Meant to add, Defoe's not scored in the last 8 games, most of our goals in that time have come from Bale and Dempsey, so personnel isn't necessarily the issue, it's how we maximise the players we can use.

Bum bum bum bum bum. Hopefully Defoe's injury won't give him a long layoff, but what formation do we go for without him? In particular for the next few games while we wait for Ade to return.

I'd be inclined to push Dempsey forward but with Holtby or perhaps even Bale close behind (with the other one on the wing) for Newcastle, and for Lyon I reckon I'd give Obika a run.

    Thoughts?

Please don't turn this into another "I know better than Levy & AVB, if they'd got a striker like I told them to we'd be ok" thread, we all know our squad weaknesses and it's typical this happens in the first game after the window closes, but sulking about it isn't going to help.

Interesting... Sunderland used to be known (by me, I'm not pretending it got any further than that) as Northern Spurs due to the number of our old players they had. Do you think this transfer window makes Newcastle the NE Arsenal??

Alan, normally I find your 'behind the scenes insights' entertaining, but don't you ever put my name in the same sentence as 'gunners shirts' again, you hear me!

SB, Holtby looks like taking a playmaker role, or at least the link-up player - he's described as a midfielder/forward on the reports I've seen, but as I said before I've not seen much of him previously. When he came on at the weekend it seemed to be to allow Bale to move more centrally, perhaps there are thoughts of him filling that spot? Not sure how I feel about that, he likes to be the hero which isn't really doable for a winger so it might be an astute move... or he might need a manager to put him in his place and make him stay there, I can't decide!

John, I imagine that Holtby would generally be taking the place of a striker, either with Defoe or Ade being picked to play ahead of him based on the type of team (Ade for physical, Defoe for speedy).

As I mentioned, I've heard noises about our academy having loads of players ready to blood, maybe now's the time to do that with the likes of Obika/Carroll/Kane (when he's back from loan)?

The thing that most hurts about this anti-climatic day (not even any exciting rumours!) isn't Levy pressing snooze too many times to get up at 2230 and go to work as normal, it's that the person who usurps him with getting the just after 11 signing is none other than Arsene bleeding Wenger! Although they have said it's subject to formal registration being completed, it'd be funny if it didn't happen...

I miss 'Arry. So far this D-Day's been proper dull for Spurs - the most exciting story so far is we've sent Adam Smith on loan to Millwall. Come on football, where are the outrageous rumours which it turns out actually have a tiny slither of truth?? I've come to rely on you...

Although I must admit, I'm feeling thoroughly underwhelmed by in. SSN were at our training ground and said something about someone having a medical, but my signal cut out when they said who - I couldn't even say for sure if they were coming in or going out, it might have been Bentley to QPR. They then went on to talk about strikers, so didn't sound like it was one of them coming in.

Anyone heard any juicy rumours? Clearest I've got is...

Ooh, SSN just said Andros Townsend arrived at QPR's medical place to find the deal was off! And him, Bents, & JJ were all maybes earlier but they're all currently off - note the currently. Sounds like there are a few offers in for him, I hope only for loan deals, he was one of our key faces for the future a while back.

Also, our academy's apparently meant to be stuffed full of youngsters ready to start bedding into the first tam, which perhaps explains cutting the older players; imagine being mentored by the likes of Gallas, Bale or Parker!

Sorry for tangent (again), but our team tonight is: Lloris, Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekotto, Dembele, Parker, Lennon, Bale, Dempsey & Defoe

Would you say that's our first 11? I think I would. The question mark for me is over that link-up players - I.e. I'd say they're all first choice except maybe Dempsey, which is the sort of position that Holtby's likely to be filling isn't it? Interesting...
