So much for Pastore... PSG have just snapped him up for 40 million quid. Looks like we're stuck with over-the-hill Lampard for yet another season. Come on Jose, make a bid and take him to Real!

Drogba has been a fine player for Chelsea since he signed in 2004, but the time is right for him to move on. Chelsea MUST start thinking of the future, not cling to the past. Drogba represents the past and the present but not the future. I'm not talking the next season or two but over a longer period. The future should mean in five years time or more not in the next two years. Chelsea desperately need freshening up. They WERE the best side in England from 2005 to 2008, but since then United have caught up and overtaken Chelsea. Chelsea therefore need to grab some initiative and respond to the gauntlet United have thrown down at their feet - by buying not just more players but YOUNGER players.
Chelsea need to plant the seeds of a new side, they need to show faith in their existing youngsters by calling them all back instead of loaning them out, but they must also buy more young players......players like Neymar, Falcao who represent what Chelsea should see as potential stars of the future. The side also needs an injection of pace and some 'zip' which has been lost over the last three years.
Chelsea must respond to United's current dominance otherwise next season will just be a procession for United - and this is boring for everyone else. No one likes an uncompetitive league where there's one team head and shoulders above the rest.......that's why last season was vintage (yes, really).
People remember a season when two or three clubs went to the wire, they quickly forget (unless they are fans of said club) a season where one team stays at the top after christmas, until the end of the season.
Roman now needs to put his money where his mouth is and close the gap that has begun to open up between Chelsea and United. Drogba also probably needs a new challenge as he has nothing to prove to Chelsea fans - he is already among the greatest strikers to have played for the club.

Heidi and Afiss, agree 100%. Lampard has given his best to us, six seasons at 20+ goals from midfield, a record 600 consecutive appearances, and he is a blues legend. I think it is time to move Lampard and Drogba on. See my other thread regarding Drogba.

Bad news! My advise would be to play Luiz in a holding midfield role and keep Alex at the club. see how it goes. play a 4-2-3-1 and Mikel and Luiz can play beside each other. maybe it won't work, but one never know. Lampard maybe only be on form for 1st half of season and then start to slip away due to fatigue, and we will sign another centre mid anyway. I only hope that when Essien returns it'll a boost to the team half way through the season and help us through the finish line for trophies.

I'm sure many other rival fans feel the same way as you John. He is indeed a blues legend. But the time is right for him to move on, especially considering the Marseille rumours. I for one have received my money's worth from many a game at the Bridge with the Drog's contribution alone - the wonderstrike against Everton, the lethal near-post finish past Reina in the CL, and many more!

I'm excited to hear about you lot being linked with Mata, and it would be wonderful to see a player of that ability in London, but do you think your Gaffer will bite? After the u21, surely his stock is high and Wenger is notorious for refusing to buy pl;ayers right after a summer tournament.

  • Yury Zhirkov Returning to Russia?

Widespread reports in Moscow claim the defender-cum-midfielder is on the brink of securing a £13million move to Anzhi, whose defender, Rasim Tagirbekov, has claimed Zhirkov has met with the club's squad and head coach Gadzhi Gadzhiev.

Tagirbekov said: "Of course, Yury is a great player. Everybody in the team is very glad that he will join our club.

"This transfer will strengthen Anzhi a lot. Zhirkov has already managed to talk to the team's head coach Gadzhi Gadzhiev and practically all the players."

According to Bobsoccer.ru, Zhirkov himself confirmed he had travelled to Russia, saying: "I have arrived for two days to spend my weekend here."

The sale of Zhirkov would free up space in Chelsea's 25-man Premier League squad for another foreigner, with the club weighing up a third bid for Tottenham's Luka Modric.

Zhirkov, who turns 28 this month, has struggled to establish himself in the Blues' first team since moving from CSKA Moscow two years ago.

A knee injury hampered his progress but he has ultimately failed to depose Ashley Cole as first-choice left-back or force his way into midfield.

Why on earth would you get rid of Bosingwa, Essien, and Anelka? Bosingwa has been recovering from a major injury and before that was a good right back that offered a great attacking threat on the right wing. Anelka can play anywhere across the front line and has pace, he is tricky and can beat players and can finish. Essien is a powerhouse and every team in Europe wants him and pundits and fans alike all rate him, so why do you want to get rid?
