than that is a different discussion which could be finalized in a rather convincing manner after the last game of the season. Not that is isn't fun for us to have a strong argument that we have the best team thus far.
But because IMO we have the 3rd best squad should we finish higher than 3rd that would be in large part as a result of the added value on Wenger not because our squad is better or deeper than Chelsea's or City's.
Moureen keeps putting pressure on City by claiming they have by far the best squad in PL. We all know his mind games and to take his statements with a grain of salt. But who really has the best squad? Not to be confused with who plays the best football (we all know that is Arsenal ;-)
I think there is not much between the squads of City and Chelsea. In fact I think in goal Chelsea have the edge and in midfield also, albeit not by much. Up front there is little doubt that City have the better squad but no much better IMO than Liverpool's.
To me there is no squad that is by far the best, like Bayern in Germany, but if I had to rank them and when healthy;
6. Man U
March is tough moth as well. I hope Wenger will play Moureen at Stamford bridge for a draw and maybe grab the win on a counter. With Theo missing this will be hard. Moureen is predictable in his tactics to some extend but his teams are so disciplined. They wait for the other team to get confident in attack and frustrated with not scoring so they push too many men forward and leave themselves exposed to the counter. If we are still ahead of Chelsea and if we are capable we should take a the same approach and be happy with a draw (but be ready to punish them on the counter.)
If only we had a fast and deadly striker ;-)
I agree with John. That is why I think the Liverpool game next weekend is bigger than the Bayern game(s) or the Liverpool FA game. I think the Bayern game could be a great learning experience but is likely a bridge too far. We just have to hope we don't get our confidence destroyed by Bayern.
The game against Man U is significant IMO because they have become a bit of an angst gegner for us. It is a team we should beat but, because of fear (?), we seem to underperform against them a win would go a long way.
Can you imagine what we could have done had we got a top quality striker??
We have our best chance in the last many (8?) years to win the PL and anyone who counts us out does so at his own risk ;-)
Injuries are part of football and all teams have them, we are finally deep enough to be able to cope with them pretty well.
Chelsea appear to be by far the best managed team in the PL, Jose proved that once again. If you compare the spanking most teams visiting City received including ourselves, to Chelsea's result last night there is little argument to be had about who the best manager in the PL is. Oh how I hope Wenger will learn how to beat Jose but soon.
City and Arsenal are far more exciting teams to watch though and Moureen still has to prove he can be a great manager for more than 2 or 3 seasons with one team, something Wenger and SAF have proven.
Good result for us!!!!!
The Frenchman admitted that he did know about the Swedish midfielder’s back problem when it showed up on the medical, but that it was too late. He claimed that he would not have gone through with the deal if he had known about the situation earlier, but that it was too late on deadline day and it was either Kallstrom or nobody by that time. He even considered cancelling the deal on the day.
Wenger explained, “It crossed my mind. But I would not have signed him if we’d had two or three more days to do something. It was 5 pm on Friday night, so it was sign him or nobody. We had to sign him in these conditions. We might need the players in March or April, you know, so it is difficult.”
Let's not forget that Stoke also beat Chelsea at home and held both Everton and Southampton at home. They are for real at home and we better hope they will have a bad spell by the time we go visit them. You fall behind to these type of teams and you are in trouble.
Every time I think your messages can not gt any sadder or less informed they do :-)
Wenger admitted he knew he signed an injured player.
But I am sure he is a great signing. Shrewd bit of business because we are not paying for his salary as long as he is injured.. He was just signed to keep fans like you happy.
Why are you going on about Draxler?? Did you not say we should not pay millions for an unproven kid?? It must be hard for you to keep track of you nonsense and your opinion.
I am sure Kallstrom will be a great signing. Won't you look silly if Draxler proves his potential and I didn't say we should sign Draxler but we should have done better than signing a player with a back injury who possible won't play for us at all. If Giroud gets injured we are in trouble but I guess you don't get that.
I think it might take time (too much time?) to figure out for Moyes how to work Mata and Rhooney into the same squad but he has too find a way. He can't leave Rooney on the bench if you ask me. I also think Man U have more problems than Mata could be expected to fix. Give Mata, Rooney and RVP time to gel. It seemed to me that today Rooney fell back a little too much. I hope for Man U that Felaini's return might stabilize midfield a little although he has not shown with confidence thus far.
Painful loss for Man U and the gap to 4th might be getting bigger. I am not looking forward to going to Stoke ourselves, I think they also beat Chelsea in Stoke if I recall correctly.
I can only see 1 reason we signed Kallstrom late on the final day and that is that we could not get who we really wanted (once again). It would be hard to believe we could not have signed Kallstrom a few weeks ago because i don't even think Exeter would want him or any other club for that matter.
We continue to be inapt in transfer windows of late where we seem to think it is like Christmas sale, you have to wait for the last moment to get the best prices even if your first choice is gone.
And lets not forget, it has been a glaring need for us to sign a striker last summer, something slightly ignored after the brilliant Ozil signing, now once again we failed to sign a striker.
I am worried about this summers window even if we finish in the top 3. Prepare for an other pathetic showing of our club and don't expect a striker befitting a club with aspirations to win a major trophy.
Kallstrom seem like a nice guy and nice guys don't finish 1st.
I hope if this rumour is true that this is a loan deal. Spending transfer funds on this guy at his age and with his talent would appear a waste of money. I hope this is not the type of Wenger deal of old, nl a 3 year deal £50k per week and no body wants him and we keep paying him whilst he doesn't get any starts to speak of.
Sylvestre, Park, etc.

I am familiar with the problem of too large a squad but thin on depth. I have to say that I always liked Valencia. Is he world class no. Is he quality, to me yes. He might not be a starter but is good squad player, works hard, helps on defending and doesn't drift to the middle too often.
Many wanted to get rid of Rosicky a few seasons ago, but for me he is our Valencia, he is great to have in the squad, is a quality player and a good option to have even if he doesn't start ahead of the Wilshires, Ozils and Cazorla's. We don't drop too much with him coming into the game.
